OUR GIFT TO YOU: TODAY ALL BOOKS ARE -50% – BECAUSE AT CASA CARITAS THERE IS A PERSON WHO LOVES YOU!

The Casa Caritas Home for Physically and mentally Handicapped Persons is a non-profit and non-racial organization caring for persons mentally and physically impaired who are unable to be trained or educated. The Home has been rendering this service to the community since 1973 caring with compassion and dedication.

CEO:Adri Kruger

Controlling Body - TrusteesThe centre is administrated by a Controlling Body, which consists of Professional people from the community.

Our Ambassadors:Well-known singer Mr Rudi Muller & well-known retired TV presenter Mr Riaan Cruywagen.

People who have visited us always speak of the love, compassion and the bond, which exists in the centre between the residents and staff. Casa Caritas is a privately owned home. Residents over the age of 18 receive a small Disability Grant from Government which contributes about twenty percent towards the monthly fees required to sustain a resident.

The Board and Management of Casa Caritas have therefore embarked on and committed themselves to develop programs that ensure a long term sustainable income. The fact that twenty percent of the residents are partly subsidized makes the implementation of a sustainable program even more important. Fifty percent of the budgeted income is raised through donations and sponsors.

PLEASE VISIT US AND SEE THE COMPASSION OF OUR STAFF MEMBERS – OUR CHILDREN ARE BLESSED BEYOND WORDS!

We have 45 Full-time residents and 4 day care. Ages of the residents vary between 8 and 39 years of age. 97% of the residents are severely mentally and physically handicapped and all of them require fulltime attendance to their needs 24 hours per day – having to be fed, changed and in most cases moved about. They are unable to render any assistance to themselves.

Each one has their own personality, likes and dislikes in spite of their shortcomings. Marius Bekker is a good example, he refuses to take his medication if he cannot see a "nana" (Lollipop) to be given afterwards. Ilonka loves receiving new clothes and then refuses to take them off once she has fitted it! She also loves dolls and being a "mommy"!!

4% of the residents go home for weekends on a regular basis, either each weekend or every 2nd weekend. Some of them receive visits from their parents at the centre. We have a lounge fitted out with seating and furniture making it close to home, where they can spend time with their loved ones in a private environment. The only real home some of them know is Casa Caritas, where they are cared for with compassion and love.

Most people are uneasy to come face to face with a severely handicapped person but we look past their shortcomings and see them as 'normal' each in their own way.

The average life expectancy of a mentally and physically disabled person is normally about 16 years of age however as a result of outstanding care given to the residents a large percentage of them are older than sixteen. Our oldest resident passed on at 43 years old.

We invite the public to visit our home… this is a reality and should be seen, not just ignored.

YOU HAVE ONLY LIVED LIFE ONCE YOU HAVE GIVEN TO SOMEONE WHO WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO REPAY YOU.

Casa Caritas - meaning "Home of Compassion".

Francois Keulder was a normal child until he was 3 years old when he became severely ill. Due to an incorrect diagnosis he became a handicapped person. In 1971 his parents realized that Francois had to be placed in a special institution, as he would not have been able to function in a normal school. Nowhere in the Kempton Park area was there such an institution or any suitable facilities. A committee was established and as a result thereof the 'Committee for Handicapped People' was established.

In 1973 Casa Caritas was officially opened in Maxwell Street Kempton Park. At that stage there were only 8-day residents. However there was also a large demand for permanent residential facilities.

Due to the insistence of the Department of Education the residents at Casa Caritas were divided into two groups, those who could be educated and those who could not. The residents who could be educated were relocated to the Con Amore School, which operates under the Gauteng’s Education Department. Those who could not be educated remained residents of Casa Caritas. In November 1975 Casa Caritas started working independently.

The current premises of Casa Caritas at De Villiers Street, Terenure, Kempton Park were opened in November 1985.

Our residents also participate in the day to day activities of the home as in the case of any 'normal' person.

The residents are usually bathed in the morning when they are still fresh and not yet tired and irritable. Some resident's food has to be mashed because they find it difficult to chew. Some enjoy playing outside in the sun. The residents enjoy being taken for a walk by members of the staff or just relaxing outside.

Remedial Therapy.A vital aspect of the centre is to assist in the development of the residents by providing intensive therapy programs, which include physio and stimulation.Spastic muscles or muscles that are taut are some of the problems suffered by the residents. The problem is so severe that in some cases the fingers, knees and wrists are permanently distorted, especially in cases where residents are admitted at a developed stage. Damage appears on the opposite side of the body to where the brain damage is.The house-mothers who are responsible for the residents are specially trained to undertake the necessary therapy, which is monitored by the visiting physiotherapist. Each residents program is individually planned. Many of the residents have improved in a short period of time. Some have learnt to sit, how to straighten their legs and lift their heads. Continuous therapy is given on a daily basis. It's also obvious that they enjoy these exercises tremendously. Internal physiotherapy training is given to the staff by the Nursing Services Manager. A qualified Physiotherapist visits the centre on a regular basis. Stimulation Balls are used in order to stimulate the back and to prevent the occurrence of spasms. It also enables better blood circulations. A beam is used for balancing and stimulation, for strengthening the legs, arms and back as well as for the promotion of better blood circulations. Painting, building puzzles and putting articles together are the only means of mental stimulation that a small percentage of the residents can participate in.

WE WOULD LIKE TO KEEP YOUR CHANGE. WE LOVE CHANGE. LOTS OF CHANGE BUY STUFF ON OUR WISH LIST.

The home undertakes fundraising projects assisted by the staff and governing body. In the current financial climate this is no easy task and does not generate enough funding to enable us to balance the books. Donations were previously an important source of income but as the economy has weakened, the amounts received in this respect have decreased. It has become increasingly difficult, as numerous charities compete for the dwindling amount of donations.

Money for the salaries of the staff and the maintenance of the building and grounds must be found by the Home itself. Like all other welfare institutions in the country, Casa Caritas, is dependent on the money and compassion of the good Samaritans in society for its survival. Very few parents can afford to pay for more than just the care of their own disabled resident.

We dare not drop our standards of care, because that would defeat the purpose of our existence. We desperately and urgently need the help of everyone who is prepared to contribute, so we can continue with this service to the community.

DonationsAny contribution you can make will be gratefully received however large or small. You might choose to make a once-off donation, or you might be prepared to arrange a regular debit order with your bank.If you would like to make a donation now, please get in touch with us.

LegacyPlease remember us in your will. This is sometimes an easier way to give for those of you who are not in a position to make donations during their lifetime. What a wonderful legacy for your children/grandchildren to remember you by, not to mention how you will have completely changed the lives of people who have absolutely nothing in life.

THE SOLE MESSAGE OF THIS PRESENTATION: WE ARE SEVERELY DISABLED & WE NEED YOUR HELP IN ANY FORM YOU CAN PROVIDE.

The idea of this project was instigated by Riaan Pretorius in the year 2000

Businesses and individuals are invited to "adopt a child" to help alleviate the home's financial burden. Businesses/individuals can 'adopt' residents by donating money on a debit order system to Casa Caritas.

A business or individual may if they wish visit us and choose a specific resident whom they wish to sponsor. We can make available a portfolio of the resident in question.

The cost to support a resident is R7200 ( or $650) per month. The only requirement is that the participants undertake the sponsorship for at least one year.

We urge businesses and members of the community to take part in the drive.

We invite the public to visit our home… this is a reality and should be seen, not just ignored.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DONATE MORE THAN JUST THE PRICE YOU PAY FOR YOUR BOOKS PLEASE TALK TO US NOW!

Stiaan is home for the weekend.

But this is not about Stiaan.  Just is just a short discussion about me being a charity nutcase.  And I guess Stiaan has all to do with it.

I don’t actually remember supporting any charities before Stiaan came along.  The only exception would be buying entries into the St John’s Ambulance competitions where one could win a car.  I always wanted to win a car.

And then came Stiaan.  And things changed.  And I started looking differently at charities.  Stiaan now lives in a home for disabled, an institution needing lots of money every year in charity donations.

Since Stiaan came along our family supported all kinds of charities in different forms.  We have done the walks, got the T-shirts.  All for various causes.  Diabetes, breast cancer, save this monkey, save that bird.  Name it.  We’ve been running collection efforts like businesses, not always very successful but we always gave it our best shot.  We still do.  Only difference is that we now concentrate our efforts on the home where Stiaan lives.  There is only so much money that can go around, and we need to prioritise.  Casa Caritas is the place where Stiaan will live until the end of his life and that is why Casa Caritas is so important to us.  That institution needs to survive so our kid can survive when we are no longer there to take care of him.

Now, in the case of Casa Caritas you may ask:  Why do they need charity if the parents pay fees every month?  Yes, the parents pay every month.  Our bill for Stiaan easily runs over R5400.00 a month.  For some people this amount is pocket change, for others it is a LOT!  Then there are the “weggooi-kindertjies” as Irma refer to, the ones she every year at the Christmas party volunteer to buy a Christmas gift for if someone else haven’t done so already, the ones where the parents simply dropped them at Casa Caritas and never came back.  Some of these kids were lucky and were “adopted” by biker-clubs and some of their needs attended to by these people with hearts of gold.  Yes, the same bikers whom are shouted at and screamed at all the time by some cagers, the same bikers whom so regularly stop at Casa Caritas to drop their donations, the same bikers whom are so easily treated as the scum of society.  But let’s leave the bikers for now.  Discussion for another day.  The point is, the parents can’t afford to pay for everything.

I once read a book written by a young lady whom mobilized millions of kids (and adults) with her charity efforts, and collected millions of dollars.  She still does.  In the book she makes it clear: You give, you get.  But very few people will be happy with just a “Thank you”. They want more in return for their donation.

All good and well.  Many charities can get beneficiaries to make some craft work as a

gift, or sing a song to the donors, or even host a complete craft exhibition or concert, but how do you get 50 severely disabled persons, of whom most are on nappies or can’t feed or dress themselves, and I actually ran out of word here because I honestly can’t describe these kids.  Better you go out there and see for yourselves.  How do you get these 50 severely disabled persons to say “thank you”?

Easy.  Besides the "Thank you”, you also give a "Because of you" to the donor!

• Because of you, I have a home to live in.• Because of you, I have somebody on hand 24 hours a day to change my nappy.• Because of you, we can employ qualified staff at a ratio of one staff member per

resident, so we can have the best care ever.• Because of you, we can afford to employ managers, administrators and supports

staff whom devote their time to us.• Because of you, we have people sitting in on management meetings, looking at

our budgets and doing their best to make everything work.• Because of you, we have several donors, like you, with no ties to Casa Caritas,

who will go out of their way to help use survive.• Because of you, we have enough money to pay our enormous water and

electricity bill every month.• Because of you, we have at least three meals every day, and some snacks in

between!• Because of you, I had a warm bath this morning.• Because of you, I slept in a warm bed last night.• Because of you, we have a generator for those days when the municipal

electricity is down.• Because of you, our clothes get washed every day, and fixed if needed.• Because of you, we have alarm systems and security gates to keep us safe when

we sleep.• Because of you, we have working television sets to keep our little minds

entertained.• Because of you, we have a vehicle so we can be taken to a doctor should we

become seriously ill.• Because of you, …

Because of you, Stiaan, I learned to give.  I also learned that the more you give, the more you get.  I also learned that you don’t necessarily get back in the same quantities than what you gave, you always get back more.  I also learned that you don’t always get back when you give, you sometimes have to wait for the return favour.  Thank you, Stiaan, for giving so much…

Greetings.

BECAUSE OF YOU
