4 Important Steps

Rear Facing Car Seats (Infant)
• Check label on seat for weight limit– Usually 20 or 22 lbs
• Childs head should be at least one inch below top of seat
Rear Facing Car Seats (Convertible)
• Follow label for rear facing weight– Usually 30-35 lb limit
• Check size of vehicle, not all car seats will fit in all vehicles
• Do not use tethers when rear facing
Facts for Rear Facing
• Ensure seat fits into vehicle
• Child should be wearing no more than ¼ inch fleece when in seat.
• Harness straps should be at or below shoulders
• Harness should be snug (pinch test)
• Harness retainer clip at armpit level
• 80% of base should fit on vehicle seat
• Ensure seat is at correct angle (30-45 degrees-read manual)
• Do not add after market accessories
• Only install one way, belt or latch, not both
• Test installation, pull base at belt path, no more than one inch play.
Forward Facing
• CAN be used after 1 year old
• Check height and weight limit for seat
• Harness slots at or ABOVE the shoulders
• Child should be sitting up straight
• Retainer clip at armpit level
• Harness should be snug (pinch test)
Installation
• Tethers (2000 and newer vehicles)
• Latch (2004 and newer vehicles)
• Find directions for both vehicle and car seat.
• Only use Latch or seatbelt for installation (not both)
• Place seat in car• If rear facing and not
correct angle use noodles or rolled up towel
• When you have the seat installed, kneel on seat then pull tight
• Check seat at belt line should have no more than one inch

• Used car seats– Complete history?– All labels on seat?– Meet current federal
standards?– All parts?– Free of cracks?– Less than 6 years old?
• Car seats and accidents• Replace Unless meets all
of these requirements– No cracks or deformities
can be seen– Vehicle can be driven away
from accident– Door nearest car seat
undamaged– No injuries– Airbags did not deploy
Booster Seat
• After child has outgrown forward facing with harness
• Check weight limit• Recommended
around 4 years of age• Properly places
seatbelt on child
Illinois State Law
• Child under 8 years of age must be restrained per federal guidelines.
• Child over 40lbs may use only lap belt
