Admiral group is a FTSE 100 company that is headquartered in Cardiff. The entire UK functions of the FTSE100 Insurance giant, worth over £4 billion, are based in Wales. Admiral has grown organically from 60 to 7,000 staff over the last twenty years and it has recruited locally to fill nearly all of those posts. They have won a number of awards such as 2nd place in the 2014 Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For, but what brought them to Wales’ Capital in the first place?

Ceri Assiratti, Admirals HR Director revealed that there were 5 different locations in the running at the time Admiral was setting up but “Cardiff won our hearts”. He explained that, aside from the financial support available, the environment and talent pool in Cardiff was too good to turn down.

“Cardiff went that extra mile” said Ceri, who still sees no reason why Admiral would benefit from being based anywhere else. “People don’t always recognise Wales as great place to come until they get here” he continued, “and being only two hours from London, Cardiff

offers us the benefit of being close to the UK’s financial centre but without the added cost”.

Admiral have benefitted from the local talent pool. 20% of Admirals front line staff are graduates from the local Universities; Cardiff University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, University of South Wales and Swansea University (some of which have helped tailor professional courses to meet the needs of Admiral over the course of the company’s 20 years in Wales).

Admiral have big plans for the future, as shown by their 2015 move to a purpose-built, 220,000 sq ft grade A office building in the middle of Cardiff’s business district that will house over 2,000 of their employees.

As well as the new office in Cardiff, Admiral also have

offices in neighbouring cities Swansea & Newport, which is perfect in terms of travel as all are on the M4 corridor. In 2014, they recruited over 800 staff locally and have significant plans to recruit that number in 2015. They employ around 5,000 in Wales, with another 2000 across offices globally.
