Overview

NCC (National Coagulation Centre), based at St James’ Hospital, Dublin, is world renowned for

its treatment of haemophilia.

Requirement

Patients with severe haemophilia need to self-

medicate at home. Since this is done without

supervision, it is fraught with multiple risks. These include knowing whether the medication:

▪ is correct

▪ is in date

▪ is on a recall list

NCC wanted to implement a system that would allow patients to use their smartphone to check

the safety of medication before use. It needed

to be easy to use and have the ability to track medication throughout the supply chain, from

manufacturer to the patient at home.

THE SOLUTION

01World’s first smartphone medication scanning app for patients with haemophilia

Crimson Tide has used its mpro5 enterprise mobility platform to develop a smartphone app (mpro5Hx), that enables patients with severe haemophilia to ensure that their medication is safe to use before self-infusion at home.

Cross platform app hosted in the cloud

mpro5Hx is available across all mobile platforms (iOS, Android and Windows 10) and is securely hosted in the cloud with

Microsoft Azure. Every patient is offered a compatible device to use the app as part of the wider solution for NCC.

Integration with Electronic Patient Record (EPR)

Data captured on mpro5Hx synchronises with patient’s ERP, ensuring that clinicians and patients have a comprehensive view of

the patient’s treatment history in real time. This in turn is leading to better care and management of the patient’s condition.

Integration with NCC’s stock management system

mpro5Hx also integrates with NCC’s stock management system, enabling the organisation to reduce costs through minimising potential medication wastage.

THE SOLUTIONWhen a patient needs to self-infuse, they log on to the mpro5Hx app by scanning their patient ID card with their smartphone. The ID card allows multiple users within a household to access their own account within the app on the same mobile device. This also keeps personal medical data safe and secure.

THE SOLUTIONThe patient then uses the barcode scanner, integrated within the app to scan the unique barcode on their medication package. All barcodes are global standard 2D (GS1) barcodes. 03

This process verifies that the medication:

▪ is in date

▪ matches the

patient’s prescription

▪ is not on a recall list

The patient can then be assured that the medication is safe for them to use.

THE SOLUTION

Building on this initial success, mpro5Hx now integrates with NCC’s stock management system. This integration has allowed additional features to be deployed on the app including:

1) Stock checking – patients can view the exact quantity of medication they are holding in their fridge stock within the app. This helps to prevent over ordering medication.

2) Alerts for the existence of shorter dated stock –should a patient attempt to use a medication vial that has a later expiry date than other medication batches in their fridge stock, the app will alert the patient to use the vial with the shortest expiry date. This also helps reduce stock wastage.

THE SOLUTION

After infusion, the app prompts the patient to enter details about their treatment. This includes recording bleed severity, bleed location and reason for infusion (e.g. prophylaxis, on-demand bleed).05

mpro5 functions

both on and offline.

If a patient records a high risk bleed, an alert is sent out from the app to the patient’s treatment centre.

The patient is also advised to contact their treatment centre immediately.

THE SOLUTIONAll data captured on the app is sent and stored on NCC’s central mpro5Hx

website and database. Clinicians can view the information within the ERP and

patients can also access this data via a secure web portal. From here both

parties can review and track treatment history in real time.

06

This in turn can lead to clinicians making more informed

decisions during patient review visits and gives patients

greater management over their condition.

The data is secure at

all points of rest and

communication

throughout the

mpro5Hx solution.

THE MAIN BENEFITS

patients are able to verify the safety of

medication before use. Healthcare professionals

are also alerted about high risk bleeds

The concept of traceability of medication

administration within the patient home is

considered the Holy Grail among healthcare

providers, regulators and drug manufacturers,

and provides the final piece of the supply chain

jigsaw. Working with Crimson Tide has allowed

us to achieve exactly this and its success can be

measured by the global interest in this project

from both healthcare providers as well as the

Pharma and supply chain industries.”

recorded just 4 months after implementation of

the app. This is attributed to greater visibility of

medication usage trends

over patient treatment and bleed history

leading to improved patient care
