Coal And Oil Outlook

(uy It. S. Manner). Since my absence from WhitoOaks for forty-tw- o months, I findthat our Whito Oaks coal ia be-in- sr

Boutrlit for. Bofore I lefthere for Mississippi I tapped thetfecond vein of coal on my proper-ty and since I loft. Sam Wellshas opened up the top vein inthree places and now we haveplenty of coal in sight and it willnot bo long until I can supplycoal to all that come for it

The Lincoln Light and PoverCompany operates the ElectricLight and Power Plant near thecorner of my fence and minesfrom 80 acres that join moon thuHouth. They are supplying thePlant and selling coal to thetrade.

Mr. Alex. Bennett is sinkingan incline shaft on coal propertywest of me near town on Mrs.Barber's holdings.

Our White Oaks coal has thesame Government classificationas the Cerrillos comí, which is thehighest of any produced in NewMexico. All coal from the WhiteOakR field makes n very goodgrade of coke as a shipment of800 lbs was shipped to a cokeconcern in Alabama which wastested out by a large iron Fur-nace, with good results.

The prospect for the develop-ment of oil in Lincoln county isgrowing every day. The neces-sity for this development is alsogrowing rapidly.

Wo who have always gone tothe grocery for our coal oil andthe few of us who have boughtgasoline for automobiles or gasengines havo most usually beenable to get what we needed, butin many states in 11)18 the sup-ply was so low that fuel adminis-tration ordered automobile own-ers to cease to operate their carson Sundays, east of tho Missis-sippi river, and this was simplyto conserve the supply of oil andgasoline, then almost exhausted.

Practically the same conditionDXists today. There is barely afour months' supply on handnow.

There are moro largo corporations prospecting for oil thanover bofore. There is moro thanone reason for this activity; First,of course, is to make money. Thesecond, is to Save money. Tosave money in this sense is tokeep the refineries going. Ithikes a lot of money to build alarge refinery. Tho ieople whom1 Have had a chance to be

with, own and operateune reflnory and are now plan-ning another one to cost severalmillions of dollars.

It takes a lot of money to keepn ulant of this kind running, hence the continued search formoro oil. Sinco April 1918, eightpew nil fields have been broughtIn. The law of supply and dcmand has been much in evidence;the supply smaller and the

greater. The pricqin crudeoil has increased in the last fewyears from 40c to $3. CO per bar-rel, It is truo that the cost ofproduction has greatly increased, jiut not so much as tho valuo ofcrude oil.

The production of. crude ol hasincreased in the last year 24,000,000 barrels, and every effort willbo modo to make the increasethis year much greater, withEurope facing us with a call foralmost everything we havo 'toBell and our own America withits enormous added use of oil andits products, we aro likely tohave a gasoline famine duringthis coming summer and it behoves all of us to lease our land?or got busy ourselves and drillour own oil well or bo lost in thegame.

One largo oil company has beendrilling for many months northof us on the oil fiold that is trace-

able from points in Torrance,Uuadalupe nnd Lincoln counties, with a diamond pointed drill nndrecently as I understand, hascapped the well and ordered anumber of oil rigs to be distributed along tho El Paso andSouthwestern and Santa Fe railroads, and this io proof that weourselves, must get busy, get n

lino and reap the benefits that isbefore us.

Service- -

THERE fa undoubtedly no public wrvite tht touches directlyindividuals and enters so completely into the social and

commercial life of the people as does telephone service More busi-

ness is transacted over the telephone than there is through face toface conversations. More social activities are planned, more invita-tions sent, more engagements made or cancelled by telephone thanby any other means.

This places a tremendous responsibility upon those charged with theduty of rendering telephone service. Any failure of the service wouldhave a disastrous effect upon both the business and social relations ofa community. A general cessation of the service would cause nation-wide confusion.

Telephone employees realize their responsibility and recognize theirobligation. , It is ttiis loyalty to duty that makes it possible for theTelephone Company to render service even under the most difficultconditions.

Quite generally there are at this time inadsquato facilities causingcongestion and confusion, a condition from which there can be noimmediate relief. Sometimes the elements rage in a mad fury, butmen and women brave the storms that the public may be served.Occasionally a scourge of sickness depletes the ranks, adding to theburden of those who escape, but who perform their more difficulttasks with smiling determination to continue the service.

With such a spirit in the telephone organization, the service will atall times be the best that human effort can produce, in the face ofwhatever adverse circumstances may prevail.
