Chapter 2 – Week 2

My experience when doing the presentation:

I struggled when presenting as I said many words wrong and got a company’s name wrong.

The way our presentation was laid out meant I had to say all my 9 slides all in one chunk. That was quite a struggle as there was no breaks and very little time to prepare for my next slide.

However, I did enjoy listening to my teammates’ research on their topics. I found it very interesting.

I enjoyed learning about Sony and how PlayStation came to be what it is today.

We missed the design element of Sony/PlayStation when doing our presentation. We ended up having a discussion on the design and aesthetics of the companies consoles. It was interesting to learn that the majority of Sony products are black and usually a quad shape.

We also missed coverage on the company’s ethos/ philosophy. We discussed it and came to the conclusion that their goal was to dominate the living room and to be known in all aspects of entertainment.

Industrial DesignQuestions I will be covering:Why do you think these are good examples of industrial design? Why are they iconic?Describe the designWhat do you like about them?Who is their audience? And how is that reflected in the aesthetics? How do the two compare with each other? How do these connect to the company’s philosophy?

Alessi Juicy Salif

Description:Designed by Phillipe Starck in 1990, the Juicy Salif is rightly counted amongst the icons of industrial design and has been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The citrus squeezer is cast in aluminium which is then polished, the design based on the shape of a squid and according to an account from the founder of Alessi was originally sketched out by Starck on a napkin while eating squid with lemon squeezed over it. It's a perfect example of how the most abstract associations can inspire iconic design.

This design was very eye catching. The juicer looks like it’s very well crafted and durable. The design itself is

Page 6: caseycoopergamesdevelopment.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewLoading your Portfolio 23 Table of Figures. Figure 1 Please add a picture of your choice, make this your own personal

very sleek, it’s retro yet futuristic. Anyone could have this in their kitchen and it would look like an expensive piece of art as opposed to a juicer. However, the design is also very practical. All edges point downward and brought to a point to make the most of gravity. Also, the ‘knees’ of the legs go upward so the juice is 100% directed downwards. This particular product was brought to life in the 1990s. Juicers around this time, such as the Singer Juice Giant. This is a huge comparison to show the products of the market at the time. The Singer is majoritively plastic and chunky by design. It’s also electric so i can imagine multiple issues when it comes to long term use. On the other hand, the Alessi is made of aluminium, durable and compact.

I like the Alessi Juicy Salif because it reminds me of retro alien movie posters.
