Developing Your Argument

Exploring Your Subject.

The new Arizona Immigration law is a horrible law that can and will more than likely be used for making

racism legal. It also goes against our constitutional rights, and I believe will not solve the problem of

illgal immigrants coming here to the U.S.

The original Karate Kid is a about a new boy that is getting bullied, and the handyman at his apartment

complex who is a martial arts master. This man agrees to teach him and to show him that there is more

to the martial art than fighting. It’s rated PG.

Analyzing Your Readers.

Some of my readers may be familiar with the new Arizona Immigration law, but not know actually what

it is. I will have to provide some background on this law. What is this law’s purpose? Why is this law

horrible? How does it go against our our constitutional rights?

Most of my readers will be familiar with the new Karate Kid premise, but probably haven’t watched the

original Karate Kid. I will have to explain the movie’s theme and plot. What makes it a good movie? Why

do they keep remaking this movie?

Considering Your Judgment.

Pro Con

You see the underdog win Predictable plot

How the relationship between

the old man and the young boy grow

even though they are from

two very different cultures

and ages.

Testing Your Choice.

I am very familiar with my subjects and will be able to make a convincing evaluative argument. Plus I

think I have enough things to say about both of these subjects for 5 pages and I feel confident that I can

support my evaluation.

Listing Reasons.

*This is an issue what should be talked about.*It is interesting to see how Arizona is trying to fix their problem.*It goes against our constitutional rights.*Other states want to make make this a law in their states.

*It’s a fairly clean movie, which is rare nowdays.*It has a happy ending.*The theme of the movie is good for teenagers; lessons in trust, persistence, and that there is more than fighting to solve an answer.*Very entertaining, and you get sucked into it.

Finding Support for Your Reasons The support for my reasons about The Karate Kid will be derived mainly from my own personal experience, whereas the support for reasons with the new Arizona immigration law will be derived from the research I will need to do about it as well as my own personal thoughts about it.

Considering Your Purpose • I want my readers to consider renting the movie.• I can make the movie appealing to their desire for a fun, upbeat movie that has a good moral.

Interesting them in the new Arizona immigration law will probably be more difficult, particularly if they haven’t heard about it. I will need to tell a compelling anecdote about the racism againt immigrants to draw my readers' interest and attention.

• While I think every reader will have his/her own standards for evaluating a movie, I will mention the criteria by which I am evaluating the movie for clarity's sake.

• I can offer a balanced evaluation by sharing criticism of either the movie or the new Arixona immigration law and then refuting that criticism my reinforcing my thesis (a positive one).

Formulating a Working Thesis

The Karate Kid is an entertaining, well-made movie. This movie is clean, it has funny parts, has the underdog win, and a great moral.

The new Arizona immigration law has been a very controversial issue since Arizona has made it a law. It goes against our constitutional rights and more states want to make this law in their state. This law was supposed to help Arizona with their illegal immigrants, but has become more of an issue than a solution.
