Dear Parents and Friends of Carranballac P-9 College

We value your connection to the College, and your engagement is of equal importance to us as that of your children.

Improved educational outcomes are the result of a strong partnership between family members and College staff. We are keen to hear from parents and guardians in as many ways, and using as many mediums as possible.

Last week we distributed a survey to families and I sincerely hope that you take the opportunity to invest some time in responding. We are also asking that you place August 7 in your home calendar for our upcoming Term 3 Parent Forum, 6:30pm - 8pm. You might also like to take the time to think of some pertinent questions and submit them a week before the forum. The format for the forum will be a little different this time around with a mixture of presentation, Question & Answer and then concluding with a cuppa and some pizza. This will create a nice opportunity for staff and families to socialise and get to know each other.

I look forward to seeing many of you on this occasion.

Next term (July 26) we are combining Student Learning Conferences (SLC) with the 2019 Electives showcase. All

Year 7, 8 and 9 SLC’s will be held in the BER building at Boardwalk. This is also an opportunity for families to immerse themselves in a greater understanding of the Year 9 elective opportunities we offer. We wish to extend the invitation to families with students in all Year Levels who are interested in previewing how extensive our elective program is, for our Secondary Students.

Our students and the talents of our staff have been on display this week with ROCK FEST. I have been so proud of the deep learning that has been achieved by our students and the high level planning by our staff – well done everyone. Highlights have been the Rock band performance evening, various sporting activities, Year 7 Ancient Civilizations Expo and much more.

We have been impressed by the calibre of the eight nominees for an election of two new School Council positions created for students in Years 7, 8 or 9. The ballot closes at 4.00pm today and we hope to be able to announce the two successful candidates tomorrow at assembly. Best wishes to all nominees and I look forward to working alongside you into the future.

Tomorrow we have a very special College celebration for our cleaning staff as they hand over the reins to a new cleaning company in ISS. I want to be clear about the circumstances of this change. A change in Government legislation has led to a different cleaning model being implemented for schools in Victoria. As such, our cleaners Haimen and Magda; along with their staff will be sorely missed. They have been loyal, capable, and effective service providers to the College for 17 years. They are ‘members of our community’, ‘supporters of the College’ and if we were able we would have kept them on as our cleaning service providers. We look forward to a wonderful celebration of their service and thank everyone who has been involved in the organisation.

Next week is our final week of Term 2, and will conclude with an early dismissal at 2pm. Thank you for your engagment, connection and participation in the many College events throughout the semester.

Have a wonderful mid year holiday break with your children and we will catch up early next term.

The cold weather has arrived in Point Cook but whatever the weather, the learning continues at Carranballac.

Well done to all our amazing Foundation students. They demonstrated great respect, enthusiasm and responsibility as learners during their recent Wild Action Minibeasts incursion at both campuses. This learning experience provides such authentic contexts for our students and strengthens their reading, writing, speaking and listening work in the classrooms.

Our school values are also shown every day by our other year levels; during their everyday learning activities, through incursions and when out of school on excursions and camps. Other activities where students have strongly demonstrated our school values include:

Our senior Green Gang members. Congratulations to these students who participated in the City of Wyndham Environmental Youth Summit last week. This full day civic event provided a platform for our students to share their work and ideas with like-minded students from schools right across the municipality. Our students thoroughly enjoyed this day and gained so much information, and again grew in confidence. Thank you to Ms Birkenhead who co-ordinated this college excursion.

Well done to our Year 5 and Year 6 students who are generating high quality work in the classroom following their camps. The Venn diagrams being created in the classrooms, comparing life in 1850s to life in 2018 demonstrate depth of learning. Great to see this standard of work.

Our Year 9 electives program continues to reinforce the talent we have in this student cohort. The art work being produced in “Make Your Mark” is commendable, and the work being generated in the “Fashion” is remarkable. We look forward to sharing some work samples later in the year. Our sport

elective “Challenge Yourself” continues to impress with the students rock climbing at Hanging Rock last week – cold but exhilarating!

Well done to our rock bands who performed in the ROCK FEST held in the College Performing Arts Centre this week. We are so proud of our College Choir performing at the Wyndham City Refugee Week Concert on Thursday 21 June. Sensational!

Winter weather means winter uniform. College beanies are available at PSW, as are winter tracksuit pants. We have senior students coming to school in extremely cold conditions, wearing shorts. Another option for warmth is plain navy skins under the shorts. No labels or brand names on the skins please – this is school uniform. A reminder that our uniform states white socks all year.

Our school values are also supported by the School-Wide Positive Behaviour program which promotes positive school behaviour and culture. Our classroom teachers, education support staff and leadership team use a consistent approach to all student interactions which support improved behaviour and performance at school. Positive relationships at school and at home support these values: Inclusiveness, Integrity, Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Hobsons Bay Division Year 7 Girls Netball

On Tuesday 5th June, 2018, three Year 7 girl’s netball teams represented

Carranballac P-9 College in a district competition. The games were held at the Altona Sports Stadium. All the teams tried their best and played really well, especially considering some of the girls had not played netball before. The Jamieson Way team were runners-up, in a very close game to the Williamstown High team. Thank you to the Year 9 Sports Leaders and the Year 8 Leaders who participated by coaching and scoring on the day. A special thank you to Ms Birkinhead who dedicated her time to training the girls throughout the term and gave continual encouragement along the way!

Hobsons Bay Division Year 7 Boys Soccer

Mr Licastro was very impressed with the Year 7 boys who were respectful and supportive of each other throughout all of their matches, held at Paisley Park in Altona. The team represented Carranballac P-9 College proudly. Carranballac placed 5th overall in what was a highly competitive series of games. Congratulations to all of the students who participated and gave their best efforts.

Sporting Schools Programs at Carranballac P-9 College Term 2 2018

During Term 2, Carranballac P-9 College was fortunate to receive Primary and Secondary School grants from the Australian Sports Commission to support the physical education programs offered at the college. The rationale behind the programs was to encourage student engagement and enthusiasm, and maintaining active participation.

BOOK STUDENT LEARNING CONFERENCES

Page 7: CARRANBALLAC P 9 COLLEGE

The focus for each session was on providing ‘inclusive’ opportunities where everyone, regardless of ability, achieved a sense of enjoyment in developing their personal skills.

As our learning goal this term was on developing knowledge of ‘invasive type games, the following year levels participated in the following 4 x weekly coaching sessions:

Year 5 & 6 Boardwalk classes – National Rugby League: ‘Backyard League Program’

Year 5 & 6 Jamieson Way classes – Melbourne Victory: ‘Victory for Schools Football Program’

Year 7 classes – AFL Victoria: AFL 9’s Program

Year 8 Classes – Netball Victoria: Fast 5’s Netball Program

Sport Elective – Hapkido Martial Arts Program

Year 9 students enrolled in the ‘My Body the Machine’ Sport elective enjoyed learning self-defence from Hapkido Instructor Nick Conduit. Mr Conduit taught the students some beginners techniques for self-defence that students and community members face when confronted with real life situations. Through the three week course, students developed their understanding of the skeletal system, nerve locations and types and how pressure points cause and affect involuntary physical reactions.

Students were engaged and participated with enthusiasm and energy, and are to be congratulated for their focus and attention.

Year 3 - 6 Athletics Carnivals

We are looking forward to seeing the enthusiastic levels of participation form our Year 3 -6 students next term when they take part in their Athletics Carnivals.

Boardwalk 19th July

Jamieson Way 24th July

Both Carnivals will be held at the Newport Athletics Track and families are very welcome to come along and support their children and House team.

We would appreciate any Parent Helpers on the day, whether it is for an hour or the whole day - volunteers are appreciated and make the day run smoothly and on time.

If you can spare some time, and have a Working With Children Check please leave your name and contact details at your School Office.

Choir Performance

Our school choir “60 Strong” will perform at Wyndham Community Centre’s Refugee Week Concert on Thursday June 21. As well as singing, the choir will have the opportunity to be involved in the various celebrations and performances that will take place on the day. Performers must return their permission note in order to attend and should wear bright, colourful clothing to school, along with a school jacket or jumper. We will be at the event for most of the school day.

Rock Fest

The Rock Fest battle of the bands competition was on Wednesday. It featured all of our bands and our VET music course students, along with bands

from other schools. The PAC was rocking from 8:45am until 3:00pm! Best of luck to everyone and thanks to Cranbourne Music and our music staff for supporting this initiative.

Family and Boardwalk Concerts

All of our bands and VET courses have had the opportunity to perform to parents, friends and peers

at recent evening and school time concerts in the PAC. These provided a way of ‘reporting’ back to families regarding student progress and showcasing our programs to other students, while offering another opportunity for students to develop their performance skills. Students were quick to self-assess their efforts and respond accordingly if they thought they could do better at the next show, or celebrate when they had fulfilled their own expectations. Performance is a key area of the music curriculum and the programs we offer. We look forward to continuing to showcase our students in the future.

Wakakirri

Monday July 23 is our Wakakirri performance at the Clocktower Centre in Moonee Ponds. A great deal of effort is going into the presentation and the hard work is paying off! It will be a big day of rehearsal, waiting backstage and performance!

• A commitment to run a College Parent Forum in Term 3. Please keep an eye out for the survey that will be sent out to you, your responses will help us ensure this event meets your interests. The Council is currently considering the following matters pending further development:• We had further progress with the online ordering system for parents to place and pay for canteen orders for students electronically. We look to have something to present in the coming months.• Further action has been taken to facilitate the inclusion of two Student Members from Years 7, 8 or 9 to the School Council later this year.• The possibility of acquiring old Trams for installation as a fixture on the school grounds.

I will update on the above matters as they progress. As always, the council welcomes any involvement and input from the community.

SCHOOL COUNCIL REPORTMATT NEILSEN, president

Carranballac P-9 College has sought the assistance from Grill’d in Point Cook to contribute toward a soft-fall surface under one of our playgrounds.

If you head into Grill’d this month, be sure to place your token in the Carranballac P-9 College jar and your support will contribute toward what we hope to be a successful result.

Thank you so much to those people and organisations who continue to support our Carranballac Food Bank. These people do not necessarily want or need recognition however it is important to acknowledge those that help.

Along with staff and parents of the College we are greatly assisted by Semper Dental who have provided food and blankets; Lighthouse Church who have provided food, hygiene products and cleaning products and The Lions Club of Point Cook who have donated bread, frozen products and material items. This assistance means our families have been well supplied of late which is fantastic and we cannot thank you enough.

Through all of this good work, we continue to collect for our families.

Items we need include hygiene products, soap, deodorants, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste and toothbrushes, sanitary items, toilet paper, handy towels, also cleaning products including

laundry powder, spray and wipe type products, dish washing liquid and liquid hand soaps. Always needed of course are snack foods that students can bring to school for snack or lunches and baking staples – butter, flour, baking powder, sugar, eggs and of course canned and dried goods to include in meals.

Thank you so much for your continued generosity. Every donation is valuable and gratefully accepted no matter how large or small.

School uniforms

At Carranballac we assist families with second hand school uniforms so if you have some that are in good condition and are no longer needed, please think of us. Often when school uniforms do come in people have cut off the tag as it has their name on it. Please just cross your name out. Please, please do not cut off the size. It makes it so difficult when looking for a particular size and uniforms.

Our Year 3 and 4 students have been participating in a Wyndham City initiative called the ‘Active Kids Program’ in PE. Over the past 8 weeks, students have been learning about the benefits of physical activity and the five food groups that are represented in the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. As a part of the program, they have been responsible for completing their ‘Active Kids’ passport which gets them to take note of their healthy habits such as the amount of physical activity they are doing and the amount of fruit, vegetables and water they are consuming. The aims of the program are to get the kids physically active, encourage healthy eating habits and give them the opportunity to participate in clinics. Some of these clinics provided included; Momentum Taekwondo and Table Tennis Australia!
