2014 TEAMLEADER GUIDE
WELCOME TEAM CAPTAINS! As a team leader and as a fundraiser, you may be asked questions about apraxia and the Walk for Apraxia®.
The following contains background information to help you answer these questions and also provide you with
information to share with potential team members and donors.
WHO IS CASANA?CASANA is the only national organization dedicated exclusively to the interest and needs of children with
apraxia of speech and their families. CASANA’s mission is to improve the support systems in the lives of children
with apraxia of speech so that each child is afforded their best possibilities to reach their full potential in
speech and communication.
• Each year CASANA’s Apraxia-KIDS website delivers over 2 million pages of apraxia
information to 375,000 people in 190 countries.
• Two hundred and fifteen children in the U.S. and Canada have iPads and cases through
CASANA’s iPads for Apraxia program to use for speech practice and communication.
• Every year CASANA provides educational events and training for over 2,000 parents
and professionals.
• CASANA’s email listserv, twitter feed, Facebook groups and pages provide information
and support to over 30,000 people worldwide.
• CASANA's Apraxia Research Grant program is the only source of dedicated apraxia
research funding in the world.
• CASANA has provided intensive training to forty SLPs in order to increase high level
expertise in childhood apraxia of speech in all regions of the U.S. and Canada.
• Program and research-related expenses represent 85% of CASANA’s total expenses.

Children with apraxia of speech have extreme difficulty learning to
clearly say syllables and words. Although a child with apraxia understands
language and knows the words that he or she would like to say, the brain
does not send accurate messages to the muscles of the lips, tongue and
jaw, telling those muscles how, when, and in what order to move so that
those mouth parts can produce the words clearly. With early intervention
and appropriate, intensive speech therapy, children with apraxia
can and do improve in their speech and communication.
TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL TEAM LEADER1. There is no “I” in “Team”: Recruit, recruit, and recruit. Look to your family, friends, and business associates
first. Then ask them to recruit!
2. Use the Online Tools. Register online and take advantage of the fundraising tools like the following:
• Create your own team website or personalize your website to show your peers how important
this is to you and everyone involved.
• Send personal e-mails for online fundraising.
• Track online and offline donations.
3. Create Team Swag. Get your team geared up and wear a team t-shirt with pride at your local walk or
create team signs to rally the troops.
4. Individual fundraising is the key to success. Aim High. Online fundraising and letter-writing campaigns are
the easiest and most successful way to raise money! You are capable of more than you know. You can reach—
even surpass—every goal you and your team sets out to accomplish. Push yourselves, set high goals, and work
hard for incredible results.
5. Talk the Walk. You have the tools to communicate fast and easily. Update your team often. Distribute
information and progress regularly. Spread the word everywhere you go and in every possible way, including
creative methods of communication and advertising.
6. Lead Your Team. You are leading your team to success. Successful teams are organized. Hold team meetings
to discuss theme ideas, fundraising efforts, goal progress, event schedules, and brainstorming sessions for new
ideas. When you registered as a Team Leader you agreed to provide your email address to the Walk Coordinator
to stay in touch. They will likely contact you, so look out for their emails!
7. Partner with your Community. Throw a fundraising party and invite everyone. Host a wraparound event (see
page 5 for more information).
8. Kick it o Right! Throw a kick-off party, and invite everyone. Hosting a kickoff party for your team members
is a great way to share your plans, discuss goals and get excited and motivated for the fundraising campaign. Provide
information on how your guests can be involved. Make it easy. Have computers on site, ready to get them signed
up and/or paper copies of the registration form.
9. Celebrate your success. Be the Leader. Be early on the day of the walk, greet your team, be prepared with
t-shirts and information, and be an example of enthusiasm and positive energy on the day of the main event. Your
attitude will be contagious and your team will be a force of enthusiasm and success. Enjoy entertainment, snacks
and refreshments, meet other shining star families and much more!
10. Acknowledge their eorts. When all is said and done, let your team members know how great they are.
Send personalized thank-you notes expressing your gratitude for their involvement and hard work.

Walk for Children with Apraxia Funds go toward CASANA programs and research. For example, funds donated have helped to: Rebuild and redesign the Apraxia-KIDS informational
website; run the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Intensive Training Institute to develop moreapraxia expertise among speech-language pathologists; provide small speech therapy grants;
create the Apraxia Research Registry to aid researchers in learning more about the causesand outcomes of childhood apraxia of speech; fund research into effective treatments and
diagnosis of children with apraxia; provide iPads and protective cases for children with apraxiafrom moderate to low income families; bring international researchers together to
share state of the art research, collaborate and move apraxia research forward.
FUNDRAISING The key to fundraising is to: Ask, Follow up, follow up again, and send thank yous!
• Online fundraising is where it’s at! It’s easy, you don’t have to mess around with stamps, you
can send to hundreds of people with the click of a mouse and your donors can pay by credit card.
Utilize your Headquarters through the walk website to get the most out of your efforts.
• Once you have registered online, you will be able to use your username and password to create
your own fundraising webpage.
• You can customize your page at any time and this will help you in your fundraising efforts.
Share your story, add a photo and personalize your page!
LETTER-WRITING & EMAIL CAMPAIGNSLetter writing and online fundraising work well together. Encourage each team member to send out a
personalized letter to their contact list. Not sure who to send a letter to? Use the enclosed donor worksheet
for ideas as to who to send one to.
The letter should include the following:
• Your purpose and personal motivation in participating in a Walk for Apraxia event.
• Information about CASANA
• Pictures of yourself, team members and shining stars who you are walking for.
RAISING AWARENESS IN YOUR COMMUNITYThere are many ways team leaders and participants can help publicize the Walk in the local community. If you
need additional information or materials, contact the Walk Coordinator.
1. Become a neighborhood leader! Ask your Walk Coordinator for a supply of posters and brochures.
(Ask the Walk Coordinator for a PDF version of the files if print copies are not yet available.)
2. Take a team photo and write a short article for your local paper! Community papers love stories about
their local residents, especially when community events are highlighted.
3. Ask local groups to support you! Ask for time at your local Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club,
Lions Club or other service organization to talk about why you are participating in a Walk for Apraxia event
and how they can get involved.
4. Share information about the Walk, and your Walk team on local community calendars. Go to your local
newspaper, radio station or news station website to submit the event!

TEAM SWAGEven though walkers get a Walk for Apraxia® T-shirt by registering to
participate, many teams decide to make their own t-shirts, in matching
colors with clever names to wear to the Walk.
Team T-shirts help build enthusiasm for the Walk during the weeks leading
up to the event, and unite a team on the day of the walk. We cannot provide
you with the official Walk for Apraxia logo to use on the team shirts.
Tips on Creating Team T-shirts:
1. Be creative! The more unique your shirt, the more your team will wear
it year-round.
2. Stand out! The best shirts are bright and colorful.
3. Include the name or photo of the person/child for whom your team is walking in your design.
HOST A KICKOFFHold a kickoff party/rally with your team to motivate your walkers and get them excited about participating.
This is also a great way to recruit walkers. Please feel free to contact the CASANA Event & Volunteer Coordinator
for support and ideas.
SOME TIPS:1. Hold it at your workplace:
• Host an informational breakfast, lunch or happy hour.
• Have an ice cream social where employees come to learn about a Walk for Apraxia event
• Incorporate a kickoff party into an already planned meeting
2. Involve your Club & Organization/Friends & Family
• Host a social gathering: BBQ party, block party, etc.
• Incorporate as part of an activity that is already planned for the group
3. If possible tie in a fundraiser to your kicko!

WRAP AROUND EVENTSWhat is a Wrap-Around event? Wraparounds are fundraisers that you can hold to increase awareness and
raise extra funds for the Walk. All expenses for wraparounds are incurred by the fundraiser.
SOME GUIDELINES:
• Events should keep in mind our mission and promote the appropriate image of CASANA.
• CASANA, The Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America, or Apraxia-KIDS
cannot be included in the name of the event. Instead, you can name us as a beneficiary in marketing
and promotional material. (e.g., “Comedy Night, proceeds to benefit CASANA).
• For those wishing to use our name or logo, please submit brochures, flyers, and other materials to
[email protected] at least six weeks before the event so that we can give you the proper approval
for their use. Unauthorized uses are not permitted.
• While we cannot give event volunteers our mailing list, it may be possible for CASANA to process a
mailing on behalf of the event, when deemed appropriate.
• CASANA products may be purchased to sell or give away at the event. Please contact us to discuss
costs. We are unable to provide these free of charge.
• Donors should be advised to make checks payable to CASANA or The Childhood Apraxia of Speech
Association in order to take advantage of tax benefits for charitable donations.
• Be sure to have fun at your event.
• After the event, please send us feedback on how the event turned out, photos, and any other information
that you think can be helpful to us.
• Thank you for your help and support! You will find your volunteer effort very rewarding!

while staying cool in the summer heat.
Garage/Yard SalePlan a garage/yard sale to add to your fundraising efforts.

Restaurant Giveback EventsSome restaurants will work with charities to host an event
where a percent of the proceeds are donated. Some restaurants
that do this include Chipotle and Ruby Tuesday. Contact the local
restaurant to pick the date and work with them to promote it
locally. Contact CASANA to obtain a copy of our tax identification
information which is needed for them to issue the check.

an e-mail from your headquarters that includes a link for them to register
on your team.
Involve your company/employer (involve your boss and coworkers, take
advantage of matching gifts if available).
Encourage all team members to be active fundraisers.
E-mail or call team members regularly to answer questions and check on
their progress
Thank everyone who has made a donation to your team
