This was the simple summary of rounds 8, 9 and 10 of the 2012 Formula 1 Championship story, with the Ferrari driver almost managing 3 perfect drives. Wins in both Valencia and Hockenheim, and second place in Silverstone, placed Fernando Alonso 34 points clear of his nearest rival (Mark Webber) in the championship. As with most stories, there is much more to tell, and Alonso’s competitors have certainly had their ups and downs, along with the odd bumpy ride for the Ferrari man himself!

Formula 1:

Red Hot Alonso!

The European Grand Prix round the harbour streets of Valencia started off like the rest of the season so far, with an extremely competitive field. This was demonstrated through qualifying, with the 2 Ferrari drivers and Michael Schumacher failing to make the final session with their times, and a series of technical issues left Mark Webber down in 19th on the grid. In the sister Red Bull at the hands of Sebastian Vettel however, the biggest surprise was the relatively massive gap of nearly one third of a second between him and second-place man, Lewis Hamilton in final qualifying laps – the first time this year that such a significant gap has appeared between cars in qualifying. This was down to a Red Bull putting together what someone in the paddock referred to as a ‘D-spec’ edition of the RB8 design – it would appear that Adrian Newey and his team of designers at Red Bull had finally unlocked the secret for getting the best out of their 2012 package, involving an airflow tunnel under the exhaust being re-designed giving better aero-dynamic performance to the car.

In the race itself, the main players at the beginning of the race were the pole man, 2nd place man on the grid Lewis Hamilton, Pastor Maldonado in 3rd, Roman Grosjean and Kimi Raikkonen. At the run down to the first corner, the first 2 maintained their positions, but as Pastor and

Kimi tried to battle each other, this allowed Grosjean a relatively easy passage into 3rd place. Further behind, Alonso made up 3 places on the opening lap by getting past Button, Di Resta and Rosberg. The fact that Vettel had opened up a gap of 2 seconds to Hamilton after the first lap further indicated the progress the Red Bull team had made with their developments.

The Valencia street circuit in the past was not renowned for overtaking opportunities, but this didn’t stop Roman Grosjean taking advantage of a Mclaren starting to struggle for grip on lap 10, when he passed Lewis on the turn immediately after the DRS zone. Vettel still had a good pace and was already over 11 seconds in front by the time this happened.

Another key element to Alonso’s progress was down to the fact that when the three drivers immediately ahead of him on the track came in for their pit stops (Kobayashi, Raikkonen and Maldonado). All 3 had problems at their respective pit stops, allowing the Ferrari to gain 3 places when Alonso came in for his trouble-free stop.

Tyre strategies were again integral to how parts of the race shaped up, and due to a mixture of one-stopping and 2-stopping cars being on the same stretch of tarmac

together, a long snake of cars formed on the track, which lead to some frantic looking moves. This inevitably lead to a coming together – Bruno Senna didn’t leave enough room for Kobayashi. This caused Senna to go into a dramatic spin, making him come in for a new front nose section.

A significant development came on lap 26 when Jean-Eric Vergne miss-judged an intimidating move on Heikki Kovalainnen, causing wheels to hit and carbon fibre was left all over the track. This required the safety car to come out, which lead to a number of the teams bringing cars in for their second set of pit stops. Alonso and Hamilton (4th and 3rd at the time) chose to come in, and in almost a repeat of what happened in Malaysia, Alonso was able to jump Hamilton due to another very poor pit-stop by the Mclaren team (this time due to a faulty experimental front jack failing).

With Alonso up to 3rd behind Vettel and Grosjean in the safety car formation, he had yet another opportunity to make ground, which he did with a bold move on Grosjean down the outside of turn 2. It then didn’t take too long for Alonso to be gifted the lead, when we had the unexpected sight of Vettel’s Red Bull going extremely slowly a few laps after the safety car period. His alternator had failed! Unfortunately for Grosjean and his Lotus, they use the same alternator logistic as Red Bull, because Renault supply to both teams, and so Grosjean suffered the same fate as Vettel on lap 40. Throughout the race, everything seemed to fall perfectly for Alonso.

In the last few laps of the race, the icing on the cake for Alonso was Lewis Hamilton’s lack of grip on his final set of tyres, meaning he was no longer a threat to his lead. This also meant he lost a place to Raikkonen, but then worst of all, in an attempt to pass Lewis in turn 12, Maldonado came together with Lewis putting the Mclaren into the wall – Lewis’s race was over.

As a good chunk of the field were trying to make their tyres last on one- and 2-stop strategies, Schumacher and Webber made good ground in the closing stages of the race, by passing a number of their rivals due to being on fresher tyres. With 2 of the cars ahead of them effectively crashing out, it allowed Webber to seal 4th, and significantly Michael Schumacher to achieve his 122nd podium place in his Formula 1 career with 3rd place. Alonso won and Kimi Raikkonen was runner-up. It was the most exciting European Grand Prix ever at Valencia, and the Spanish loved it!

The same could not be said about the Brits at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone. The weather was the worst it had been for the race weekend since the infamous grand prix in 2000. On both occasions, car parking became a major issue, as it did this year on the practice day on the Friday. This led to the organisers making the decision to announce to some 20,000 fans to not come in for the qualifying on the Saturday. This allowed major repairs to be carried out on some of the car parks giving the organisers a better chance to have them all open for the race day on the Sunday.

For the cars and drivers, it meant a heavily rain-affected qualifying, and for poor old Jenson Button, it meant he could only get as far as 18th on the grid. Hamilton also struggled in the conditions, and could only manage 8th. The drivers who coped better with the conditions in qualifying were Alonso, Webber, Vettel, Massa and Raikkonen (1st to 5th on the grid respectively). For both of the Mclaren’s during the race it didn’t get much better, with Hamilton only managing 8th and Jenson just getting to 10th. A miserable race day for the Brits was compounded when Paul Di Resta had to retire on the first lap, after the front wing clipped the right rear tyre of his Force India, causing a blow-out which the car would not recover from.

There was passing throughout the race, especially on the DRS zone of the Wellington Straight – some of which were mighty close. However, when both Maldonado and Perez came out of the pits and onto this section of track on their relatively cold tyres, Madonado completely misjudged where the grip was and slid into the side of Perez, putting the Sauber driver out of the race. For the second race running, Maldonado received penalties from the stewards for his apparent reckless driving.

The main story that developed during the race was the one between the front 2 drivers. At the very start of the race, both swiped across to the opposite side of the grid from where they started, making Alonso’s Ferrari miss the front of Webber’s Red Bull by inches as they moved away from their grid positions.

Apart from a time when Hamilton was leading (due to staying out longer on his opening stint on the harder tyre), Alonso was in the lead for the majority of the race. The crucial factor for the race was that Alonso started on the harder tyre, and left his stint on the softer tyre until the end. Webber already had his stint on the softer tyre out of the way, which allowed Webber an advantage nearing the end of the race, as clearly the harder tyre was the one to be on for better grip. This helped Webber to edge nearer and near to Alonso, and then on lap 48 of 52, Webber used his DRS to run up along side Alonso and dart round the outside of him going from the end of Wellington straight and through into Brooklands corner. This sealed the victory for Webber, with Alonso 2nd and Vettel 3rd. Much to the surprise of the F1 community, literally a couple of days after the British Grand Prix, Mark Webber confirmed he was staying on with the Red Bull squad for the 2013 season, even after admitting that at one stage he had been in talks with Ferrari!

Driver Profile

Alonso wins in Germany

Round 10 was the German Grand Prix, this year was staged at Hochenheim. Things started near enough the same as they did in Silverstone with rain affected practice and qualifying, which again seemed to fall into the hands of Alonso. At the end of the final part of qualifying, Fernando was on the right bit of tarmac at the right time, to give himself the quickest time on a drying track on his intermediate tyres. This was after full wet tyres had been deployed in the second part of qualification, after dry tyres were used at the beginning. Following Alonso this time were Vettel, Webber, Schumacher, Hulkenberg, Maldonado, Button and Hamilton. However, Webber incurred a 5-place grid penalty as he had a gearbox change for the race. So this promoted everyone up to and including Lewis up a place.

The main factor to affect Hamilton’s race was the at the very start, when Felipe Massa managed to lose his front wing in the main straight by running his Ferrari into the back of Toro Rosso. As in the Valencia incident that caused the safety car to come out, there were pieces of carbon fibre everywhere on the entrance to the first corner – however this time no safety car was called, leaving the field to drive through the shards left behind by Massa. This was to the detriment of Hamilton, as he was the only one to suffer with a puncture, effectively ruining his race.

Places were made by quite a few of the drivers during the race as some cars were finding the circuit to be grippier than others. Both

of the Sauber drivers had a good race, and had the best team result. Jenson Button finally managed to put his previous woes behind him, and stormed up to 2nd by passing Hulkenberg, Schumacher and then eventually Vettel, with the help of what was most likely the fastest ever Formula 1 pitstop of around 2.31 seconds. He was helped a few laps earlier when Lewis Hamilton unlapped himself against Vettel, as Lewis at that point still had a quick car underneath him on the new tyre. This infuriated Vettel, and in turn, it also helped Alonso to maintain his lead up front.

The other incident that did not go down well with Vettel and Red Bull, was when Vettel overtook Button, with a few laps remaining in the race. This should have put Vettel into 2nd place. However, Button was advised over his team radio that the manoeuvre was completed with all 4 of Vettel’s tyres off of the track, along the side of the exit to the hairpin. The stewards agreed with Button’s view on things, and subsequently applied a harsh 20-second time penalty to Vettel’s times for the race. This demoted Vettel to 5th, putting him behind Raikkonen and Kobayashi.

The result of these 3 races now means that things are starting to spread out, with 121 points separating the top ten drivers in the championship. With his masterful approach to wet qualifying and racecraft, things are going swimmingly at the moment for Fernando Alonso!

Super Minis OverviewCitroen C1 Hatchback

About the car

The C1 was developed alongside the Peugeot 107

and Toyota Aygo, and like those cars, the C1 has

seen very few complaints about the reliability of its

mechanicals. With glowing reports from owners in

the 2012 JD Power customer satisfaction survey, this

car seems to tick all the boxes for a super mini.

How much?

From €7,690 depending on the model and extras.

Fuel Consumption?

Average fuel consumption of 62.8mpg (70.6mpg for

economical driving).

CO2 Emissions

Emissions are 99g/km.

How does it drive?

The only engine in the C1 is a three-cylinder 1.0-litre

petrol unit, and it’s fine for city life. It will cruise quite

easily on the motorway too. The light steering, slick

gearbox and easy clutch combine to make the urban

jungle easy territory. With a good view out, as well as a

tight turning circle, parking and manoeuvring present

no problems.

Why would I want one?

A year’s motoring won’t cost the earth. All C1s sit in

low insurance groups, and the engine averages

more than 65mpg.

Super Minis Overview

About the carSmart Fortwo owners can park where other drivers wouldn’t even consider, and this is iconic, as you will see them parked horizontally on streets all around town. Standard models come nicely packed with plenty of equipment, but the Passion model adds a panoramic glass roof and satellite-navigation, while the Brabus gets a bodykit, sports suspension and heated leather seats.

How much? From €9,795 depending on the model and extras.

Fuel Consumption?Average Fuel Consumption of 57.6mpg (68.9mpg for economical driving)

CO2 EmissionsEmissions are 86-119g/km.

How does it drive? All Fortwos have a stability control system that helps you keep on the road in tricky conditions. The little Fortwo feels like a go-kart, with steering direct and precise, partially due to a lack of power assistance. As for the power it’s not the best in its class, but this car still has to be amongst the top of the super minis list when looking to buy.

About the carThe Toyota Aygo has a well tuned engine, cute looks and

very low running costs. It’s solidly built, too, and comes

with a five-year manufacturers warranty. Toyota’s record

for mechanical reliability is second to none, making this

car a good all-rounder.

How much? From €8,700 depending on the model and extras.

Fuel Consumption?

Average Fuel Consumption of 62.8 mpg (72.4 mpg for

economical driving)

CO2 EmissionsEmissions are 99g/km.

How does it drive?

There’s a fresh and fun-loving feel to the cabin, and

visibility is very good. Just one engine is available,

a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine with 67bhp,

and considering that the car weighs next to nothing,

67bhp is plenty. The Aygo is nippy around town and

can hold its own on faster roads if you use the gears. A

semi-automatic gearbox with a full auto programme is

optional.

Why would I want one?

Low Insurance, extremely cheap to keep on the road,

and that 5-year warranty all adds up to a nice little

package. All you’ll need to get you from A to B.

LÍNEA DIRECTA REPORTS ON THE NEW FRENCH LEGISLATION ON DRINK DRIVING From July 1st, all French drivers driving on roads in France must carry a breathalyser kit in their cars. The measure, announced by the previous government, was due to take effect four months ago, but the rush to buy the kits has led to supplies being sold out, which has led to a moratorium on the introduction of the devices.

According to the French authorities, the regulation, the first of its kind to be introduced in the European Union, will also affect foreign drivers who drive in France, although they will not be required to have the device installed in their vehicles until November. In addition, breathalysers will also be obligatory in all discotheques and bars which have a licence to open at night.

By implementing this law, the French government hopes to save 500 lives a year, due to the presence of alcohol being detected in almost a third of all fatal accidents occurring in France. In addition to this regulation, the French authorities have approved a packet of measures aimed at reducing the accident rate on roads, which include:

• An increase on the road network in the number of fixed speed cameras to 2,500, which will not be signposted. • The introduction of new generation mobile speed cameras, which allow a travelling police car to measure speed. • All motorists must carry a high-visibility vest and a warning triangle.
