IntroductionAmerican Indian Nations in the western United States continue to face significant economic and social issues:• Self-Sufficient Food Production• Unemployment/Emmigration • Availability of Potable Water• Effluent Treatment• Limited or no access to domestic power

Tribal governments have identified self-sufficient food production as a primary goal in establishing and maintaining sovereignty. Agriculture land use on reservations is declining.

Significant Issues• Increasing numbers of trial members are leaving the reservations to live where

better jobs are available.• Potable water is limited on many reservations, with many Indians using water

from tanks that are filled from fill stations remote from their home sites. • Outhouses or leach fields are used for domestic sewage; trash is disposed

adjacent to homes with varying levels of recycling and composting. • Leach fields are often used for commercial developments, expansion of leach

fields may be limited and prevent future facility growth.• Home sites are typically remote and have no or expensive access to electric

power supply sources.

News from the Supply Chain

your.asda.com/sustainability

Excerpted from the 2014 Sustainability Report:

1. Our research has found that only 5% of our fresh produce will NOT be affected by changes in the climate.

2. No longer is climate change a subject just for environmentalists, it is already having an impact on businesses around the world and across all sectors. In fact, in 2011 economic and insured losses caused by natural catastrophes reached an all time high, with extreme weather events accounting for over 90% of all recorded disasters.

A Change in the Supply Chain

The Shifting Paradigm• Costco has surpassed Whole Foods this year as the top

seller of organic food in the US. • Costco expects to sell $4 billion in organic food this year.• That number eclipses the $3.6 billion in organic food that

BMO analysts estimate Whole Foods sells annually.

Futureproofing Through IntegrationWaterWater is the key to today and the future, adding a processing component to new and expanding developments has several advantages:• Maximize water efficiencies and

availability• Allow for future development and

expansion through modular water treatment capabilities• Guaranteed water quality• Planned water source maximization

and care

FoodThe global food chain is at high risk of failure due to water availability and climate change. Local production being added to new and expanding developments has several advantages:• Development of an agriculture based

revenue stream• Farm to table for local restaurant and

catering operations• Local supply of high value produce for

local markets• Job creation in local agriculture

Page 20: Casa for Southwest Indian Nations

Financial ArgumentsCost• Upfront cost is higher• Long term operating cost is lower• Labor cost is marginally higher• Expansion costs need to be considered

as they occur

Benefit• Expandable wastewater treatment to

maximize future development• Farm to table food providing additional

marketing for restaurant and catering operations• Revenue generation from high value

agriculture and fish production• Job creation from agriculture

component• Greater economic resiliency creates a

greater regional customer base• Food security

Integrated Infrastructure TechnologiesWaterIntegrated water processing assures quality, efficiency, beneficial reuse and source flexibility providing:• Wastewater treatment output and

Compliance• Ability to use sources with uncertain

quality w/flexibility to adjust to changes caused by outside influences

• Reduction of raw resource requirements and high quality aquifer recharge

• Ensured environmental compliance and improvement

• Designs that meet or exceed existing standards

PowerIntegrated power strategies assure continuous power for the facility reduced reliance on existing resources. Focus on renewable energy sources provides:• Lower costs for energy generation• Dedicated, secure power for facility• Lower environmental impact• Potential to use wastewater sludge and

local food waste and grease to create power and high value soil amendments for reforestation efforts

Water ManagementSmall Footprint Water Efficiency

• Water source can be pre-utilized, CASA projects are designed to optimize secondary usage.• All water used in the CASA project will

have secondary and tertiary usage before final processing and release for recharge where applicable.• Aquaponic systems recirculate and

reuse water in the food production cycle.• Greenhouses capture evaporative

moisture and return it for reuse.• Systems can be building integrated to

maximize available land05/01/2023 © Copyright, Clean Technology Trade Alliance 2014. All rights reserved. 24

Greenhouse EfficienciesBIOMIMICRY CLIMATE CONTROL • Both the outer and inner skin of the building

envelope use a transparent structural fabric. While the outer skin provides a protective seal, the inner skin is an active thermal energy exchanger that is temperature regulated.

• A continuous film of water, known as the Dynamic Liquid Curtain, is run inside the south facing cavity over the inner skin.

WATER OPTIMIZATION• The amount of water a plant transpires is

staggering, with traditional greenhouses, this valuable water is vented into the air. With the evolved HydroHaus design, this pure water, produced by plants, is collected and reused.

CASA AgricultureCombining technologies to achieve the maximum output of high value organic produce requires utilizing the best technologies in the right combination in a given environment. Part of the analysis and planning phase of a CASA engagement is to determine the right agricultural approach for each facility.

ConclusionThe CASA project will provide:Agriculture products using reduced volumes of

water with vastly increased efficiencyWater and power for the project and

potentially for local communitiesFood securityAgriculture, power, water and related jobsWastewater treatment and reuse processes

that maximize water returning into the natural systems

Economic growth through agriculture, power, water – with direct, indirect and induced job creation

A working model for other distressed areas/communities that pays for itself
