Description of the group working element:

Reframing the case again shuffling the subcases and forming new groups for them. Brainstorming

together and then structuring the ideas in subcase groups. Agreeing on the new subcases and

brainstorming on post-its dividing the ideas into categories of new subcases.

    Outcomes of the working element:

OVERARCHING THEME: Social integration, anchoring (Strategic design of communities)

SUBCASE 1: the Port, Kantasatama (building up in 20 years)

THREADS UNDER SUBCASES: How to do it exactly? + references from elsewhere

Description of the group working element:

EXPLAINING THE WORK IN ONE SENTENCE (what really is the concept) to our observer. Writing

down the most important KEY WORD (one word to explain our case) of our work.

    Outcomes of the working element:

Integration of community through services and infrastrucure as well.

We are developing a way to intgrate kotkalainens to the development of their city (currently

Kantasatama) by anchoring and specifying some cases of it in Kantasatama and on the axes (ACSIs)

    leading to it.

    Lead to Kantas????

Building a strong, united community that is anchored to traditions and long term needs andrequirements of current and future kotkalaisuus

3D- ACSI (axis) vision to connect the citizens (mixed cultures) with the assets that already exist in

Description of the group working element:

Markku drew a concept diagram of our work while explaining how he had understood our ideas.

    Outcomes of the working element:

ANCHORING (CITIZENS TO CHANGE/VISION/THE CITY/EACH OTHER)

    - NETS & KNOTS (mental and physical, but with location, authenticity needed)

    - ACSES (more knots, physical and mental)

    - STORIES (identity, sharing, multicultural, multigenerational, working towards pride and away from

    fear)

    - WORK & MEANING (including people: immigrants and locals)

CITIZENS TO: CHANGE + VISION + GROUNDS + EACH OTHER = THE COMMUNITY

    IDEAS FROM EVERYONE:

    - Multicultural centre to Kantasatama, maybe to Anchor building! Competition of immigrant

    enterpreneurs

    - How do things connect to the Port area? IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE!

    - How to build more knots to the ACSIs (axis)

    - The observer asked us what are the real acts that need to be done? How to get people more

    engaged?

    - Find the richness in the idea

    - PEOPLE TO BE PART OF THE FUTURE

    - Rendering is meaningless

    -Annes flavor of food

To make the area usable for as many ppl as possible for as low cost as possible

    + identity and anchoring!!

Description of the group working element:

The observer asks us to still go more in detail in our overarching theme instead of starting to work

on the subcases. So we go out in two groups and find new strategies to look at the overarching

    theme, anchoring.

    Outcomes of the working element:

    - Hilla and Tommi take the approach of identifying with Kotka stakeholders and residents. After

trying out roles of a youg family, seniors, investors, unemployed workers and immigrants, they come

up with a social enterprise idea: a kind of day labor center where youngsters looking for their first

job and unemployed people can find simple tasks to help seniors and others in need. This becomes

rather a new thread than an overarching idea for the project.

    - David and Inka talk about the spirit of Kotka and the meaning of BELONGING to the city. The ideas

of how to take history and make it part of our modern society.

We try to formulate that to a new overarching theme all together but get in trouble.

Description of the group working element:

Our observer Krista asks us to sit in a circle and discuss what happened, ideas and thought that were

brought up, during our walks. She also wanted us to explain and analyse the way our group was

    working

Outcomes of the working element:- the group had different opinions about group memebrs, mainly focusing on whether all members

were treated equally and whether all group members were active enough in the group work (not

    working individually)

    - the observed questioned whether we were going around in circles, working hard, but what new

    things came out of it

Description of the group working element:

The ACSI method of working. Anne presents us her work on the Foreign Flavor case.

    Outcomes of the working element:

    - We agree that the paper Anne has written is a good piece of work

    - The other ideas could be presented in a think tank a big barrel full of post-it sized notes that

people can add to in the ACSibition or either take them with them

    4/5

    - Inka and Hilla decide to work on visualizing the Flavor of Food case in Kantasatama, anchoring it to

    the harbor

    - Tommi decides to collect the ideas for the think tank form all post-its created earlier during the

    day

    - David and Markku develop the possible overarching theme of citizenship (the observers Krista andRaphaele join the discussion). It turns into a concept that Markku is really happy of: Kotka should

become a leading example of a city, where citizens are involved in continuous innovation. We work

the last moments to visualize that more in our minds, and it turns into a Kotkalainens family tree.

Hilla promises to make a family tree/citizen map in visual form for Sunday.

    Some general thoughts:

    - About the concept of meaning : you can not do something to make it mean, you have tochoose.

    - Find every positive initiative to life! Special abilities, magnets to draw people; somethingthat can be marketed!

    - Belonging. Kotka should specialice in societal innovations! Kotka could be thought of as athink tank a start up example for other cities.

OVERVIEW OF THE DISCUSSION WITH MARKKU

The ASCI project is about Societal Innovation.....

In the short term the future of the community of Kotka is uncertain.

The redevelopment of the Kotka harbour area over the next twenty years is viewed as an

opportunity for the city to progress, economically and culturally. The redevelopment of

Kantasatama is a unique opportunity to address the potential issues of worklessness; an ageing

population; fear of economic decline;multi-cultural relationships; and a lack of future opportunity

    for the youth of Kotka.

This uncertain future is not new to the City and in the History it is described a series of set backs,

challenges, and disruption, each one however led to progression. The Historian described the four

innovations which Kotka has achieved. This history demonstrates the proud heritage of our city, the

industrie, the resilience of the people people, and the ability to continue in the face of adversity.

The main suggestion (so far) is that we the Kotka strive to become an outstanding example of how

communities and government can work together to overcome the problems in society encountered

in the major cities of Scandinavia and Europe.

The idea is that the people of Kotka -- once again -- build a resilient society that adapts in advance of

the inevitable changes that will face the city and the region, Finland, Scandinavia, and Europe,

and, in-doing so, will act as a guiding lighthouse. Kotka will once again embrace its traditional links

which span the citiess of Europe, and the World .

Three most important issues or ideas from the day as agreed by group

members at the end of the day:1. ANCHORING

    2. KANTASATAMA AS A KNOT ON DIFFERENT LEVELS

    3. WORK AND MEANING
