Case group work daily recording Case number: 5

    Date: 02.07.2010

    Group Session in the MORNING

Tuesday 2nd of June, room 22 Dipoli, Case 5

    present:

    Tuija

    AnneJuhoTerttuTimoEhsanAnna (Recorder)AgathaJia

The group should contribute fast models about the case -> we should look the casein the perspective of the history and the future

What is actually the task of the day? Hank comes to assist the group with thequestion of the day

The conversation drifts of to other matters such as football and cultural differencesand different societies

The ACSI end on Monday but we should come up with something that will last afterthe group departs

We should introduce new, strong ideas to Laurea University about the ALV case. Wehave come up with the content to the case but we should road map the way howthe content becomes reality. We should present ideas to Laurea about the case ->how to take the project further?

The case cannot die when people working with it get tired about it or move onbecause the case will be integrated to society and administration (Laurea)

How to generate something that there is something inside the ALV that keepsrenewing the case, we should introduce ideas that make the case self-sustaining

  • 8/9/2019 Case5_020710_dailynotes

    2/12

    Metaphors for the case:

One way to connect the case, society and administration is the curriculum ofLaureas students (they will contribute to the case through their studies) and realcompanies. The case has to also be open to the people so that it will be self-

sustaining -> should ALV be a FAB-LAB (concept from MIT) -> open environmentwhere anyone can come and contribute -> there are a lot of FAB-LABs in Europe,we dont want to make another FAB-LAB but we want to make something similarthat is related to health care and designing a new lifestyle for people involved inthe environment

We should invite other people to contribute to the project virtually; we should beclosely connected to the world. The environment is also physically existing and alsoa spiritual environment -> BA

MIX by Gary Hammel (Future management hub)

Open Innovation -> user driven innovation (e.g. Linux) We can have them both

health care innovations should be produced in an open innovationenvironment

    Life-long LIVING!

How will we take the case to the future? What is the next step? ->

We should help people to design their own (healthy) lifestyle

INPUTS: People (citizens, professionals, people bring innovations & ideas)

ALV (showroom & Living Lab, these are partly overlapping, e.g. Caring TV) ALVrequires: investments, open innovation, networks (national&international),dynamic

OUTPUTS: Innovations that can be commercialized and; student who has startedentrepreneurship in wellbeing)

ALV is a front leap to the future!

Citizens have short term visions and needs, investors long term -> How to weattract both of them to come in to the ALV?

  • 8/9/2019 Case5_020710_dailynotes

    3/12

The concept of ALV should utilize the groups of people between the ages of 2-10and 65+ -> These groups should help the people between the ages 35-55 becausethese people are in a stressful phase of life (family, career, not enough time, money issues e.g housing loans) and are maybe not that productive and change thecreativity curve

We should get these two age groups (kids & elderly) together because ofseveral reasons: both age groups have a lot to give each other and they alsoget a lot of out from these sessions with each other -> active community ->attracting other stakeholders for example companies -> what kind of ethicalproblems will this arouse? We have to be explicit to everybody what we aredoing!

Why should a basic citizen come to ALV? ALV can provide the citizens help indesigning a healthy lifestyle and maintaining it. All the stakeholders (e.g.companies, students, researchers) help in designing the lifestyle. Everything shouldbe in one place -> if some functions do not work we will try other functions

    Break for presentation and lunch

Jia is presenting the ideas the group generated in the morning session to ActiveLife Village representative -> ALV is a real village

    Group Session after LUNCH

    Suggestion on how to proceed

  • 8/9/2019 Case5_020710_dailynotes

    4/12

Jia presents her idea on how the team could proceed in the group work: talkingabout different stakeholders missions and what they need to work towards themissions could be the starting point for our case work from now on.

Info about the discussion in the morning:

Group was heavily encouraged to step one step forward, working towards macrolevel and future, not going that much into detail.

Creativity curve see flip chart: kids and elderly people are very creative, peoplearound 35-55 years are the less creative.

How could one facilitate the change in this curve? If we bring together thecreativity of young and elderly we can support the middle aged in their lack ofcreativity. If we can change the curve of creativity this could also transform the

    future of companies and society.

Further d iscussion on what to do now/ brainstorming:

At ALV, we should be able to create win-win situation between stakeholders, forinstance between students and companies. Companies could benefit from thecreativity of students who are cheap labour force, and students on the other handcould learn at site.

We at ALV have to go outside and to lure companies and organisations. A problemnowadays is that companies do not have time to organise or forget about the offersto use students. We might have to develop a model which eases these kinds ofprocesses. Active Life Village has some kind of model already (including LbD model, etc) but it does not seem to work well, the companies do not call (given reasonfrom companies: lack of time). We need to find a way to really attract thecompanies.

The group shows those who were not present the video of yesterdays presentation(colour chair in cafeteria conversation).

Since Ehsan is attending a back-office meeting at the moment, he cannot confrontthe group with his ideas on the case. Anne suggests a path on how to continue:discussing the chair idea in relation to micro to supra level!

More information for those who were not present in the morning:

ACSI camp is about creating self renewal systems which lead to innovation processon a societal level.

  • 8/9/2019 Case5_020710_dailynotes

    5/12

Micro level: is the driving force empowering the whole renewal. The self-organising change process from this level leads to similar changes onthe other levels.

Meso: e.g. Laurea, companies, city of Espoo/ organisational innovation, processinnovation

Macro: e.g. Finnish society, government/ social innovationSupra: e.g. Global level

Levels influence each others, reciprocal. The Mirco level could influence the otherlevels by the usage of for instance ovi.com, through exporting concepts andknowledge from micro to supra level or through exporting health services andproducts from micro to supra level.

Our work is also about life style design.

Our case task is not only about a physical building, this is more about the people

working in the building, the approach of how they work together and how theycause changes on other levels, too.

We do not define innovation as a product, but as a process and social or societalinnovation.

We have to create a joyful and sensational environment which invites andempowers people to be creative, which generates flow. On this platform everybodyis an expert. On the platform all experts communicate. On the platform we havechallenges to work on product, service, administrative, political, companies

innovations. Platform will be multi-stakeholder environment for differentinnovations with different timelines.

The better the things happen on micro level, the better the development whichfollows on other levels.

So: we have to create a platform where people work opposite to what we havebeen taught in the past decades (where people and expertise was divided andseparated), now we bring people and expertise back together and empower themto experience the sensation of flow and to develop innovations which affect alllevels from micro to supra.

Our case group itself had to discuss this view on innovation and to process towardsthis new understanding of development before being able to design such an ALVplatform.

Ehsan back, takes over group lead:

Ehsan gives in on ACSIBITION: each group will get 500 Euro to prepare the owncase exhibition.

    Agenda for now onwards:

  • 8/9/2019 Case5_020710_dailynotes

    6/12

    - 1. presentation of Ehsans proposition for the ALV platform- 2. group discussion on the presentation- 3. integration of all knowledge the group has in one framework and come

up with a concept of the platform (inputs, outputs, stakeholders, tools, ..)

    1. presentation:

Reading through THE INITIATION PROPOSITION (below some additional info which isnot given in the text):

3.2.3. term government organizations needs to be replaced by publicsector.

3.2.4. CaringTV studio should not remain physically upstairs in corner, butshould be more easily accessible

Gym: also for alternative health care and therapy methods, e.g.encountering arts

    2. discussion:

    Feedback from group:

Showroom, Overlap and living Lab: showroom is something like facebook but live(for instance: innovation monitor like facebook feeds). Living lab itself is likeGoogle headquarters, it s not like sitting behind a desk but doing also fun stuff.

Idea: to make facebook physical and to use example of google headquarters forinspiration.

The platform has to be partially physical and digital. People who are not present atthe building should be able to digitally participate.

Lowering threshold for companies: resource booking system. Having a facilitator inALV who arranges meeting with interested companies to come to ALV to arrangemeetings.

Group 6 asks for collaboration to meet group 5 for presenting each others

    the ideas at 16:30.

It is time for a 15 min break. During the coffee break group members shallwrite down feedback on the presentation.Group is divided into two groups, those who work rather on (A) tangible andthose who want to work on (B) the macro level.

    B) Macro level/ Conceptual level group discussion:

There is the idea on the overlapping area, about the caf: could it be a social caffor also other people than the working staff. The caf could compete with Amica,

  • 8/9/2019 Case5_020710_dailynotes

    7/12

it would have the best coffee and cakes, so that people would be attracted bythat.

Ehsan had a similar idea on the library: people would want to read magazines andbooks specifically in the ALV library.

About the caf: Ehsan thought about working with AMICA, not to threaten them.Carmen remembers from ESPOON KESKUS institute that there was a caf of peoplewith disabilities who learned and baked own cakes for students and teachers. Thisidea could be copied and adjusted to our idea.

Let s now talk about Macro level:

Art and Culture should be introduced in ALV. Movies, concerts. Idea: movie theatreinside the ALV which shows e.g. concerts, operas from all over the world andpeople can watch.

T3 project (tiede, taide ja tekniikka) in Espoo (Tapiola, Otaniemi, Keilaniemi).

3.2.3 replace citizens by social (OK) and academia and education (this idearejected)

Coffee place in ALV also open for people of government staff, so that governmentstaff can be in touch with citizens. Also when different parties want to get closerto the citizens, they can use this. In that way micro and macro level interact.

Elderly people could counsel young people, for instance students. How could thisidea could be transferred to the macro level? Some kind of panel system?!?

The ALV could be used as platform where to watch panels of decision makers, afterwhich citizens could give feedback to decision makers. Some kinds of social mediacould be used to react upon the panel info. Micro and Macro level in interaction. Also politicians might have panel discussions which are shown to citizens at home, and citizens would comment back. Hence the micro would influence the macrolevel.

Another possibility: in ALV citizens together with students generate new proposals,

which will be communicated to decision makers.

Figure 5: The individual as such and his/her life style has to be added.

3.1.2 Otaniemi is not simple an industrial and commercial area, it is (also) aresearch and education system.

Figure 5: public and private sector are not completely separated, but overlap.Figure needs to be changed. Change private into public private (?).

3.2.1 Multicultural aspect is important. Multicultural approach can be connected tothe supra level. E.g. cooperation Japan Finland.

Figure 6: ALV 100% owned by Laurea. ALV company is owned 40% 40% 20%.

  • 8/9/2019 Case5_020710_dailynotes

    8/12

What values? Maybe: ease of accessibility, no special knowledge necessary forparticipating. These still need to be worked out.

Differentiation: inter-cultural is not a good term because it is digital connection

which differentiates the ALV from other similar platforms.

3.2.1 What methodscould we offer? Method refers to the process one has to gothrough to deal with a challenge. Methods are not worked out yet, but they have tobe made transparent. How could that be made transparent?

    Some collected questions:

Are the spaces designed so that they enhance the quality for communication? Is iteasy to work in groups? To connect people?

Are the spaces designed so that they enhance boundary crossing? For instancebetween teachers and students? Ehsan has thought about expertise walls.

Do people need coaching for using the platform, for using the different areas? What about mentoring?

Who is responsible for the processes? As here for instance the ACSI people have amethod in mind and guide the participants and case groups. Ehsan plans that at theend of his studies he has a business model in mind including an implementationplan which indicates also who has to monitor the processes in the ALV. The

curriculum of students could entail that students have to train how to facilitate theplatform (if it would be useful for the students too). Especially business students inOtaniemi could engage in this. This process could be also given to the citizens.Citizens could in the long run facilitate the platform. Students could be monitoredand guided by them so that they for short periods facilitate the platform withsupport of the elderly. It would also be important to store the knowledge whichwas gained or applied before in the platform: some kind of a knowledge bag, whichcould be stored/ taken care of by library. Now there is already something alikealready called Optima but it s only for students now (incremental thinking now).

    Showroom plays an important role:

Some kind of second knowledge keeper (library = first knowledge keeper).Showroom would turn knowledge into explicit data. Knowledge in showroom iscurrent, on air/ live.

Ehsan would like to finish the co-reflection later on, in case the other group doesnot bring this feedback.

    Discussion on Group A:

50 credit idea could be used for one study theme in the curriculum of students.

    Having fun at the ALV.

    9/12

    Discussion on Group B:

Imagine if we now talk about digital, in future it will be 3D. All panels will be 3D.

We should also consider the technologies which will be used in 2 or 3 years.

    Meeting with group 6

    Case group 6 present s:

Headline: Stop human waste how can we build a truly creative society.

First: we need to co-operate a service structure in the society.Second: planning of payment structures.Third: Infrastructure (?)

Public Private People Partnerhsips (PPPP) instead of Public Private Partnership(PPP).

Example of loppukiri: organisation in HKI designed, started and used by elderlypeople.

The political case: Koskela in triangle of new partnerships, novel ways toparticipate and social costs. (see group 6 flip chart)

Main problem is: knowledge and expertise is available but are minds already set insuch way, that people want to go that way?

    Discussion:

    - Stop human waste means stop wasting humans.

    - It seems that group 5 and 6 have some similar ideas, and it would bebeneficial to join our forces. Why not then later on also collaborate withgroup 3. 5 and 6 for sure seem to think about similar issues. Group 5could need advice when trying to think less on grass root but more on theconceptual and macro level. Suggestion whether two or three membersof each group could sit down together and discuss.

    - Group 5 can learn from 6 that they have a strong business model. Butgroup 6 presents it in such way that it doesnt seem to be specific forelderly people, it seems that your presentation focuses on all kinds ofpeople.

    - Group 6 says, we consider elderly people as special people and we wantto think in an inclusive way.

  • 8/9/2019 Case5_020710_dailynotes

    10/12

    - Criticism of group 5: elderly are different, for instance physically less fitbut wiser. You miss that in your point. That should be included more inthe presentation.

    - Group 6: But there is a saying if a house is good for people withdisabilities it is good for all. That is also our starting point. If it is good

for elderly it is good for all. It would be nice to live in an environment inwhich all types of people are living. Group 6 has been fighting withhidden assumptions on elderly.

    Presentation of Group 5:

    Tuijas part:

    Creativity Curve.

ALV integrates the most creative groups of society and tries to change the curve ofsociety in society.

Benefit for students is that they have an interesting learning environment. Theywill have learning assignments to engage in the ALV actively.

Benefits also for children who miss grand parents and at the ALV cab be withelderly people.

Micro Meso Macro Supra level system.

Tuija was fund of group 6 idea, because with their help we might be able to thinkmore on the conceptual level.

Example: we can operate also as testing lab, at us one can develop services andtest service ideas for the macro level, health care.Or other example: politicians panels can be watched by elderly at the ALV and theelderly then give feedback via social media.

    All levels are interconnected.

    Ehsans part:

Explains some parts of his proposition paper.

We do not want to copy other labs we want to be different.

    Hakkis part:

There is showroom, overlap and living lab.

In the showroom there is an expert board: networking idea. (see group work A)

Joint presentation of Ehsan, Tuija and Hakki:

  • 8/9/2019 Case5_020710_dailynotes

    11/12

The facility shall not only look physical but there shall also be digital space.

Example: active life credits. Or: ALV facilitator who can be called by a company inneed of some testing. Facilitator then arranges space and people to do that.

    Discussion:

    - Usually in social and health care services there is a lab where youdevelop and then you bring the developed service to the people. That iswhy the ALV can be very powerful because this traditional path of testingand then bringing to the real people can be changed.

    - Why credits? Why do we think of creating alternative currencies? Why notjust use money?

    - Answer: this might be the Finnish way of thinking (..)- There is a delicate balance between frameworks and freedom. A person

could gain freedom from engaging in such an ALV system by gaining realmoney which can be used in other places too.

    - Should we consider people wanting to help because they get somethingout of it? Questioning the mindset: are we talking about helping or aboutgetting something?

    - Group 5: when thinking about the ALV we think about both, giving andtaking. But good question, do we really need credits?!?

    - James: credits are not an alternative to money. People have become

scared of money and how to use it. James works with in UK are scared ofmoney issues. People begin to question the value set which is existingnow. How to re-enfranchise people? Money is not fine for peopleanymore. They want to have another currency (?)

    - Social capital works by itself. You need to emphasise the value in thethings and ideas themselves.

    - What about the societal value? What is the societal innovation in group5s case? It should probably be extracted and presented. Where is thesocietal innovation value?

    - Group 5 talks about the owner of the case as they. Group 6 tries to

refer to we/ We can instead of they can.

    - What is societal innovation? It must be something about creatingbetter behaviour in society. We would need a tipping point for that.Take what is already there: social and capital resources and combinethem.

    - The state of creativity is also the state of happiness. If at the ALV we canenable the sensation of flow which is related to creativity this would begood for society. Creativity is connected to happiness and this isconnected to good life and good life to healthy lifestyles. And if I canindependently live healthily and happily my life this will lower the statescost.

  • 8/9/2019 Case5_020710_dailynotes

    12/12

    - Group 5 answers to previous question about societal innovation incase 5: at ALV on the micro level we are generating a movement withwhich we try to affect the other levels. This is our societal innovation.Group 6 agrees.

    - If we could involve YLE in the ALV, this could be beneficial. See exampleof HIV campaign, there was info on HIV in soap operas by addressing theemotional level of people.

    - Massmedia as tool for changing society.

    - Apart from social operation, financial and other capital, group 6 shouldalso look at cultural capital. Group 6 should also think of culturalattractiveness.

    - Lot of values should be added to the society. E.g. happiness, ability tosmile, and so on. Measuring happiness should be invented. We need

matrix in order to measure the change in happiness.

    - Question for group 6: how should we work on the business model of thisplatform?

    - Groups 5 and 6 can discuss on Saturday on the boat.

    - Example of contraception board game from Sulford (?). It helped toreduce pregnancy. This game is a practical manifestation. We groupshave to figure something out to bring our ideas alive, to manifest ourideas. We need to develop business models, to go out and sell our ideas.

Both groups have theories and sophisticated concepts, are pretty close tothe solution, but we have to now manifest the ideas. Suggestion: inrelaxed manner do that tomorrow on the boat.
