Our mission at the Weatherhead School of Management is to

prepare students for today’s complex and changing world.

As a result, we have rethought management education by

focusing on the distinctive themes of Sustainable Enterprise

and Manage by Designing, both of which are interlaced

throughout Weatherhead’s renowned programs.

Page 9: CASE Weatherhead Brochure 2009
Page 10: CASE Weatherhead Brochure 2009

Sustainable Enterprise is built on the concept that every pressing issue of our time is an opportunity for a business to create human and environmental benefit, while also being profitable. A business becomes sustainable if it adopts renewable resource practices and holds itself accountable for the impact of its activities. Weatherhead has embedded this overarching theme into its curriculum. Ongoing research includes Appreciative Inquiry, theory mapping, and whole-system design.

Under the umbrella of Sustainable Enterprise, Sustainable Business and Social Entrepreneurship are emerging as the most important business opportunities of the 21st century. Sustainable Business involves capturing new opportunities to integrate world betterment into industry supply chains and effective business strategy development. Social Entrepreneurship seeks to improve societal conditions by solving problems through entrepreneurship and other business models. While corporations surge ahead with plans to become more socially conscious, Weatherhead is at the forefront of teaching methods for achieving measurable results that positively affect our society, the environment, and a company’s bottom line.

Weatherhead continues to help organizations implement long-term strategy change and work toward achieving a sustainable earth. Through this approach, Weatherhead has helped put more than 20 large businesses on the sustainability map while providing better living conditions for workers and suppliers. In addition, our students are involved in outstanding pursuits including researching turning harmful byproducts – such as the waste from processing cassava; the origin of tapioca and a major source of carbohydrates – into a sustainable source of energy.

Weatherhead is spearheading the concept Manage by Designing—the integration of design thinking, skills, and experiences—into its MBA curriculum. Our students learn to sketch new alternatives, see through problem situations, overcome traditional boundaries, and prototype ideas.

Design skills and methods enable managers to respond to complex situations creatively, holistically, and productively. Weatherhead graduates approach problems with the belief that they can do better than what has been done before. We teach that “best practices” are not good enough, and that it is possible to improve on familiar solutions in surprising and valuable ways. Our graduates blend critical and creative skills. They are able to recognize and avoid default solutions, and replace the trap of “either...or” thinking with the possibility of “both...and” thinking. It is this unique design attitude that distinguishes Weatherhead graduates, enabling them to create value.

Weatherhead is in the heart of Cleveland’s art and cultural district, a collaborative environment for design learning. Within one square mile, you can interact with colleagues at the Cleveland Institute of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and Case Western Reserve University’s schools and colleges. These world-class assets have helped influence the decision to implement Manage by Designing into Weatherhead’s culture, curricula, and research. We bring drawing instructors, theatrical directors, and others with skills in the art and design disciplines into our classrooms to offer distinct perspectives that can be applied to business life.

Our faculty members are not only leaders in the classroom, they are also leading cutting-edge research. OperationsWeatherhead’s Department of Operations has a long and rich history as a center of education and scholarship–it was here that the world’s first doctorate in Operations Research was granted.

The goal of the Department is to teach the unique combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer-modeling to assist in decision-making for complex organizational problems. The Department focuses specifically on Supply Chain Management and the interface of Operations and Finance, but also has several clusters of interest that include mathematical programming, stochastic

optimization, computational finance, and scheduling.

Our hallmark programs–the MS-Operations Research and the MS-Supply Chain Management– attract a diverse group of students from around the globe. Our close-knit community of 500 students enables small classes, ranging in size from fifteen to forty-five, that are taught and mentored by internationally distinguished faculty and industry leaders. Exceptional analytical skills and the ability to communicate ideas effectively set our students apart.

Outstanding career opportunities and global learning are also hallmarks of the undergraduate experience at Weatherhead. Recent interns and graduates have obtained positions with Accenture, American Greetings, GE, IBM, Intel, Merrill Lynch, Sherwin Williams, Big Four accounting firms, and other Fortune 500 companies. Our many study abroad options range from year-long and semester programs from Singapore to Spain—and points in between—to intensive short programs such as our two-week International Management Institute in Frankfurt, Germany.

Weatherhead undergraduates will start out ahead in the job race. The University’s affiliations with hundreds of companies, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies in Cleveland and around the world make it easy to gain work experience. Summer internships and semester-long co-op opportunities abound, and our Action Learning course for seniors provides another distinctive experience. This course is a semester-long management consulting assignment that features an intense “consulting boot camp” during the first week. This is followed by ongoing research, analysis, and regular meetings with local clients (large and small companies, as well as nonprofits). End products of Action Learning engagements may take many forms, such as a customized marketing plan or a set of strategic recommendations having lasting impact for client organizations.

MBAThe Weatherhead School has a long history of innovation in the design of our full-time MBA program. We bring to you our most ambitious redesign yet. If we had to capture it in one word, it would have to be “Transform.” Our objective in the redesign is to create an experience that is transformational to the candidate going through it, and to help our graduates transform the organizations that they will work in and with.

We start with the premise that rigorous, analytical and integrative thinking is a critical foundation for your learning here, and for continued effectiveness in later years. The first year of our program aims to do just that. All the basic areas of management are taught to be rigorous and relevant with an eye toward how all the pieces fit together in the broader organizational context. In addition, we have retained our widely heralded, and much copied Management Assessment and Development sequence. We have also added an Executive Dialogues Seminar Series. This series brings senior executives into the first-year classrooms to present and discuss particularly challenging issues that they currently face. In reviewing the first-year curriculum, one of our faculty members mused that it was not a program for the faint of heart. We wholeheartedly agree.

The second year provides opportunity for more in-depth work in an area(s) of the student’s choosing. We have coupled this opportunity for specialization with unique, year-long courses that speak to special strength of the Weatherhead School and faculty. The courses currently offered in this year-long format include Manage by Designing, Social Entrepreneurship and Business Sustainability, Commercialization of Intellectual Property Assets, and Business Planning. These year-long courses afford the flexibility to bring multiple faculty into the classroom and the opportunity to work on live projects over the course of the entire second year.

We are excited about our re-designed program and welcome your interest and participation in the transformation.

Part-Time Evening and Saturday MBA Weatherhead’s part-time MBA program is ranked in the top 50 by BusinessWeek. In the evening program, classes meet once a week to accommodate the constraints of working individuals. The degree can be started in any semester depending on prior business education. In the Saturday program, technology-enhanced learning and workshops are combined with traditional classroom education. Classes meet every other Saturday enabling completion of the entire 48-credit/16-course curriculum within two years regardless of undergraduate coursework. Students in either program may also complete courses at a slower pace, as long as the MBA program requirements are met within six years of first enrollment.

Graduates will demonstrate enhanced critical thinking ability, leadership potential, and improved communication skills.

MAcc students have the advantage of diverse career paths in public accounting, financial management, consulting, and corporate accounting. Today, more than 300 Weatherhead MAcc alumni are employed in professional positions in 23 countries on five continents.

Master of Nonprofit OrganizationsThis unique and highly specialized degree for individuals interested in the business side of 501(c)(3) organizations is jointly offered by Weatherhead, the Case School of Law, and the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences.

In order to successfully address the wide range of issues confronting many of these groups, the program explores the following four thematic areas: nonprofit purposes, traditions, and contexts; analytical thinking for nonprofit leaders; generating and managing resources; and leading nonprofit organizations.

Master of Engineering and ManagementEngineering and business management do not happen independently in industry. The Master of Engineering and Management (MEM) degree is designed to teach graduate engineers critical skills needed to be successful in a leadership role in engineering. Weatherhead offers four doctoral degrees, including three Ph.D. programs and an Executive Doctor of Management. These programs are specialized for candidates seeking a career dedicated to research and teaching. Many of our degrees are the first of their kind. This pioneering mentality makes our doctoral programs highly competitive. Admission as a Ph.D. student guarantees direct collaboration with our dynamic faculty through advanced independent study courses and research projects.

Ph.D. in ManagementA Ph.D. in Management focuses on the role of corporate managers as creators of value in organizations and society. This involves topics including corporate development and diversification, general management behavior, mergers and acquisitions, comparative management and technology policies, strategic planning, and corporate entrepreneurship. Weatherhead offers the following tracks for specialization within the Ph.D in Management Program:

AccountancyA specialization in Accountancy is designed to prepare students for an academic career at a top university by focusing on the fundamentals of research theories and applications, foundation disciplines, and theories of knowledge. The goal of the program is to relate the research process and outcomes to business practice.

Information SystemsFor students who love ideas, enjoy debating, and consider themselves thought-leaders, a specialization in Information Systems may be an appropriate career path. Our doctoral program emphasizes the design and operation of information environments with the goal of learning how these systems may become humanly satisfying and socially beneficial.

Labor and Human Resource PolicyIn today’s economy, the demand to understand the processes of human resource development and outcomes for both organizations and employees is becoming increasingly important. A specialization in Labor and Human Resource Policy involves inquiry into the employment relationship and the effective use of human assets at the level of work groups, organizations, market, and societies. After completion, Ph.D.s will be prepared for scholarly careers in research and teaching at major academic and research institutions.

MarketingWeatherhead’s specialization in Marketing provides a basis in the fundamentals of research theories and applications. Topics cover a broad spectrum and include strategic planning, understanding buyer behavior, business-to-business marketing, planning and managing field sales efforts, concepts and strategies of developing new products, and principles of marketing across national and cultural boundaries.

Since 1964, 300 doctoral students have shaped the future of the field through research, scholarly writing and teaching, and professional leadership. Our mission is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to conduct the finest quality research and teaching, and become scholars at the highest level of specialization. Whether our graduates pursue academia or professional practice positions, a common denominator exists for those choosing this path: sharing a passion for generating new knowledge of consequence through inquiry, writing and research, and deeply reflective practice.

Executive Doctor of Management (EDM) Weatherhead’s EDM program is available to a select group of experienced executives who possess graduate degrees and are committed to pursuing formal, rigorous study as practitioner-scholars. An EDM degree integrates concept and practice within the context of today’s emerging global issues, enabling professionals to explore new horizons of executive management within their organizations and beyond.

Students have numerous opportunities to focus their learning experiences and design their dissertation topics. Participants direct their dissertation inquiries on an applied problem and seek to make policy and intellectual contributions to institutional problems in a global context.

The program is an interdisciplinary three-year pursuit delivered in intensive weekend residencies. For those who have achieved substantial leadership responsibilities in their careers, the EDM program will stimulate intellectual growth allowing a student to gain a doctoral degree while continuing full-time employment.
