Higham Roofing were awarded the role of Principal Contractor and have successfully
refurbished the roof areas of the George Porter Building of the University of Leicester
home to the Chemistry Department of the University of Leicester specified by Esha
Reinforced Bitumen Membranes. The works incorporated a FOC 20 year insurance
backed warranty.
Original roof condition
The George Porter Building houses laboratories, lecture theatres, computer rooms,
study rooms and department staff offices. Due to the purpose of this building,
numerous roof mounted plant and equipment have been positioned to the vast majority
of the roof area. These included fume cupboard extracts providing the potential for the
release of hazardous gases, air handling equipment and air conditioning equipment. All
works had to be managed through daily meetings and permit systems for the
programming of vital fume cupboard shutdowns, alterations and exclusions when in use
along with all remaining roof mounted plant and equipment affecting the internal areas.

Methology and Constraints
Higham Roofing were instructed to remove the chippings, defective asphalt coverings
and cork insulation as defined by the moisture mapping survey from the existing roof are-
as. This was followed by the installation of torch-receivable insulation to make the roof
surfaces uniform, and the installation of two layer Esha Radmat bituminous specification
waterproofing. Pitch Pocket frames and resin were installed to all details and penetrations
where unsuitable for waterproofing.
Special arrangements were made in order to disconnect and degas the air conditioning
units whilst works were carried out in a close proximity and on completion of works all
the Air Conditioning units were re-commissioned. Our team removed all the existing
timber cladding of the tank house, carried out a structural re-strengthening and
Tyvek along with brining all timber on the tank house equally levelled.
After this, the tank house received a Marley Cedral Weatherboarding System to form a
nice finish over a Tyvek Fire Cub.

The complex works schedule then incorporated the following steps.
Firstly, the installation of Gilberts thermostat controlled louver and passive systems,
the replacement of Georgian glazing sections, the removal of redundant rooflights and
structural re-strengthening.
Internal concrete and rebar repair works incorporating Sika 1, mortar and plaster.
Then the laboratory, computer room and classroom was re-plastered and thoroughly
re-decorated.
The existing mosaic facades received new Helifix resin bonded render pins.
Higham Roofing installed a new emergency lighting scheme along with fire alarm
sounders.
The final works included the adaption to the internal BMS cabling and cabling trays and
the installation of new fire doors, fire signage and a red mineral highlighted
walkway.
The quality of workmanship and attention to detail received from Higham Roofing won us
a 2nd phase of roof refurbishment works at the University of Leicester in Autumn 2014.
