2.EligibilitycheckIf you have a qualifying degree from abroad, you need tomake sure that you are allowed tocarry out a doctoral research project at the LMU. Please hand in all your qualifying degreedocuments(eitherinpersonorviaemail)totheDoctoralOffice.Theseinclude:

3.“Promotionsstudium”AttheLMU,youareabletoenrolasadoctoralcandidate,givingyouaccesstotheusualstudentbenefits.Inordertoenrol,youneedtosubmitaletterofacceptance(Promotionsberechtigung)fromtheDoctoralOffice(Promotionsbüro),statingthatyouareeligibletocarryoutadoctoraldegreeattheMedicalFaculty.

3.3.Ph.D.inMedicalResearchPh.D.candidatesdonothaveachoicewhethertheyenrolattheLMUornot.AllPh.D.candidatesarerequiredtoenrol,oncetheyhavebeensuccessfullyappliedandbeenacceptedintothePh.D.program.YouwillbeissuedaletterofacceptancefromtheMMRSspecificallyforthePh.D.

4. Cumulative dissertations Ifyouareplanningonsubmittingacumulativedissertation,therearesomethingsthatyouneedtobeawareofwhendoingso.Acumulativedissertationconsistsofatleasttwopeer‐reviewedarticlesthathaveeitherbeenpublishedorhavebeenacceptedforpublication.Articlesthathaveonlybeensubmittedarenotacceptedaspartofacumulativedissertation.Further,theselectedjournalsmusthaveasubject‐relatedimpactfactorwithinthetop80%ofjournalspublishedintheresearcharea.Asdoctoralcandidate,youmustbefirstorsoleauthorofatleastoneofthearticles.Thefollowingarticletypescanonlybeusedundercertaincircumstancesandaresubjecttoaby‐casedecisionbytheDoctoralCommittee.

Copieswhich have notbeencertifiedwillnotbeaccepted.AnofficialverificationisnotpossibleattheDoctoralOffice.Upon application, those candidates who did not complete their degree in human or dentalmedicinewithin the area of application of the German Constitutionmust provide proof thattheirdegreeisequivalenttotheGermandegree.

(9)ProofofenrolmentProofofhavingbeenenrolledinhumanordentalmedicinefor2semestersattheLMUMunich(certificateofexmatriculation)orajustifiedrequestforexemptionfromthisrequirement,withevidenceofhavingstudiedhumanordentalmedicineatadifferentuniversity.

(10)Certificateofgoodconduct(Führungszeugnis)Thiscannotbeolderthan8weekswhensubmittedtheapplication.Itisnotrequired,if:

3monthsorlesshavepassedsindexmatriculation(certificateofexmatriculation),or youareemployedinpublicorcivilservice(confirmationbyemployer).

(11)GermanproficiencyConfirmationthatyouareproficientintheGermanlanguage(writtenandspoken),ifGermanisnotyourmothertongue.Aconfirmationbyyoursupervisorissufficient.

(12)DoctoralSupervisionAgreementYou must submit your original copy of the doctoral supervision agreement(Betreuungsvereinbarung), as your acceptance as a doctoral candidate is validated by ahabilitatedmemberoftheMedicalFacultyinthiswrittenagreementonthetopicofyourthesis.

(13)Externalthesis(approvalofexternalinstitution)If yourworkwas conducted at an institutionnot belonging to theMedical Faculty, youmustsubmit the written approval of this institution's head that the thesis may be submitted.Furthermore,thewrittenacceptanceofyouasadoctoralcandidateupondeterminationofthethesis' subject areamust be countersigned by a facultymember (professor or teaching staffeligible as authorised examiners by the Hochschulprüferverordnung). In this case, thesubmittedthesisisrepresentedbythisfacultymembertowardthefaculty.

(15)ExternalstudiesPleasesubmittherespectiveform.

(16)EthicalclearanceBeforecarryingoutstudiesonhumansubjects,thequestionofethicalandlegalinnocuousnessneeds tobe clarified,potentially including theEthicalCommittee. 5.7.Furtherprocedure

5.7.1.AssessmentofthesubmittedthesisOnceyouhavesubmittedtheapplicationforadmissiontothefinaldoctoralexaminationwithallrequired documents, the Doctoral Committeewill appoint the required experts and pass thethesisontothem.

5.7.2.OraldefenceUpon completion of the thesis assessment, the doctoral procedure is continuedwith an oraldefence.TimeandplaceoftheoraldefencearedeterminedbytheDoctoralCommitteeandyouwillbenotifiedatleast7dayspriortothedatebythechairpersonoftheDoctoralCommittee.Theoraldefenceconsistsofanunassistedtalk(nopowerpointpresentations,hand‐outs,etc.)on the subject area of the thesis, which is followed by a question period (§12, ExaminationRegulations).Youmaybegroupedtogether(§12,ExaminationRegulations).

5.8.Completionoftheprocedure

Upon completion of your oral defence, you will receive a copy of your thesis as well as aninformationsheetregardingthefurtherprocedure.DoctoraltheseswhicharenolongerneededbytheDoctoralOfficewillbedestroyed,unlessanobjectionisfiled.Withinaperiodof6monthsaftertheoraldefence,youmusthandinthefollowing:25boundcopiesof thethesis ‐statutorycopies(formatDINA5),ofwhichonecopyhasbeensignedbyyoursupervisor ‐mustbehanded in to theUniversityLibrary(Dissertationsstelle).Titleofthethesisandyournamemustbeonthecoverofthestatutorycopies.Electronic versions of theses can also be submitted. The number of statutory copies is thenreduced to six bound copies. File format anddatamedium are determined by theUniversityLibrary.Yourcurriculumvitaedoesnotneedtobeincludedintheboundorelectronicversionsofthestatutorycopies.



Ofworkthathasbeenpublishedinascientificjournalorinascientificseries,withaminimumcirculationof150copies‐insofarastheyhavebeenacceptedasyourthesis‐youmusthandin6statutorycopies to theUniversityLibrary. In thiscase, theacceptanceof the thesismustbeendorsedonthebackofthereprints'titlepage.

5.9.Doctor'scertificate

Yourdoctor'scertificate isonly issueduponsubmissionof thestatutorycopies(including thecopysignedbythesupervisor)andbereceivedattheDoctoralOfficetheearliest4weeksupondelivery of the statutory copies. Upon request, the certificate can be handed out by yoursupervisor.Youwillalsoreceivealeafletwiththecertificate,givinginformationonhowtogoaboutgovernmentaladministrativeprocedures.

5.10.Doctor'sdegree

Theuseofthetitle"Dr.med."or"Dr.med.dent."isonlyauthoriseduponreceivingyourdoctor'scertificate.



6.Doctoraldegreeinhumanbiology(Dr.rer.biol.hum.)Thedoctoraldegree inhumanbiology isdesigned fordoctoral candidates,whowould like tocarryoutadoctoralprojectattheMedicalFaculty,butdonothaveaqualifyingdegreeinhumanordentalmedicine.Inordertoqualifyforthisdegree,allfuturecandidatesmustabsolveapre‐doctoralexamination,beforetheycanbeadmittedtothedoctoralexamination.

6.1.Application

Thereisnoapplicationprocedureforthisdoctoraldegree.Youdo,however,needtoabsolveapre‐doctoralexam.

6.2.Pre‐doctoralexam

Foreverydoctoralprocedureleadingtoadoctoraldegreeinhumanbiology,candidatesneedtocomplete a pre‐doctoral examination. During this exam, the candidate needs to demonstratehis/herrelationshiptomedicine(§13Paragraph1).

6.2.1.Admissionrequirements

(1)QualifyingdegreeAdmissioncriteriaare that theapplicant can showadiplomaoradiplomaequivalentdegree(i.e.Master’s)basedonstudiescarriedoutatauniversitywithintheareaofapplicationoftheGermanconstitution

or has a certificate of having passed the veterinary examination, the first state legalexamination, the first state examination for food chemists or the pharmaceuticalexamination(§2,paragraph1,number12)

orhasadiplomaoraMaster’sdegreeinarelevantsubjectfromatechnicalcollegewithafinalgradeof„verygood“=1.5(§2,paragraph1,number15).

Candidateswhodidnotearntheirdiploma,Master’sdegreeorcarryoutthestateexaminationin the area of application of theGerman constitution,must additionally prove that theyhavepassed equivalent examinations (§ 2, paragraph 2). The doctoral committee decideswhetherthisexaminationisequivalenttotherespectivedegreeobtainedwithintheareaofapplicationoftheGermanconstitution(§2paragraph2).

(2)ScientificworkenvironmentFurthermore, the candidate must provide confirmation of having worked at a scientific orclinicalinstitutionattheMedicalFacultyfora2‐yearperiod,undersupervisionofahabilitatedmember (§ 2, paragraph 1, number 13). When applying for admission to the pre‐doctoralexamination,thecandidatemustalreadyhavestartedworkingattheinstitution.Whenapplying



foradmissiontothefinaldoctoralexamination–aftersuccessfulcompletionofthepre‐doctoralexamination – the 2‐year period ofworking at an institution of theMedical Facultymust becompleted.TeachinghospitalsdonotbelongtothescientificorclinicalinstitutionsoftheMedicalFaculty.

(3)MinimumrequiredgradeTheDoctoralCommitteechecksifthecandidatemeetstheminimumrequiredgrade.

6.2.2.Applicationprocedureforthepre‐doctoralexaminationThe application for admission to the pre‐doctoral examination must include the followingdocuments:

6.2.3.Furtherprocedureforthepre‐doctoralexam

(1)Appointmentofmainandco‐examinersThedoctoralcommitteeappointsthemainexaminerandtwoco‐examiners(§13,paragraph1).

(2)Examination/ExaminationtopicsThepre‐doctoral examination takesplace asbeforeapanelof examiners.Theexaminerswillinformthecandidateonthetopicsoftheexaminationatleast8weeksbeforetheexamination.(§13,paragraph2).Concerning graduates from technical colleges with a diploma, the subjects chosen by theapplicant(§13,paragraph5)aswellastheoccupationaccordingto§2,paragraph1,number13, should be consideredwhendetermining the topics of the predoctoral examination (§ 13,paragraph3).Wheninvitedtotheexamination,thecandidateisinformedthathe/shecaninquireaboutthetopicsthelatest8weeksbeforecommencementoftheexamination.Thethreeexaminersdecideonwhetherthecandidatecanbeadmittedtothedoctoralprocedureimmediatelyafterthepre‐doctoralexamination(§13paragraph3).



6.2.Supervision

Supervisionofthedoctoralprojectcanbecarriedoutbyahabilitatedsupervisor.Onceyouhaveyourproject anda supervisor, youneed to registeryourprojectwith theDoctoralOfficeandfinal acceptance as a doctoral candidate at the faculty occurs upon mutual signing of theDoctoralSupervisionAgreement.

7.Doctoraldegreeinlifesciences(Dr.rer.nat.)Thedoctoraldegree in life sciences (Dr. rer. nat.) is fordoctoral candidateswith aqualifyingdegree in the lifesciences.Youmusthaveachievedagrade,whichallowsyou tocarryoutadoctoralprojectatoneofthelifesciencefacultiesoftheLMU.

7.1.Supervision

Supervisionofthedoctoralresearchprojectcanonlybecarriedoutbyahabilitatedsupervisor,whohasadoctoraldegreeinthelifesciences.

The Doctoral Committee decides on the acceptance of doctoral candidates and appoints asupervisoraccordingtothecandidate’sproposal(§6).Thedoctoralsupervisionagreementmustbefilledout,datedandsigneduponappointmentofasupervisorbytheDoctoralCommittee,andhandedintotheMedicalFaculty’sDoctoralOffice.Itwillremainthereuntilthecandidateappliesforadmittancetothefinaldoctoralexamination.

7.3.Pre‐doctoralexam

Thestudentswhoareonlyeligibleforadoctorateattherelevantfacultyafterhavingcompletedapre‐doctoralexamination,cancompletethepre‐doctoralexaminationaccordingtoeithertheexaminationregulationsofthisfaculty(§3,paragraph1)ortothoseattheMedicalFaculty(§4).



7.3.1.Applicationforthepre‐doctoralexamInapre‐doctoralexamination,thecandidatemustshowknowledgeandskillswhichwillleadtoasuccessfulcompletionofthedoctorate.For admittance to the pre‐doctoral examination, the candidate must hand in a writtenapplicationtotheDoctoralCommittee,namingamajorandtwominorsubjects.The candidate proposes an examiner for the chosen major and minors to the DoctoralCommittee.Theapplicationmustcontainthefollowingdocuments:

A short curriculum vitae in English or German, giving information on the candidate’seducationandpotentiallyonanoccupationheld;

7.8.1.AssessmentofthesubmittedthesisOncetheapplicationforadmittancetothefinaldoctoralexaminationhasbeenhandedintotheDoctoralOfficewithallnecessarydocuments, thechairpersonof theDoctoralCommitteewillassignthesupervisorwiththefirstexpertevaluationandasecondmemberoftheexaminationcommittee (who must also have a doctoral degree in the natural sciences) with a secondevaluation.Uponreceiptofthesetwoevaluations,thechairpersonoftheDoctoralCommitteewillcirculateboththethesisandtheevaluationsamongstthemembersoftheExaminationCommittee,witharequestforopinions.Thethesisisaccepted,iftheevaluationsandopinionsoftheExaminationCommitteemembersrecommendagradingwith„rite“=3(sufficient)orbetter.TheDoctoralCommitteecanreturnthethesisonceforrevision.

7.8.2.OraldefenceUpon completion of the thesis assessment, the doctoral procedure is continuedwith an oraldefence. Time and place of the oral defence are determined by the doctoral candidate andinforms the Doctoral Office of this. The Doctoral Office sends out the invitations and therequireddocumentsfortheexaminationtothechairpersonoftheexaminationcommitteetwoweekspriortothedateoftheoraldefence.During the oral defence, the candidate gives a 30 minute presentation on the results of thethesis. This is followed by a scientific discussion which is led by the chairperson of theExaminationCommittee.


Within one year after the oral defence, the candidatemust deliver six bound copies and onedigitalcopyofthethesis,aswellastwoformsforthedeliveryofelectronicdissertations,totheHochschulschriftenstelle (Documents Department) of the University Library. File format anddatamediumaredeterminedbytheUniversityLibrary(seehttp://edoc.ub.uni‐muenchen.de).Thecurriculumvitaedoesnotneedtobeincludedintheboundortheelectronicversionsofthestatutorycopies.



Ifthestatutorycopiesarenotdeliveredwithintheperiodprescribed,allrightsacquiredbythesuccessfulcompletionoftheexaminationprocedureexpire.


The doctor’s certificate is only issued upon submission of the statutory copies and can bereceivedfromtheDoctoralOfficetheearliest4weeksupondeliveryofthestatutorycopies.Thesupervisorcanhandout thecertificateuponrequest.Thedoctoral candidatealso receivesanenclosurewith the certificate, giving required information onhow to go about governmentaladministrativeprocedures.

8.Ph.D.inMedicalResearchAttheLMUMunich'sMedicalFaculty,candidatesnowhavetheopportunityofcarryingouta3‐year structured Ph.D. inMedical Research.Objective of the program is a structured researchtraining program which focuses on current content of medical research, in particular ofbiomedical experimental, clinical or translational research, or public health research, inparticularthefieldsofepidemiologyorpublichealth. It isaimedatstudentswithaqualifyingdegreeinmedicine,pharmacy,veterinarymedicine,thelifesciences,publichealthorarelatedfield.In order to give Ph.D. candidates a structured training environment, lecturers from differentfields of theMedical Faculty have come together and defined core areas, inwhich they havecommitted themselves to the framework (recruitment, supervision, qualification andexamination),definedinthePh.D.'sExaminationRegulations.Thisinvolvesthatathematiccorearea offers respective courses (workshops, seminars, etc.) collectively. If needed andappropriate, Ph.D. candidates from other research areas are allowed to take part in thesecourses,therebycreatingnetworksandsynergies.The concept of individual Ph.D. projects in the different research areas, coupled with astructuredandpartlyintegrativetrainingprogramhasprovedsuccessfuloverthepastyears.Candidates will receive a Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) upon successful completion of theprogram.

8.1.ApplicationandselectionprocessThePh.D.MedicalResearchhasanapplicationandselectionprocedure.Formoreinformationon theprocess and applicationdeadlines, please see the respective researcharea,where youwouldliketocarryoutaPh.D.(corearea,researchtraininggroups,individualPh.D.).Once you have been selected for the Ph.D. in Medical Research, you will receive a letter ofacceptancefromtheMunichMedicalResearchSchool.Withthisletter,youmustthenenrollatthe LMU as a doctoral candidate. Information on the enrolment process canbe found on theMMRSwebsiteunder“Downloads”.

8.2.Supervision

8.2.1.SupervisorThe doctoral candidate is supervised by an authorized person (supervisor), who can be amemberoftheMedicalFaculty,orfromanotherfacultyattheLMUorcanbelongtoanexternalinstitution.



8.2.2.ThesisAdvisoryCommitteeDuring the first semester of the doctoral research project, each Ph.D. candidatemust form aThesisAdvisoryCommittee(TAC).TheTACiscomprisedofthesupervisor,asecondrevieweranda thirdperson.Allareasof theresearchprojectshouldbeappropriatelycovered.At leasttwomembersoftheTACmustbemembersoftheLMU'sMedicalFaculty.

8.3.DurationThe Ph.D. has a minimum duration of 6 and a maximum of 10 semesters. This means thatcandidatescanhand in their thesis theveryearliestat thebeginningof their6th semester. Inrespect to the maximum duration, candidates must have submitted their thesis and havecompletedtheiroraldefencebytheendofthe10thsemester.

8.4.Targetagreementandamendment

8.4.1.TargetagreementTogetherwithhis/herTAC,thePh.D.candidatesignsatargetagreement,whichnotonlyreflectsthe supervision, but also gives information on the planned research project, milestones,curricular elements, etc. The target agreement is signed by all TAC members and the Ph.D.candidate.Itmustbehandedinbytheendofthesecondsemestertheverylatest,otherwisethePh.D.candidatewillbeexmatriculatedfromtheprogram.

8.4.2.TargetamendmentThePh.D.candidateshouldmeetwithhis/herTACinregularintervalsanddiscusstheprogressof thePh.D. project and todeterminewhether thePh.D. candidate is adhering to theoriginaltargetagreement.Thesemeetings shouldbeduring the3rdand5th semester thevery latest.Shouldtheoutcomeofthesemeetingsbeinaccordancewiththetargetagreement,theresearchprojectcancarryonasplanned.Iftherearedifferencestotheoriginaltargetagreement,atargetamendmentneeds toberecorded. If theTACdetermines thatcertainelementshavenotbeenfulfilledbythecandidate, itcandecidethattheseneedtoberepeated.Iftheelementsarenotfulfilledwithinaretry,theTACissafetoassumethatthecandidatewillnotbeabletofulfiltheotherrequirements fromthetargetagreement forcompletionof thedissertationandtheoraldefence. In this case, the TAC is terminated, the Ph.D. project is ended and the student isexmatriculatedfromtheprogram.

8.9.1.AssessmentofthesubmittedthesisOnce the application for admission to the oral defence has been submittedwith all requireddocuments,thechairpersonoftheDoctoralCommitteeasksthesupervisorandsecondreviewertosubmittheirexpertopinions.Uponsubmissionoftheseexpertopinions, thedissertationandopinionsareforwardedtothetwo othermembers of the ExaminationCommittee, aswell as to theDoctoral Committee forcomment.



The thesis is accepted if the expert opinions and comments all grade the thesis with a"sufficient"(4.0)orbetter.ThethesiscanbereturnedtothePh.D.candidateonceforrevision.TherevisedthesismustbesubmittedtotheDoctoralOfficewithinoneyearforre‐evaluation.

8.9.2.OraldefenceUpon acceptance of the thesis the Ph.D. candidate is admitted to his/her oral defence. 8.10.CompletionoftheprocedureWithin one year after the oral defence, the Ph.D. candidate must submit 6 bound copies(statutory copies), a digital copy and 2 forms for the submission of electronic theses to theuniversitylibrary.Fileformatanddatamediumaredeterminedbytheuniversitylibrary.YourCVdoesnotneedtobeincludedintheboundorelectronicversionsofthestatutorycopies.If thestatutorycopiesarenotsubmittedwithin theyear,all rightsobtainedby thesuccessfulcompletionofthethesisandtheoraldefencearenullandvoid.



8.11.Doctor'sCertificate,Doctor'sDegreeandTranscriptofRecordsTheDoctor'sDegree("Promotionsurkunde")isissueduponsuccessfulcompletionoftheoraldefenceandsubmissionofthestatutorycopies.Itcontainsthedateoftheoraldefence.Simultaneously,theDoctor'sCertificate("Promotionszeugnis")isissued.Itcontainsthesamedate at the Degree, as well as the title of the thesis, the individual grades (thesis and oraldefence)andtheoverallfinalgrade.A transcript of records is also issued, which contains all completed courses and theirrespectiveexams,ECTSandgrades(whereapplicable).Withinaperiodspecifiedbythecoordinator,thePh.D.candidatecanapplyforinsightintotheexamination records (expert opinions, comments, record of proceedings).Fullexaminationrecordsarekeptforatleast5years.
