CASCADIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION

SNAPSHOTAs a founding trustee for Cascadia Community College, I was honored to help create the vision for Cascadia as our community’s college long before our doors first opened in the year 2000. After a decade of service as a trustee, I joined the Board of Directors for the CCC Foundation in 2004, where I have had the pleasure to serve ever since.

I am proud of how Cascadia has grown over the years. We have greatly expanded our programs, our facilities, and our services to meet the needs of our ever-growing population. Every year since the day we opened ten years ago we have been overenrolled, serving more students than budgeted by the state. Our first year we had fewer than 2000 students enrolled in classes. Today we serve over 5000 students each year, all pursuing their dreams of higher education.

The dream looks different for each of our students. Over 70% of our students enroll at Cascadia to pursue their associate degrees and transfer to 4-year colleges and universities. Others come to develop their basic skills or seek their GEDs. Many come to expand their workplace expertise or get the professional certificates that will enable them get back to work and help our community thrive.

Of course, with rapidly increasing enrollment comes rapidly increasing demand for financial assistance. The Foundation is committed to supporting important college programs and providing the vital scholarships, grants, and loans to our students that make the difference between living the dream and just dreaming it.

…supporting the Cascadia community of lifelong learners by providing scholarships, developing relationships, and connecting resources.

The tough economy of the last two years not only makes our work more challenging, but also more important than ever. With your support we will continue to change lives and help our economy grow by helping people in our community achieve their dreams.

On behalf of everyone at the Cascadia Community College Foundation, I thank you for making a difference with your generous support. Together, we are building a better future for our students

and our community.

FOUNDATION

CCC Foundation Scholarship recipient Erik Byland graduated from Cascadia in June 2010 with an associate degree in Integrated Studies. In Fall 2010, he transferred to the University of Washington where he has been accepted into the Foster School of Business.

As Cascadia Community College celebrated its 10th Anniversary this past fall, the Cascadia Community College Foundation also proudly celebrated 10 great years of developing resources and providing essential financial assistance to our students in need. I am excited to have joined Cascadia as the new president at such a milestone in its evolution.

This is a time for looking at how far we’ve come and what’s in store for our future service and growth. Even as Cascadia enjoys increased student enrollment

each year, the economic crisis has led to rapidly shrinking state funding. Forecasts for the coming budget are dire and Cascadia faces very real challenges in meeting the needs of our students with fewer and fewer public resources.

In the face of this new economy, the work of the CCC Foundation is more crucial than ever. Foundation support is integral to our efforts to provide the best education possible to our students. We want to empower our students to overcome the financial burdens that stand between them and that education.

We know that education is fundamental to economic growth. I invite you to be a part of the next chapter in the growth and evolution of both our college and our community by supporting the CCC Foundation. The partnerships we forge today will benefit our community for years to come.

Second Chances

Yvenet Valcin is this year’s recipient of the Anderson Tuition Assistance Grant. After completing his associate degree, Yvenet hopes to use the skills and knowledge he’s gaining through his Environmental Technologies and Sustainable Practices program to help rebuild his native Haiti from the devastation of last year’s earthquake.

Through scholarships, loans, and grants, the

CCC Foundation opens doors to new careers,

new dreams, and new hope for a brighter

future. For many students, the financial

support they receive through the CCC

Foundation is the key to a second chance.

Melissa shares, but adds that she is determined to accomplish her goal because she wants a better life for herself and her son.

Last spring, the CCC Foundation selected Melissa as this year’s recipient of the Ina V. Knutsen Scholarship. Ms. Knutsen was a powerful advocate for public education who gave decades of service in the Washington state community college system. In 2007, a generous bequest from Ms. Knutsen created a scholarship specifically to support single parents. Thanks to this scholarship, Melissa Clark is getting the crucial financial support she needs to finish her degree this spring.

As one of the first students in Cascadia’s Environmental Technologies and Sustainable Practices program, Melissa is passionate about reducing her own carbon footprint. She hopes one day to bring sustainable facilities, community gardens, and more to low-income housing projects in the region and says that for the first time in her life, she’s ready to make a difference in the world -thanks to support from donors like you.

Melissa Clark struggled in high school with then undiagnosed ADD and eventually dropped out in frustration. She spent the next 10 years bouncing around from job to job, doing everything from car detailing to retail. In 2008, she decided she was finally ready for something more, but there were some obstacles on her path to a new life.

With help from Cascadia’s Disability Support Services, Melissa worked hard to overcome the challenges of her ADD, but a new baby presented a whole variety of unexpected financial challenges. “Trying to figure out how to make ends meet can sometimes become overwhelming,”
