CASE: NU

The International Projects Office (IPO) developed out the UW-Madison partnership with Nazarbayev University (NU), an English-medium university in Astana, Kazakhstan (est. 2010). UW-Madison was one of NU’s original group of strategic international higher education institutional partners.

In the exploratory phase and the first two agreements, UW faculty and staff consulted and contributed to the development of the academic curriculum for departments in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences helped build the foundation for academic advising developed the protocols for hiring international faculty, to name some areas of contribution.

NU’s Institutional MissionTo be a model for higher education reform and modern research in Kazakhstan and to contribute to the establishment of Astana as an international innovation and knowledge hub.

In the next three phases (Agreements 3 through 5), the focus shifted toward providing capacity building support for new and developing areas at NU. This included providing faculty mentoring (connecting senior UW faculty to junior faculty at NU SHSS) conducting program evaluations of the academic departments in SHSS doing a SWOT analysis for the School of Engineering regarding ABET accreditation facilitating trainings for various academic support units including the registrar, writing program, and career advising conducting needs assessments and strategic consultations in areas like the library, alumni relations, student services and mental health.

Additionally during this period, UW began to host NU students via the VISP program.

In the current agreements (Agreement 6-General, Agreement 6-SHSS, NURIS, VISP 2018), UW is providing consultation in emerging areas on the NU-side, e.g., the development of a WARF-like institution and programming, and ongoing capacity building in areas like academic advising and the writing program, which are undergoing changes, as well as in new areas like research administration.

The UW team is also working to facilitate more collaborative endeavors like supporting faculty research and student exchange.
