ACHIEVING SUCCESS WITH SMARTPLANT® INSTRUMENTATIONChiyoda standardizes on Intergraph® instrumentation solution to support global collaboration and ensure seamless project execution

IDENTIFYING GOALSChiyoda Corporation (Chiyoda), headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, is a world-

leading engineering company with wide-ranging business interests in such fields as

energy, chemicals and petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, environmental technology,

social infrastructure, and industrial facilities. Chiyoda has a strong global presence

with about 7,000 employees, and its main engineering offices are located in Japan,

India, the Philippines, Singapore, and Qatar. Since its founding in 1948, Chiyoda has

built several plants and has global project experience in 46 countries worldwide.

As an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for large-scale

and mega-projects around the world, it is important for Chiyoda's global project

teams to collaborate effectively, regardless of geographical location. The Japanese

EPC wanted to improve its efficiency in the management of instrumentation data,

and decided it needed a more sophisticated system instead of relying on the use of

Microsoft® Excel® spreadsheets.

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES•Enhance global collaboration among Chiyoda's worldwide engineering teams

•Reduce errors and improve consistency of data

•Increase efficiency and productivity

REALIZING RESULTSChiyoda is a longtime Intergraph® customer and is already familiar with Intergraph

technology. It decided to standardize on SmartPlant® Instrumentation as the solution

provides a single source of plant instrumentation data, which is aligned with Chiyoda's

virtual single-office strategy.

Hiroyuki Mogami, manager of the control systems engineering department at

Chiyoda, said, "We have been using SmartPlant Instrumentation as our instrument

engineering master database for over 15 years. The Intergraph solution is used for

almost all of Chiyoda's projects."

SmartPlant Instrumentation is the world's No. 1 instrumentation solution with proven

performance in the global marketplace, used by more than 20,000 professionals

around the world. SmartPlant Instrumentation provides a single source of plant

Intergraph is the leading global provider of engineering and geospatial

software that enables customers to visualize complex data. Businesses

and governments in more than 60 countries rely on Intergraph’s

industry-specific software to organize vast amounts of data to make

processes and infrastructure better, safer, and smarter. The company's

software and services empower customers to build and operate more

efficient plants and ships, create intelligent maps, and protect critical

infrastructure and millions of people around the world.

Intergraph operates through two divisions: Process, Power & Marine

(PP&M) and Security, Government & Infrastructure (SG&I). Intergraph

PP&M provides enterprise engineering software for the design,

construction, operation, and data management of plants, ships, and

offshore facilities. Intergraph SG&I provides geospatially powered

solutions, including ERDAS technologies, to the public safety and security,

defense and intelligence, government, transportation, photogrammetry,

and utilities and communications industries. Intergraph Government

Solutions (IGS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Intergraph Corporation for

the SG&I U.S. federal business.

Intergraph is part of Hexagon (Nordic exchange: HEXA B; www.hexagon.

com), a leading global provider of design, measurement, and visualization

technologies that enable customers to design, measure, and position

objects, and process and present data.

instrumentation data and includes interfaces with most

complementary solutions – such as most automation vendors –

for easy access and data consistency, delivering increased safety,

quality, efficiency, and productivity.

As wiring design is very complex, it was not possible for

Chiyoda to set up a master database when it was using Excel

spreadsheets previously. Using SmartPlant Instrumentation,

the Japanese EPC is now able to establish a master database,

which can be accessed by its engineering teams worldwide. This

single database ensures Chiyoda's project teams are accessing

and sharing accurate, consistent information, thereby improving

the efficiency of the global engineering team. The company's

engineers are able to perform virtual construction of a wiring

model in the SmartPlant Instrumentation system, with all drawings

generated from the model as views. This wiring model can then

be shared with teams located all over the world that are involved

with instrument engineering.

By leveraging a single database, Chiyoda is able to ensure the

integrity and quality of its engineering data. It can easily perform

quality and consistency checks, running reports directly in

SmartPlant Instrumentation. This is a much more effective and

efficient method, compared to having to go through the data

manually in spreadsheets, which is highly prone to mistakes.

SmartPlant Instrumentation can also be integrated with other

Intergraph solutions, such as SmartPlant P&ID. Instrumentation

data can be extracted from the piping and instrumentation

diagram (P&ID), which can then be compared with the data in

SmartPlant Instrumentation using the database functionality. This

is particularly useful during the front-end engineering design stage

as Chiyoda is able to focus on identifying and ensuring high-quality

instrumentation data from the P&IDs, and the instrument index

can be issued immediately after the P&IDs are issued.

MOVING FORWARDChiyoda is developing a training kit on SmartPlant Instrumentation

for its engineers. The company believes that learning from

experience is far more effective, so it is including snapshots of

engineering steps from actual projects in its training kit. Trainees

can begin simulations from any of the saved snapshots in the

training kit to learn about project workflows.

As Chiyoda is committed to innovation, it is constantly updating its

workflows to improve its competencies. The Japanese EPC also

plans to continuously enhance its implementation of SmartPlant

Instrumentation to improve automation and maximize the benefits

of the Intergraph system.
