Chamber OrchestraThe best string players at Carson come together for Chamber Orchestra to play AWESOME music! Chorus – 8th GradeThe main objective of 8th grade chorus is to develop healthy vocal technique and provide each student a positive and successful choral experience. Through the use of the national and state standards for music education, each student will be given a comprehensive choral education in eighth grade that will prepare them for further musical study at the high school level.

CMS CheerleadingHERE WE GO! BLACK & GOLD! Let's Go TIGERS! Cheerleaders cheer at every home CMS football game as well as girls and boys home basketball games. We perform dances, cheers, and chants to promote crowd participation at games. Duquesne English FestivalSponsored by the Western Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English, the English Festival is a team reading competition based on a required list of six titles chosen by the council. It is designed to promote reading and communicate to students the value of literature in the enrichment of their lives. Students are members of teams, so it is essential to honor team commitments and duties. For additional information visit the WPCTE English Festival website.

Grades: 7th and 8th grade students who enjoy reading and competing.When: In the fall, students sign up, form teams (3-5 students per team), and have the option of ordering the required books through the library. Teams meet monthly during lunch periods to discuss books and practice for the competition. Daily lunch practices are often held during the weeks leading up to the competition, which usually takes place in May. FCS ClubThe Food, Craft, and Sewing club allows students opportunities to explore FCS concepts during activity periods. Past projects have included creating no sew blankets, cookie decorating, beaded key-chains, and many, many more!!

GOLD - Girls Only Leadership Development

G.O.L.D. is an annual event in the North Allegheny School District that is offered exclusively to 8th grade girls. G.O.L.D. stands for Girls Only Leadership Development program. The program is designed to help girls gain the leadership skills needed to succeed in high school and beyond. High school facilitators lead the evening and aid in preparing the 8th grade girls for a more seamless transition to high school. It is a wonderful chance for 8th grade girls to meet new friends from all three of the middle schools!

Interscholastic BaseballThis spring sport is part of the W.P.I.A.L. with a twenty game schedule. There are tryouts in March and we play other schools throughout the spring. We coach and teach the fundamentals of the game.Grades: 7 and 8When: The season goes from March to the middle of May. There are OPTIONAL workouts prior to the beginning of the season. Boys BasketballBoy's basketball is an interscholastic athletic program with competition between other middle schools in the WPIAL during the winter months. The fundamentals necessary for playing at the varsity level are taught, with emphasis on teamwork and developing a winning attitude. The team plays a twenty-four game schedule and also enters several tournaments.Grades: 7 and 8When: primarily in the CMS gym; The season goes from mid November to mid February. Interscholastic Girls

BasketballGirl's basketball is an interscholastic athletic program with competition between other middle schools in the WPIAL during the winter months. CMS has 7th and 8th grade teams. Girls receive instruction in basketball fundamentals and game situations. There will be approximately 20 games played each season. Interscholastic

Cross CountryCross country at the middle school level is a sport in which athletes compete in a race over a course that can range from 1.5 to 2 miles. Boys and girls compete separately. Everyone who participates in practice participates in the meets. Throughout the year we typically run in 7-9 dual meets and 3 invitational meets with sometimes up to 35 teams. North Allegheny runs all three middle schools together as one. We have a tradition of excellence in this sport that is exceeded by no other, and we welcome anyone interested to join us and give it a shot.Grades: 7 and 8When: Generally the 2nd week of August to the 2nd week of October. Interscholastic Girls LacrosseGirls from all three middle schools comprise two middle school teams based on experience and ability. No prior lacrosse experience is necessary although it is beneficial. Girls will take part in practices 4-5 days/week as well as scheduled games against other school districts.

Interscholastic Girls SoccerThere are two middle schools teams, one for each grade: a 7th grade team and an 8th grade team. The teams are comprised of girls from all three middle schools: CMS, IMS, and MMS. The girls play roughly 20 games a season against schools within area. The home field, where both practices and home games are held, is located at MMS.

Interscholastic SoftballSlow-pitch softball is a fall sport that provides students the opportunity to represent their school while competing against other Western Pennsylvania school districts. Academics, hard work, teamwork, and determination are areas of emphasis as these young ladies participate in what is truly a life-long activity.

Interscholastic Track and FieldStudents as a member of a team, individually and collectively compete in up to 3 of the following areas: Sprinting and distance running (100 meters, 200, 400, 800, 1600), Relays (4x100, 4x400, 4x800), Throwing Shot or Discus, Pole vaulting, (100 and 110) Hurdling, and Long, Triple or High Jumps. All technique areas will be taught and practiced. Students will participate in both dual meets and invitationals. Team competition includes six to seven dual meets and three invitationals against other middle schools. No experience necessary. Interscholastic Boys VolleyballBoys can tryout and participate in a volleyball program that has as its objective to teach basic volleyball skills and to develop the team concept. This team plays against other middle school teams in the WPIAL.

Interscholastic Girls VolleyballThe Carson girls are paired up within the district with the 9th grade girls volleyball players to form the Gold teams which compete against other 7th, 8th, and 9th grade teams in the area. The girls volleyball program teaches basic volleyball skills and develops the team concept.

Grades: 7 and 8When: The tryouts for girls spring volleyball are conducted in early February and the season ends in mid-April. The team practices or competes after school every day with an occasional Saturday practice or tournament. Interscholastic WrestlingThe students compete against other schools in the WPIAL in 18 individual weight classes on a weekly basis and in weekend tournaments. The sport tests a student's overall strength, quickness, and endurance. The are no try-outs in order to make the team.

Library AidesLibrary Aides serve Carson Library by helping students find books, shelving returned books, keeping the computer areas clean, delivering materials, working on special projects, and sponsoring library programs. Once you are accepted after an application and interview process being a Library Aide is a two-year commitment. Math CountsBecome a Mathlete! MATHCOUNTS is a national middle school program that promotes math achievement through a series of fun and engaging activities and competitions. You will have an opportunity to work with other students who love math and to learn many concepts that are not taught in school. You will work individually and in groups solving interesting problems and have a chance to participate in fun competitions. Eight students will eventually be selected to participate in the regional MATHCOUNTS competition in February. We also hope to participate in other math competitions this year if possible.

National Academic LeagueNAL is a nationally sponsored academic competition. Schools all over the country compete locally with the same bank of questions. Regional winners then compete with other teams around the country in single-elimination matches that determine a national winner. Students must be well-versed in literature, geography, history, science, mathematics, vocabulary, and current events. The CMS team competes against Ingomar and Marshall Middle Schools, and other local middle schools.

Popcorn and PaperbacksEvery nine weeks, students will read and discuss a book and watch the film version, providing students with the opportunity to compare and contrast both formats of entertainment. Book discussions and movie viewings will be held after school in the library. Popcorn, drinks, and other treats will be served with parent approval (a permission form will be sent home). Students will sign up for both components of the book club ahead of time, and there will be a cap of 30 students. Students will vote on the book/movie pairings. Students should read the book that is up for discussion. In order to be permitted to watch the corresponding movie, students must participate in the book discussion during lunch.
