favourite times of year, when the season gently shifts gear to usher in slightly longer days, a livelier landscape and a brighter mood. Were all turning towards new directions too, pondering how to refresh our homes with the latest furniture, fabrics and colours. one person with an enlightened approach to
decorating is Athena calderone (p40), who has done the layered luxe thing to perfection, breathing life into a sterile new development. Its amazing what the addition of a bit of silk, velvet and faux fur can do! likewise, lykke Hjriis larsen (p80) has stuck to her style guns, applying her own softly minimalist stamp to a mock-Tudor house in Surrey to stunning effect. Putting in a new kitchen is always an exciting, albeit
tense, time in the home-owning journey (the memory still haunts me). our 11-page guide (p123) focuses on the fun part of the process, offering inspiration on everything from the overall design to the latest essential finishing touches. Plenty to look forward to then. enjoy the issue.

MARCH 2014 l i f e s t y l e e t c . c o .u k
What? The Norwegian-born designer, known for his minimal, industrial
aesthetic, studied here in the UK at Kingston University and Central
Saint Martins. He started Magnus Pettersen Studio in 2010, creating
furniture, lighting and accessories.
Why? Pettersens big break came working with Finnish glass
manufacturer Iittala, designing the Leimu table lamp. Hes also
produced accessories for Areaware, worked with design hotel The Thief in Oslo
and recently designed lighting exclusive to Heals.
hoW Would you describe your design philosophy?
I believe in design thats beautiful and well made. It doesnt need anything else.
With my pieces, I always try to do something a bit different, but I still want a lamp
to look like a lamp. Using mixed materials has become part of my style [see the
concrete tape dispenser, left], which helps when trying to incorporate different
elements into one design.
What inspires your designs?
Some projects can be a result of endless sketching, while others can be simply an
interpretation of something I have photographed when being out and about.
What Was the concept behind your lighting for heals?
Theyre based on a 180-degree curve. To avoid making the lamps look simply like
bell jars with light bulbs in, I layered the glass. The walnut was added to contrast
with the glass and mirror the dome shape.
To learn more about Pettersens designs, visit magnuspettersen.com

If neon takes you back to the days of scrunchies and Rubiks cubes, think again luminous shades are back, but now with a sleek new look. These colours radiated their way down the spring/summer 2014 catwalk Ralph Lauren combined them with sharp, tailored shapes, while Yohji Yamamotos layered brights were highlights in more ways than one. Interiors are no less vibrant be kind to yourself by adding just a splash of neon rather than breaking out the fluorescent paint all over. An easy way to work the trend is with accessories Future and Founds grey porcelain tea-light holder makes neon pink all the more shocking, while e15s oak This chair (from Stefan Diezs This That Other collection) has a loud streak, but keeps its wood grain visible for a liveable look. So add a dash of dazzle to your home youll soon be raving about it.

Designer Paolo Piva for Poliform, 2006.Details Metal structure with multi-density polyurethane foam and polyester padding. Available as a modular or fixed model
and in a choice of fabrics and leather, from 9,594.
Background The perfect statement sofa. One of these in a living room is the definitive statement of a devotion to the
aesthetic above the practical and, of course, it also says you
have the lifestyle and the funds not to have to worry about
small, chocolate-covered hands. The term sofa was first used
in France in around 1690 (indeed the word couch comes, as
we all know, from the French verb coucher to lie down, as in
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?). However, the white sofa, as
such, came several centuries later and really made its mark
during the Eighties, when loft living hit its peak and overlarge
seating became the dominant feature in any on-trend living
room. This was the decade when, more than any other, sofas
became an item to sprawl rather than to sit on. Wide and
white, this baby is the classic then, from Italian designer Paolo
Piva. Chic, square and urbane, the Soho shifts more units than
any other sofa produced by high-end Italian furniture maker
Poliform, possibly because its impossible to imagine any living
room in Europe where it wouldnt be a welcome addition.
And as a nod to practicality it even has removable covers.

in a large industrial building down a back street in a grimy part of north London is a wallpaper archive. Thousands of rolls line the walls flocks, florals, geometrics, screen

This is the archive of Cole & Son, which has been selling wallpaper since it was the preserve of only those with country piles or stately homes, back when paper was printed on blocks and flock paper was made on Flocking Fridays (so the dust could settle over the weekend). be gripping enough in itself as a visual history
of the nations changing tastes, but its more
than that. The companys back catalogue
revamped, re-sized and re-coloured has
been the springboard of its current collection.
It has raided its own archive.
Cole & Son is following the trend for
seamlessly taking the old, tweaking it, giving
it a shake about and making it suddenly seem
fresh, relevant and, above all, modern. Take
its new Fontainebleau paper. It features
colourful birds perched in trees and is based
on just a tattered, frayed scrap found in its
archive. A couple of seasons ago, it might have
seemed all wrong to pull out from a dusty
corner now, suddenly, it feels right.
Designs survive, but never in exactly
the same way, explains Shauna Dennison,
creative director at Cole & Son. Some archive
documents have been blown up, while others
have been shrunk down to suit modern
homes, she says. And, naturally, we play
around with repeats and colour.
Of course, being inspired by (even
downright stealing) what has gone before
is not new. Its happened since forever in
music with cover versions and also in fashion,
with companies such as Burberry, Barbour
and even Louis Vuitton plundering and
reworking their own collections. As buyers,
we increasingly want something new, but we
like the familiar too, preferably with a twist
that makes it relevant to our lives right now.
Its no secret that, in harsher times, people
want a level of authenticity in what they buy.
Which is why this spring, Heals is launching
its first range of original fabric designs since
the Seventies, a mixture of new designs, but
also get this several archive-inspired
stripes and florals reworking the Thirties and
Forties (including one by artist Cressida Bell,
descendant of the Bloomsbury Bells).
Head of fabric Pia Benham says the shop is
in the incredible position of having 200 years
of archive to inspire us. We could have used
original designs, but, to be honest, would

re-released and re-coloured. And the trend certainly isnt restricted to wallpapers and fabrics. The Royal Doulton Street Art china, for example, uses 18th-century London images reworked by graffiti artist Pure Evil.
Liberty fabrics have a heritage that dates back to the Pre-Raphaelites re-purposing its considerable archive is something as natural for the design department, as, say, getting off the tube at Oxford Circus. Anna Buruma has been the archivist at Liberty for 16 years and describes its back catalogue as a wonderful source of Liberty DNA. Whats new is not just the re-coloured design and how it is produced (often digitally), but what its applied to. Smartphone and tablet cases printed in updated Liberty prints seamlessly mix heritage style with contemporary needs.
Is there any end to the ways old and new can blend? Back to Pia Benham. So much of modern design is inspired by the past, she says. But weve been lucky theres been so much incredible design in the past 100 years. Maybe thats the reason its resurfacing.
we have wanted to? Im not sure. Instead, she gave designers an archive moodboard to work with. As a result, the subsequent patterns cleverly look new, but are familiar. The range includes one by Zandra Rhodes, who sold her very first design to Heals in the Sixties, which the artist has now re-coloured.
So, is there a design firm out there that isnt eyeing up its archives? It would seem not.
This season, Little Greenes Rvolution Papers hark back to archival designs sourced from Paris and London, but use ultra-modern technology to produce them. Zoffany describes its archive as a living resource for inspiration. The company holds the keys to the William Morris collection, so it can use an original Morris tapestry design and digitally reproduce it as a fabric. Sanderson also has a collection that dates back centuries.
Osborne & Little with its 45-year-old archive updates its designs to incorporate new technology, such as its Coronata Star design now digitally printed and others are
A real trend today is for looking to both the past and the future I think thats down to a mix of factors, including the economic climatePia Benham, head of fabric at Heals

is the word that comes to mind when entering this New York
apartment. But possibly shock would have been more appropriate
when owners Athena and Victor Calderone first moved in. I walked into
the hallway and thought it looked like a bad hotel lobby, with lots of
metalwork, stark white paint and fluorescent lights, Athena says.
I looked at my husband and said, I dont think I can do this
As first impressions go, its not the best especially when youre an
interior designer who has spent two years watching your new home
being built, literally, from the ground up.
The couple bought their penthouse, located in Dumbo, Brooklyn, in
2010, when it was still a twinkle in the architects eye. Wed always lived
in conversions, but we loved what the developer, Toll Brothers, had
planned for the building, says Athena. It took inspiration from the
industrial environment, using concrete for the interior walls and basing
the exterior ironwork on the Manhattan Bridge, which can be seen
from the living room window. We came here in hard hats for two years
as the construction progressed and it was exciting to be part of that
process. But I had a panic when we walked into the completed space
for the first time last year.
Thats an understatement. Athena disliked the place so much, she
put it on the market and had found a buyer, but after taking a breath, she
decided to use her skill as an interior designer to transform the space.
I have to credit Victor for that, says Athena. He told me to look at the
apartment as if I was designing it for a client. Plus, by that time, Id fallen
in love with the light that comes into the bedroom each morning.
Her challenge was to take the cold and austere setting and turn it
into a warm, luxurious family home. We thought we were just making
a few cosmetic changes adding some colour, taking out the strip lights
but it turned into a lot more than that, Athena laughs. They installed
a window at the top of the stairs to let light flood in, replaced the metal
stair rail with a walnut panel and repainted the white walls in a moody
palette of navy, grey and teal. And because theyd been on site during
much of the construction, they realised there was a void above the
kitchen that could be opened up and used as Victors recording studio.
This definitely feels like my most grown-up home so far, says
Athena. I wanted to use tactile, rich materials here, such as silk, velvet
and fur partly as a reaction to the bleakness of the space when we
first moved in. It also contrasts with the familys summer house in
Amagansett, in upstate New York (featured in Livingetcs April 2013
issue). One day, I want to feel like a hippie in a flea market; the next,
my look is more lush and elegant and both those elements come
across in my homes, Athena says with a smile. At Amagansett, I wanted
to capture the nature part of me. In the Dumbo home, I was keen to
express my more sophisticated side.
For Athena, its not as straightforward as simply layering on opulent
finishes. I believe in mixing styles and materials, so Ive put a brutalist
metal lamp close to the velvet sofa and mid-century Danish chairs, she
says. There always has to be some grittiness alongside the clean lines.
With the warehouses and waterside views of the Statue of Liberty
and skyscrapers soaring upwards from cobblestone streets, Athena
could be talking about the Dumbo district itself. I couldnt ignore
our location when it came to decorating, not least because of the view
from the windows, she says. I was really aware of creating continuity
between the ironwork of the building and the Manhattan Bridge,
so I used industrial furniture and metalwork, but added warmth with
rosewood and organic shapes. She pauses. There really is a kind
of magic when it all comes together.

Take one mock-Tudor house in Surrey, gut it, then add pale neutrals and an impressive art collection to turn it around. Thats just what Lykke has done
Home profileThe owners Lykke Hjriis Larsen,
an interior designer, her husband
and their three children.
The ProPerTy A detached house
in Surrey, built in 1920. The ground
floor has a living room, kitchen-
diner, utility room, two store rooms,
a games room, boot room, study,
WC, wet room and a second kitchen.
On the first floor there are four
bedrooms, two bathrooms, a WC
and the couples dressing room and
master bathroom. The loft has been
converted into the master bedroom,
with an adjoining sitting room and
another bathroom.
dining areaI wanted soft touches of colour in
the house, says Lykke, who sent a
sample of the green leather on the
chairs to the wallpaper company, so it
could work the shade into the design.Get the look The hand-painted silk wallpaper is from de Gournay. The upholstered chairs are by Philippe Hurel. The dining table was found in an antiques shop in Denmark. For similar designs, try Nicky Cornell.

tradition to the open-plan interior.
The wood is not completely stable,
says Lykke. It expands and contracts,
which has caused a few problems but
it looks great!Get the look The island unit forms part of a Boffi kitchen. The china is by Royal Copenhagen. The wide Douglas fir boards are by Dinesen. For a similar woven basket, try Store. The large photographic artwork hanging on the living room wall is by Danish artist Trine Sndergaard.

Art is good for the soul,
Get the look Vintage Chinese

Old Japan.
says Lykke Hjriis Larsen, looking around at the portraits, abstract
paintings, photographs and sculptures displayed in her home. It says a lot
about what you like and who you are. Her mother was an art dealer back in
their native Denmark and she was constantly being taken to exhibitions as
a child. For me, artwork makes a home, says Lykke.
Before she had children, a career in sales and marketing took Lykke
around the world. She lived in Asia, South America, Switzerland and
Norway, picking up treasures along the way and gradually rethinking how
her fellow Danes do interiors. Back home, we use a lot of white, but I prefer
a softer, natural palette, says Lykke. I like the clean lines of Scandinavian
style, but think it sometimes lacks cosiness. I love English and French
country dcor, so Ive tried to blend that with a Nordic aesthetic here.
A mix of country and Scandi prevails throughout Lykkes spacious home
in Surrey. Alongside Danish classics, such as the wide, pale Dinesen
floorboards, are mellow tones taken straight from nature. There are
touches of green on the chairs and wallpaper in the dining space hints
of lavender and myriad greys too. There really are 50 shades here and I
enjoyed choosing each and every one of them! laughs Lykke. They dont
strike the eye, but they help create a warm atmosphere.
Perhaps the best place to see Lykkes vision of country cosiness meets
Nordic restraint is the kitchen. Here, chunky oak beams ram the space with
rustic style and act as a bold contrast to the sleek Boffi units. They also
perform a serious function, supporting the floor above. I promised myself
those beams, says Lykke. They are more than just decoration, though,
so I feel better about putting them in.
Using wooden beams instead of steel was just one of hundreds of
decisions Lykke made as she project-managed the 18-month redesign of
the house. With help from architectural designer Chris Lee, she chose to
clad the external walls in wide, grey boards, giving the property a Cape Cod
vibe, light years away from its mock-Tudor origins, while inside, walls were
knocked down to create an open, flowing space. My husband says we
should have just built a new house, says Lykke, smiling, but weve kept
the outer walls and, more importantly, the soul of the original house,
while also introducing some character.
Lykkes bible during the rebuild was a folder she put together before
the familys furniture and art went into storage, containing photos and
measurements of all their possessions. Its the most useful thing Ive ever
done, she says. It meant I could design alcoves to fit favourite sculptures
and could leave wall panelling out of a room if it meant a painting wouldnt
fit above it. Art, for Lykke, is an essential ingredient for the feel of the house,
so finding the right space for each piece was vital.
While artwork brings personality, casual country touches, including
logs stacked next to the rotating wood burner that hangs between the
kitchen and dining space, keep the look and the temperature warm.
Lykke regularly throws dinner parties for 20 or more people, with the table
from the terrace dragged in to make a double dining space.
Being able to enjoy food, fire, friends and family in this house is both
a triumph of Lykkes design and a very Danish ambition. In Denmark, we
have the word hyggelig, she says. It means cosiness. Its how we all want to
live and eat, to combat the cold and dark. The hyggelig vibe seems to work
well in grey old Britain too. Absolutely! says Lykke. As a child, I could swim
in the sea in April, like a true Viking, but not any more. I want to feel cosy
now and I do here, all year round.
