etrorail’s protection services department is ready to ensure commuter safety and protect assets throughout the region this summer. The department rolled out its festive season safety plan on Friday, 1 December 2017. It will run until

31 January 2018.“The plan is to ensure high visibility of staff and contractors, and

also to arrest any and all criminals who transgress the law within the rail environment,” says Ernest Hendriks, Metrorail Western Cape’s regional security manager.

MANPOWERErnest says 690 Metrorail protection officers and 799 contracted security officers will be deployed to work day and night this festive period.

Patrols will be intensified in several crime hotspots, namely Langa to Lavis, Chris Hani and Kapteinsklip in Area Central; Bellville to Strand and Wellington, and the Muldersvlei Line in Area North; Salt River to Fish Hoek and Heathfield in Area South; and Cape Town to Salt River and Bellville (via Monte Vista Line) in Area iKapa.

“Protection officers will ensure commuter protection throughout the region in joint deployment with the Rapid Rail Police Unit and other law enforcement agencies.

TAKE CARERobberies, assault, vandalism, train surfing and commuter related incidents and injuries due to illegal railway crossing often occur during the festive season. Ernest urges commuters to help prevent crimes by not attracting criminals through negligent behaviour.

“We plead with commuters to not display their cellphones, jewellery and other valuables during their commute. Commuters must refrain from consuming illegal substances inside trains, as transgressors will be prosecuted heavily,” he says.

“We also encourage commuters not to travel in empty carriages but to move to those with more commuters.”

GENERAL INTEREST

2017 has been a bumper year and Myline was there to cover it all. Here is a look back on a few highlights from this year. Mandisa Nduli

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY

A FOCUS ON RAIL TOURISMThis year was an unforgettable one for the rail tourism department. In August, it explored opportunities to extend its rail tourism offering further north to include the Cape Winelands. It also hosted 250 tour guides in celebration of International Tourist Guides’ Day, in partnership with Robben Island Museum. In October, the rail tourism team held a guided walk on Cape Town Station and surrounds for the elderly.

CLEANUP CAMPAIGNS AND SPECIAL PROJECTSMetrorail and its stakeholders hosted several cleanup campaigns across the rail network. Among others, cleanup campaigns were held at Harfield Station on 7 May and Rondebosch subway earlier in September. Alien vegetation was also eradicated at Harfield and Kenilworth stations in May.

RESERVE COACHESEach year, the rail operator demonstrates its support of World Wetlands Day which is celebrated on 2 February. This year, Metrorail committed to reducing its environmental impact by using water wisely and supporting the preservation of natural resources. On 18 May, rail tourism staff visited the Fish Hoek Valley Museum to mark International Museum Day.

BUSINESS EXPRESS TURNS 10Metrorail’s business express service celebrated its 10th anniversary in October. Since its introduction, the service has transported over 1.8 million commuters; definitely something worth celebrating.

METRORAIL HEROESCommuters continue to be our number one priority and this year, protection officers did their best to ensure that commuters were safe. In April, train driver Natalie Roman and metro guard Chantel Carstens moved from carriage to carriage to ensure commuters were safe when their train was stranded between stations due to a technical problem. In addition, protection officer, Norman September made 40 arrests in two months.

THREE CHEERS FOR CHANTELLIn February, Myline caught up with Metrorail’s Chantell Lorenzo, who told us what it was like being the first black female to qualify as a track master.

SOCIAL OUTREACHIn April, Metrorail employees donated boxes of blankets, clothing, cooking utensils and toiletries to families affected by the devastating fire in Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay.

Marking Mandela Day in July, employees spent their 67 minutes of goodwill caring for orphans at Ubuntu House Orphanage and donated some baby essentials. On the same day, the rail operator and its stakeholders treated the elderly to some seaside fun on a scenic train ride from Cape Town to Fish Hoek.

MILESTONESMyline published its 200th issue in August. The newspaper was also named as a finalist in the categories of Best Newsletter, and Best Publication with limited resources at the 2017 SA Publication Forum Awards.

PRESIDENT LAUNCHES THE PEOPLE’S TRAINPresident Jacob Zuma launched the new PRASA trains operated by Metrorail in Pretoria in May this year. These trains are part of PRASA’s modernisation programme, which will be implemented over the next 20 years.

METRORAIL’S R9 BILLION BOOSTAs part of Transport Month in October, Minister of Transport Joe Maswanganyi committed R9 billion to improving rail infrastructure in the Western Cape.

FIGHT AGAINST VANDALISM AND CRIMEProtection officers arrested 755 suspects for various crimes, including vandalism and malicious damage to property. In November, Metrorail security guards arrested two suspected arsonists. They were taken into custody at Cape Town Station.

SAFETY CAMPAIGNSSafety campaigns took great priority this year. Metrorail staff conducted 28 campaigns to date and have a few more left for 2017. The various campaigns turned the spotlight on level crossing safety, personal safety and vandalism. Employees used the campaigns as a platform for dialogue with commuters and sharing valuable safety tips.

SPECIAL PROJECTS

The group of disabled commuters soaked up the sun once they arrived at

Fish Hoek Station.

Metrorail marked International Day for People with Disabilities on Sunday, 3 December 2017, with a special train trip for disabled commuters. Jaye-Dee Jansen

group of 40 people with disabilities enjoyed a sunny seaside train trip from Cape Town to Fish Hoek last Sunday, thanks to Metrorail, Cape Town Society

for the Blind and Western Cape Association for Persons with Disabilities.

The special trip happened to coincide with International Day of People with Disabilities on 3 December. Metrorail provided a mobile ramp and customer service support to the physically and visually impaired guests.

The guests took advantage of the perfect weather on the day, interacting with one another and taking part in sessions facilitated by Metrorail.

“The event highlighted the efforts by Metrorail to make the rail service more accessible to the disabled. We also highlighted the efforts by the disabled to get on and off the train,” says Vincent Daniels, public awareness officer for Cape Town Society for the Blind.

SPECIAL NEEDS Many of the guests were first-time commuters. “The primary objective of the day trip was to build and maintain lasting relationships with current and new stakeholders by providing a day trip that catered for their special travel needs and

expectations,” says Daphne Kayster, marketing and promotions manager at Metrorail.

WORKING TOWARDS ACCESSIBLE FACILITIESThe process is driven by PRASA’s corporate office as it affects all of the company’s services (bus, long distance passenger and commuter rail as well as facilities).

Under the auspices of PRASA Group, a universal access policy inclusive of design, norms, standards and guidelines is virtually complete. PRASA’s new trains will take account of special needs of commuters. The policy document includes: • Prioritisation of corridors• Park and ride facilities • Prioritisation of target groups

• Funding for upgrades• Appropriate signage• Security elements• Rolling stock requirements • The development of a training manual

for employees to deal with travellers with special needs.

ASSISTANCE FOR THE DISABLEDAll new trains will have universal access for people with disabilities, including wide access doors and automatic open/close doors. Until these corporate policy interventions are in place, Metrorail maintains a register of users who require special assistance to ensure that station staff assist commuters to travel with dignity.

PRASA is in the process of establishing special needs passenger (SNP) desks at major information centres where literature, accessible information and assistance will be available in future. We encourage commuters with special transport needs to contact their respective station managers to ensure that they receive the necessary assistance.

Commuters with specific requirements can register these at a customer information desk, email [email protected] or call 0800 65 64 63. The City of Cape Town also offers a Dial-a-Ride service; details may be obtained at the same information number.

A

TRAVELLING MADE EASY FOR DISABLED

UNIVERSAL ACCESSIBILITYThe Passenger Rail Agency of South

Africa (PRASA) has prioritised universal accessibility. It acknowledges that the South African rail commuter system is not yet fully accessible. All new assets, facilities and trains will have levels of access as determined by the policy guidelines on universal accessibility.
