By Sue Bancroft, Head of Policy and Employee Relations “As a business we knew we needed to respond to the introduction of the Levy, but as we were so early in the process our knowledge and understanding of how it all worked was limited. We approached Bis Henderson Academy to help us on our journey and we met with them a number of times so they could help us get to grips with how the Levy works and understand the switch from frameworks to the new standards. Bis Henderson then went to great length to understand our business and what our key objectives were so they could get a clear picture of our training goals. It was from here that we decided that for the first 12 months we wanted to use the credits to upskill our managers and Bis Henderson Academy helped us create our First Line Manager Leadership Programme which launched in October 2017. Having initially identified the skills gaps in our team internally, Bis Henderson then helped us in aligning those skills gap with the most relevant standards to sign up to so that we could meet the business goals we’d discussed. We were able to add specific elements to the programme to tailor it to our needs, and Bis Henderson even designed the programme around our 24/7 multi-site operation to ensure we wouldn’t be taking resource away for long periods of time. We needed a training partner who could accommodate our working arrangements and we were impressed with the flexibility Bis Henderson provided, their trainers worked out of normal hours and even conducted sessions using Skype to work around various shift patterns. Bis Henderson were on hand to support us in getting buy-in from our managers and also from our senior stakeholders – the knowledge and understanding they provided us with meant we could talk confidently around the benefits of the programme both for our staff and for our business. When we first launched the programme we were delighted with the response from our managers; we’d taken steps to ensure we communicated that the training was an amazing opportunity for managers to gain professionally recognised qualifications at no cost to themselves, so it generated great positivity in the team. the first instance, and we’ll shortly be rolling out to around 60 of our warehouse colleagues. The response we have had to our internal adverts for this programme has been tremendous and we are actually oversubscribed – which is a great place to be! Early feedback from the team has been extremely encouraging and we’ve even used the feedback to flex and adjust the programme to get it just right and stretch our employees so we can be sure the training is adding value and developing our people as much as possible.
