Case study on Farmers collective towards silt application
The 106 farmers are happy that each of their fertilizer cost for the next three
years Rs. 10,000/- will be reduced
In the olden days whenever these tanks were filled with silt then farmers used to collect and
transported to their agricultural fields to increase soil fertility of the land. Earlier they were used
bullock carts for transportation it is of very less cost. This application use to increase the fertility sandy lands. Since one decade due to unavailability of
bullock carts many farmers are not collecting soil from tank. Tractor hiring for this activity also expensive so farmers are going for it. Several
farmers are looking for the donors to help them to provide financial support for tank de-silting and for
silting applications in their lands.
Interventions by SuGWM/CROPS
In June 2011, around 106 farmers formed in group and elected one committee consisting 12 members for focus on concerns such as conserve ground water for drinking water and irrigation & sustainable agriculture practices
with facilitation of CROPS under SuGWM project. Farmers collectively felt that they should go for silting
application to their lands as it was not happening more than decade. The de-silting tank also will make space to
store more water which can recharge the wells in surround to tank. So the task of de-silting was finalized
to take up. Committee analyzed that de-siltation of the tank in
NREGS (National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme) will not support all farmers at a time and there is there is
no other scheme in Government which will entertain this activity. They calculate that it will cost around Rs.
225- will cost for de-silting and transporting one tractor load to their lands.
