¡Salud!.

To the course of the days the traveling house
continued its walk between the abundance of
events in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara,
this nomadic pilgrimage fed Sociacusia
substantially. A silent ally accompanied the
multiple passages, acting sometimes like lease,
and others supporting the caravan with equip-
ment and human material. “Laboratorio Senso-
rial (Sensorial Laboratory)”, a multifunctional
empty space where several glorious chapters of
the cycle were forged, we’ll talk of 3 briefly.
Last March we received 2 French artists, Dafne
Vicente Sandoval and Xavier Lopez, also our
old friend Mauricio Valdes. The event at issue,
a workshop of fagot extended techniques, there
weren’t fagot players but the assistants were
fascinated with the secrets of the instrument,
and the Axolotl Ensemble formed by the 3
presented “Interzone” the perfect interaction
between an organic instrument (fagot), a
electrical one (guitar), and laptop.
For the month of June the colossus of Ghilardi
changed in a factory of experimental silkscreen
printing as a result of “Octografía”, a peculiar
action where the squid acted like sonorous raw
material, later these sounds were manipulated
and modified by the artists Miguel Mesa,
Esteban De La Monja and Yair Lopez, while
Charlie Padilla did the own thing baking
t-shirts to untimed fire with allusive implicit
legends to this event, the garments even are in
the wardrobes of the visitors.
Beginning September of fortuitous way we had
the visit of Dave Phillips of fortuitous way, this
Swiss musician who played in his early years
as part of the grindcore project Fear of God.
The Laboratorio Sensorial’s PA never shook
like with the tremendous sonorous discharges
and the frantic howls combined to the atro-
cious images that show a reality that we do not
want to confront respect to the man and his
abuse against the animals. To the term a burial
silence, and a goodbye of obvious lessons.
The peak of this alliance lived when the Senso-
rial Laboratory took by assault the City of
Guanajuato, an unforgettable highway trip
with the premise to make sound the Tran-
sonica Festival, an unexpected misfortune, the
pleasing surprise of “Cine a mano”, the blos-
soming of “Libertad Sonora (Sonorous Free-
dom)”, and the turn of the screw for the
consolidation of Sonora.
With this edition of casanube we dismissed a
full year of satisfactions and growth. Cheers!.

It would be impossible to include in a text of
little more than 2 pages the slopes that
concert music has at the moment, either
would be possible to make an introduction to
the musical writing and all the processes that
it has suffered throughout history, and still
more difficult it would be that I, without
being a person really trained in these fields,
was the indicated person to speak of so deep
and non-uniform subjects. Assuming the risk
I will dare to speak in this text, something
argumentative, of a subject that has called my
attention a lot in the last months.
As a result of a great project that I am realiz-
ing this year with the support of the FONCA,
I have had to make myself many questions.
The project consists of the accomplishment of
software, essentially, for the improvisation
for an instrument and computer. In the initial
scene I wanted to make a series of studies for
guitar and computer for young interprets in
which several aspects were contemplated
that, I consider, are not enough in the forma-

tion of a musician: The improvisation and the
incursion in mixed music. Nevertheless every-
thing has been changing as I go on and my
present restlessness is ampler so that it contem-
plates not only the guitar but any other sound
generator, acoustic or electronic and more
limited as far as the generative thing of the
system since it is contemplated as a follower of
interprets.
One of the great challenges has not been to
create a software that detonates the ideas of the
interpreter, either an instrument of virtual
instruments, but that its gets to be more, like an
interlocutor of these ideas that arise when we
improvised, I am not going to torture anybody
explaining the entrails of the system, in fact it is
not very relevant in what I want to approach in
this text.
To solve a system of interaction for computer is
not the most complicated task for a non-well-
prepared-programmer as myself nowadays. The
challenge is in finding a balance between what is
technically possible to be obtained and the
aesthetic reaches that a system therefore can offer. The system at first was thought for young people who
were not professional in the improvisation or in mixed music. At the moment, everything tends to be stable
and sufficiently intuitive for any level of interprets. Since this is about an atmosphere that “understands”
what happens on the basis of statistical on three parameters: dynamics, the rate and the height.

Electro acoustic music and free improvisation have been the unique musics that have generated
in me an almost immediate bond. The free improvisation, is a gender that contains many of the
elements that satisfy me in music and which I enjoy to do and to listen, mainly when it is one or
two people, for the collective sessions I have not had luck (I’ve heard that they can get to be
good). From the challenge that a musician, composer or sound artist facing a space without
guide, without a beginning nor an ending, the indetermined things of everything around an
improvisation session, to the acoustics, since this type of musics have found a space in museums,
galleries, patios of cultural centers, etc., the acoustics are not the best ones, just to mention. All
these are elements that call my attention around free improvisation and its circumstances. Also
the public that we found in these sessions is very diverse and with a very different formation,
which is very refreshing.
Along with the development of improvised music, the music of last the 60 years and its form of
writing have undergone changes and advances that allow a level of the highest control on the
interpretation. For example, the work Mikrophonie I (1965) for tamtam and 2 microphones of
Karlheinz Stockhausen, in the music sheet the controls of the console are contemplated, the
manipulation of filters of frequency in real time and a series of indications that drum players as
well as the sound technician must perform during the interpretation of this work. At the moment
there also exist open writing forms, works
where the interpreters must suppose
certain things and other times to imagine
giving him a direct responsibility in the
composition of the work, and not only on
the interpretation. Some advances have
promoted the existence of what we know as
graphical music sheet.
The graphical notation has been the start
of works where the individual or collective
creation becomes unique, since its concep-
tion is mainly morphologic, and the syntax
of the piece does not describe the phrases
or gestures in the music sheet. Without
getting to be a piece of free improvisation,
the game between many parameters like
the risky and the certain thing; the free and
the undetermined thing; the creative and
the recreational thing. These are elements
that push us doubtless to create and to
enjoy pieces with a great artistic challenge
and at the same time takes
interpreters/composers to a technical
exploration, of the timber and the rhythm
where usually not so resorted places in
present music can be found, and that is
always thanked for…
An extremely interesting aspect for me on
the graphical annotation is that it can be
used for dance, theater, performance, or
any other discipline where temporary
events happen. For the musical interpreta-
tion it has an aspect, if I may called that
way, of democratization so that it makes
possible to musicians and sound artists
a lexicon and a common land among
them and extends the possibility of
intermediatic or trans-disciplinary
projects.
From the Treaty of the Musical Objects
by Pierre Schaeffer, the Espectromor-
phical theory of Denis Smalley, even
complex methods of algorithmic
musical generation and to the sponta-
neous graphical notation have the need
of referring in the previous writing that

it justifies what a sound in the form of metaphor represents. This can bring about a
vicious circle in which it seems not to happen much. Nevertheless and very slowly
there seem to exist projects that deepen in this sense and look for solutions or at
least conventions.
All these considerations together, the technological development, the improvisation
and the advances of the present musical writing are altogether the problematic that
have arisen and that of some form I have been formulated for the accomplishment
of this project. Great questions exist that will surely not be solved at the end of this
work, nevertheless as I continue, they become less shapeless. I will consider that
the project is finished when I get to propose works that consist of graphical score
and software that allows the controlled improvisation for an instrument, voice or
any other generator of sound that feeds software. From the results of this project I
will be able to measure the reaches to be able to generate extensions and to adapt it
or to migrate it to other systems.
Many of the ideas spilled here can be very questionable, I myself would erase more
than half of them if I analyze them in a pair of weeks… But in the end what inter-
ested me about the invitation was to share a little all these doubts and challenges in
which my present work is concentrating.

The electro-shock machine is an ancient and peculiar
electric device, developed by the popular cleverness of
Mexican people, for the “kidding” and the Business, the
masters of the shock, wander around bars offering the
services of this sui generis enterprise of them, they hit
tirelessly two metal tubes as if it were a tic tic instru-
ment, advertising their electric shocks. With only 10
pesos one can take these tubes, one in each hand and is
literally electrocuted, twisting against one’s will thanks
to the muscular contraction, the masters, carry along a
box to which they connect the tubes using cables. As he
turns a “power meter” of the device, the amount of
electrons that flow through the body used as conductor,
raises. The use of the shock machine is used in the
context of popular culture. It is characteristic of bars or
pubs, where the phenomenon of the "brave" occurs,
who under the influence of alcohol, considers himself
vulnerable. This combined to the fun, the ego, sponta-
neity, the flow of adrenalin and social pressure, moti-
vates the rent of the shock machine, but mainly it is due

generally, does it again. Also the electrical
charge in group is common receiving estab-
lishing an empathic sensorial relation as a
kind of neuronal synapse. The shock box is a
very simple circuit: a TIP41 transistor, a 6 to
120 volts transformer, a switch, a 50 k poten-
tiometer, a LED and its resistance, the tran-
sistor impels an oscillation when being gener-
ated a cut by saturation that when being
connected to the transformer induces a
pulsating tension that amplifies by induction
towards the load, the voltage recovers its
complete oscillation passing from direct
current to alternate rising from 0 to 100 volts
consuming from 6 to 10 mA, the system is fed
by a nominal tension on 6 volts dc with a
consumption of 500ma.
I’ve been experimenting with these shock
boxes, looking for the way to associate the
experience of the electrical perception to the
nature of the sound and the phenomenon of
listening. The sound propagates by through
the oscillation of energy in the materia, our
basic perception of the sound is when these
waves use the air as half of propagation and
make vibrate to our eardrum being inter-
preted by our nervous system and our brain,
our auditory system can listen certain
frequencies, between a rank and another.
The horns are electro acoustic transducers
that transform an electromagnetic field into
one acoustic mechanic; the diaphragm of
these horns oscillates by variation of alternat-
ing voltage, propagating the sound in the
air. Using these principles, I tried to
correlate the changing oscillations of the
sound in frequencies that amplified the
voltage that the human body perceives and
is propagated in our nervous system
thanks to water molecules of which 70% of
our body are made up and the molecular
vibration to which she is subject, the
sensorial perception allows us to catch
information of the surroundings that are
processed by our neurons, through electri-
cal pulses of micro voltages, the synthe-
sized sound as electrical oscillations and
alternating pulses of low voltage are
amplified to alter our perception in the
ranks of synesthesia.

C H A E, is an audio shock system of five independent channels, with analogous system of
telephone dialing, patch bay and photo control resistances.
Five rows of wood benches were placed in the space lent by a church. The benches were facing
where normally the altar is, there the CHAE system was placed on a wood lectern.
The public, in small groups of 50 people, entered and sat down in rows of 10 people, they were
requested to hold hands. In the ends of each row there were electrodes that
were taken by those that sat down in each end, a pair of speakers were
placed in the ends of each row
The C H A E system, was developed with sound oscillators which frequen-
cies are controlled by means of the use of gloves with a matrix of leds
placed on each hand, implemented as a luminance sequence maker, since
when emitting programmed luminance variations to the photo-resistance,
allows to be able to control actively and in an independent way the five
audio signals, the use of the gloves gave the freedom of being able to turn
five marking discs of old telephones, sending communicative pulses to
each signal. The sound oscillations were distributed independently feeding
back itself indirectly with the expectation of the public interconnected by a
sensorial communion, that occurred when perceiving simultaneously the
electric fluxes in the body, thanks to the personal interconnection since,
when holding hands, a communicative electric flux as neuronal synapse,
looked for to bring about an involuntary catharsis of revitalizing extreme
pleasures.

Let’s imagine a practical situation of a field sound record-
ing in which the sonic source to be recorded is not still: I
mean, that is moving all along. As complicated as it may
seem, anyway our interest in its sound makes us record it.
When better understanding the quite “slippery” nature of
certain sound sources, we begin to understand that this
mobility is not only in the physical context: a sound, being
a constituent component of a site, not only a sonic place,
but also ethnographic (urban anthropology), presents
special displacements: it disappears of the site, it becomes
visible node or audible, it enters back to the site, expands
its borders; I mean, it can be a node or landmark that
moves; we discover that these displacements occur in a
site that is not only listened to or recorded by an observer,
also the site listens to us, or appears to us at a certain
moment without a warning, often surprising us.
For example: when by chance there is a situation or person

whose sound take or interview is completely pertinent to the subject on which one investi-
gates, it is impossible not to think about found sound, in urban anthropology in action. The
not-causal nature of the event is in itself a contribution to the same recording, as it helps us to
be able to better define a contextual frame of the site. The recorded site and its components
reveal a behavior, a character, and ways to become visible in major or minor degree.
This concrete anecdote exemplifies the idea that is tried to expose. During my wandering
through Mexico I thought that I needed to find an person to interview who helped me clear-up
my questions about the sonidero movement, whose pursuit was part of my investigation.
While thinking about it, I took a taxi outside the Tasqueña bus station, on the south of Mexico
City. I started to chat with the driver, who turned out to be ex-dj from the sonidero scope, he
told me very valuable histories about the movement in its origins, which beyond the capital
city seems to be the distant news, but legitimate and real in the State of Mexico and the Capi-
tal. My emotion was enormous when obtaining an invaluable document for my work.
I traveled to Mexico in two occasions to make an artistic residence. My objective had two
simultaneous directives, on the one hand, an investigation on sound art applied to the
phenomenon of the cumbia in Mexico and ranger (ranchera) music in Colombia; and on the
other, a work in parallel of academic type, first attending a workshop about composition for
interactive multimedia, and later changing my role, to a professor of a workshop about sound
installation for new people in this matter. The academic transit and my residence occurred in
a natural and rewarding way in the facilities of
the Mexican Center for Music and Sound Arts
(CMMAS by its initials in Spanish) in the city of
Morelia.
I could discover that to be in Mexico, working
with the sound and the communities that emit it
and receive it, makes that the routes and their
methodologies are very different from those from
a tourist. Later on, with the experiences and
interchanges that begin to happen, I realized that
the sound also could be looking for one. Mean-
while, it is recorded; streets, events, planned and
random situations. It is tried to maintain a
certain "loose focal point", a form of open dispo-
sition and way that Julio Cortázar called "to
become a phenomenal sponge".
The reason for the residence, thanks to the
support of the FONCA (Mexico) altogether with
the Ministry of Culture of Colombia, was to
investigate about what I called "Natural Children"
(word game that granted the title to my work) of
certain musical styles in the context of certain
sound and musical migrations, with its conse-
quent impacts in the places where they have
gotten to sound, already far from its zones of
origin: specifically, the evolutions of cumbia in
Mexico, as well as of the ranchera in Colombia.
I realized that the actions and reactions of the
"receptive" town in relation to those initially
"visitor" musics become agents who model new
versions of original airs. A mestization, an evolu-
tion occurs, which is sometimes not seen neces-
sarily with affability by the origin country,
as well as in other cases it is received
without a question to then be made avail-
able for its deformation or reform, accord-
ing on how it is watched.
As in all investigation and its process there
are essential questions and the questions
that I asked were the following: What
happens to the cumbia when it arrives to
Mexico? And to the ranchera when it
arrives to Colombia?
I thought: if the cumbia sonidera can be
considered a sort of “bastard son” of the
cumbia original of Colombia (for example),
a sound installation on materials recorded
in events of Mexican cumbia can be another
valid product, result of other hybridiza-
tions: melting product of musical, social,
anthropological, plastic and performative event, with the sound
like raw material and subject.
The methodological frame within which the investigation was
carried out took to me to recordings of field, and simultaneously to
participate actively in the academic life of the CMMAS: first as
student of a workshop and soon as professor of another one. It
seemed important to me to be always near enthusiastic people
about these subjects.
In my first trip (2010) my work participating in a workshop began
simultaneously, as interviewer, and producer of recordings of field.
I went to DF, Morelia and Guadalajara among others places, where
I was in contact with collectors, people of the radio and music
investigators.
The second trip (2011) was planned to direct my workshop and to
consolidate all the work of investigation and recordings.
The experiences of recording sounds in Mexico made me discover
that it is a country easy to record, I mean, where people are curious
and have a disposition. There is a sort of platform culture
(sidewalk) in which you live and let live. Therefore it was possible
there to go out with visible recorder in hand or suitcase equipment
without a problem of security for me, nor a factor of annoyance for
people.
Nobody made questions on my work of sound taking; all collabo-
rated with joy: the organillero of Coyoacán, the ex--sonidero taxi
driver, the opener of the Sonora Dinamita, all were outlined as
characters of this sound anthropology.
A crucial moment of the investigation was my attendance to a
sonidero event in the outskirts of the DF (Ecatepec, State of
Mexico), event which for a long time I was tracking. I got to be in a
celebration of the group POLYMARCHS, which includes legends of
the sonidero movement such as Sonido Pancho de Tepito, Sonido
Siboney and Sonido Sonorámico.
I was surprised when seeing how the celebration began with a
complete turn of Colombian music. Besides being a witness, I

became a person who registered the mestization and integration of two cultures. To be able to
participate in this living process was something transforming in my way to feel and to live Latin
America. The loudspeakers located all around the place, sounded in turns. This sound that came
from different points according to the sonidero system that was programming music and animating
people, made me think of a celebration organized by a sort of IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et
Coordination Acoustique/Musique, Paris) of popular and third-world extraction (including the
self-constructed loudspeakers, of homemade manufacture, with its defects and virtues). The event
was for me like an all sensorial one: the basses, the robot lights and the Styrofoam, along with
incidental musics and the narrations of the sonideros djs, surrounding all dancers in an atmosphere
of mystery, belonging, and physical discharging simultaneously.

As a part the residence I had designed from Colombia a workshop on installation and sound art,
called " TAKEN SOUND, TRANSFORMED SOUND, INSTALLED SOUND”. The workshop was
always thought considering that, nowadays, the target group of a workshop on installation and
sound art could be very diverse; there I realized that was what interested me indeed: opening the
chance expecting to obtain a group of students who could come from the most varied schools and
tendencies, from different paths of life and jobs: an interdisciplinary work. It had already managed
to work in this type of workshops with architecture college students and design in Bogota, thus I
thought that it could give very positive results in this new context.
People from many scopes met: there were musical composers, djs,
sound producers, radio producers, graduated electronics engi-
neers and in course, people who worked as pre-school and
primary education teachers: a definitively hybrid group.
The workshop was inspired by my somewhat unfortunate experi-
ences seeing and listening works of art with sound components
(or of sound art itself). I verified that the sound invoice of many
seen and listened works gave not very flattering or consistent
results, and could identify quickly that this lack of quality in the
sound component of works was simply a lack of education in
technical matter in the artists; that yes, clarifying that the perhaps
weak part of the works was only that one, since almost always the
works that I saw by the world in diverse contexts (not only the art
gallery) conceptually used to be strong; nevertheless they were
poor on the sound as plastic material and its quality.
I knew clearly then that my work as workshop coordinator did not
have to concentrate in the conceptual thing: rather it had to
contain a great wealth in technical subjects against the sound
thing, since in the end the result would show as plastic material
and had to fulfill certain standards of sound quality stricto sensu.
The workshop was a "toolbox" for students to use at their jobs and
it would make them simultaneously feel more integrated to the
technical process that the quality sound plastic looks for.
They were five intensive days of techniques of recording, process-
ing, and assembly of sound signal, besides obtaining technical
resources, disco and bibliographical.
The workshop ended up with a public presentation of the results
obtained from the TAKEN SOUND, TRANSFORMED SOUND,
INSTALLED SOUND, with recording binnacles, the new knowl-
edge acquired by the students, and the set of ideas of the group,
placed in the space in an integral way.
In five days we fulfilled the assignment. In the final event the
participants played in real time, recording the sound of the event
with a microphone technique studied in the same workshop.
The group fulfilled the objective performing a public presentation of the
results of their work. The students carried out a performance of their
sounds, in which they interpreted and processed sound in real time. The
audio of the performance was recorded with a microphone technique
studied in the same workshop.

The most important conclusion on all my trip experience was: the
dynamic in our musics reveal this mestization not only as something
inevitable, but also necessary for the musical and cultural development
of Latin America, as well as by extension, of the towns that are them-
selves surrounded in these mestizations, without concerning their
geographic origins.
This so called "inevitable mestization" of our musics also revealed
something much more obvious and close to the interior of the workshop
to me: the interaction between a Colombian professor and Mexican
students already was itself a mestization of a certain type, which often
occurs in all ephemeral communities: in the ideas, in the ways we speak
and describe, on humor, a sort of metalanguage was woven. It was very
pleasing to discover so many characteristics in common and simultane-
ously so many differences that they attracted to us mutually. And I could
attend a hybrid idea, product of different thoughts, one more mestiza-
tion.
This would be my final comment on the investigation, the binnacles, the
recordings, the chats, and my role as student and as teacher. All this
came together in a mestization. The processes and experiences were, in
the end, mestizations.
For example: in the sonidero movement a genuine need of construction
of a new cultural identity, yet with all that includes the sonidera culture,
with its love for the "sound system", its permanent search of identities,
that sort of invented nationality where a "chilango" programs a Discos
Fuentes cumbia (Colombian well-known tropical music label) recorded
in the Sixties to which the public responds enthusiastically and dances.
The sonidero event: social event and sound installation at the same
time, with music sounding from different parts from the enclosure
according to the dj; a multi-speakers installation in all their right and
also a social event in all its force. A mestization in the heat of accom-
plishment, a hot furnace.
That same music that we did in the workshop was a mestization on
the verge of shock, of liquefaction and mixes of glances. Thus it
sounded, and it did not concern his dense plastic nature at the time of
drawing attention: a secretary of the CMMAS indicated her deep
interest to us in what she heard. Having woken the interest of non-
specialized public up in these subjects was for all a great satisfaction.
A mestization of listening groups in this case.
For that reason that not-causality that revealed Mexico before my
ears showed finally like a mirror of experiences also lived in Bogota.
These experiences always lead by mestizations opening itself a path.
Everything indicates that the lands and destinies to where these Latin
American folk music have arrived (in the beginning always “as
visitors”), are favorable guests, welcoming the “visitors” sounds
openly, with disposition and receptivity. In that facility for the inter-
cultural assimilation, in that “giving themselves to the hybrid”,
legitimate brotherhood between nations and towns can be perceived.
In the end, I verified what intuited from the beginning: the “children”
are not “natural”.
