The Problem: Headquartered in Portland, Oregon, CAPSA Solutions has additional management, manufacturing, and distribution facilities in Columbus, OH, Chicago, IL, Huntersville, NC, Stamford, CT, and Agua Prieta, Mexico, as well as distribution partners in over 60 countries across the globe. CAPSA installed a VoIP solution at their Portland offices. The company quickly discovered that cost was a serious issue. In particular, long distance bills were running up. Because CAPSA does extensive business across the United States and the world, high long distance bills were a serious concern for the company. Another concern was that the company was using a separate provider for long distance, and they wanted to consolidate. Technological limitations of CAPSA’s previous provider meant that the company had to run a private LAN between Portland and Columbus. This point-to-point connection was incredibly expensive on a month-to-month basis. Even though CAPSA had two years remaining on their current contract, they began looking for an alternative solution.

The Solution: BeaAnn Bedford, IT Manager of CAPSA Solutions, contacted Adam L. Thomas of ChaseTek, a Star2Star Communications partner, for help. Ms. Bedford had worked with Adam before and wanted to see what solutions he could offer. Adam suggested Star2Star, and CAPSA went with his recommendation. According to BeaAnn, “I really liked the solution. One selling point in particular was really appealing to me. If we had a problem in one of the offices, we could do failover in the cloud to another office. I also really liked that I could consolidate our entire account across all locations.”

The Result: Initially, Star2Star SIP trunks were installed at CAPSA’s main offices in Portland. The system proved so successful at reducing CAPSA’s monthly expenses and providing disaster avoidance and recovery protections that it was quickly installed in all of the company’s major offices, beginning with Columbus. Star2Star was even able to provide service in CAPSA’s Mexican office. “It’s a good product, and I’m glad we have it.” The savings were so great that they overrode expenses incurred as a result of the time left on the previous deal. “We save between 35% and 45% on our long distance calling bills every month.” Star2Star’s failover capabilities have also proven critical. “When you run as many offices as we do, you’re bound to have some problems eventually. Star2Star’s failover has been great.” CAPSA is also very happy with Star2Star’s call quality. “Some quality of service issues we were having before have all been worked out.” Star2Star even met CAPSA’s need to unify multiple locations and eliminate the private LAN.

Because Star2Star works on virtually any bandwidth (bring-your-own-bandwidth or BYOB), CAPSA was able to replace their private LAN. By installing larger DIAs (Dedicated Internet Access) at each location, CAPSA was able to install superior firewalls and redesign the entire network architecture. CAPSA now uses VPNs with much greater flow-through.

Moving forward, Star2Star’s scalability will be a critical asset to CAPSA. “We are always in acquisition mode, and we are constantly growing as a result. We actively look for additional companies to buy, and we often don’t know for sure until the deal is done. We are definitely planning on installing Star2Star at all future locations, and it’s going to be simple to do.”
