A poem by

Mary Oliver

When the blackberries hang

swollen in the woods, in the brambles

nobody owns, I spend

all day among the high

branches, reaching

my ripped arms, thinking

of nothing, cramming

the black honey of summer

into my mouth; all day my body

accepts what it is. In the dark

creeks that run by there is

this thick paw of my life darting

among

the black bells, the leaves; there is

this happy tongue.

August Birth Month Flower:

The Gladiolus

The gladiolus, or ‘sword lily,’ represents remembrance,

calm, integrity, and infatuation.

Gladiolus indicates that the heart is being “pierced with love.”

Sunday, August 6

Friendship Day is a day to nurture relationships, new and old. It's a really easy and fun day to celebrate.

Start the day by getting in touch with some old friends. Start early. Chances are, your friends know it's Friendship Day. You want to beat them to the punch, and contact them first. Phone calls, emails, Ecards, are great tools. See if you can make plans for lunch with a friend today, or some other day (soon).

Then, catch up to some of your current pals and buddies. Make sure to do some interesting things with them before the day is through. As you go through the day, be ever vigilant to spot an opportunity to make a new friend. Finding new friends today, is a real feather in your cap.

One thing is for certain...... if you put your all into the spirit of Friendship Day, you will

have a great, great day.

Happy Friendship Day to people all over the world!

SUMMER IN GREECE

Greece is mostly known as a destination for

summer holidays and most tourists come to Greece

in summer months to enjoy all the positive features

that Greece has to offer them. In fact, the tourism

season in Greece starts in May and lasts till the

beginning of October, which means that tourists

come as soon as the warm weather starts and leave when the first autumn rains fall.

The warm weather is one of the things that people love in Greece. It is not random

that most tourists in Greece come from countries where the weather is mainly cold,

cloudy and rainy, such as Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, Canada and the U.S.A.

The warm weather brings joy and peace in the people's heart and cheers them up.

They make them see the joyful way of things and when they go back to their

countries, they are more positive than before.

Another characteristic of Greece that tourists love is the Greek beaches. Greece has

many types of beaches, found along the mainland coastline and the Greek islands.

There are small or large beaches, sandy, pebbled or rocky, clean or others with sea

wracks, with a green or a bare surrounding, popular or isolate. However, one thing is

for sure: they all give you this nice familiar feeling of exhaustion combined with

satisfaction, when you lay on the warm sand, after you get tired of swimming. The

most popular resorts in Greece are the Greek islands. The Cyclades islands, in

particular, are known all over the world for its special architecture. They have narrow,

paved alleys and most of their buildings and churches are painted in blue and white,

as a combination of the blue sea and the clear white sky above the Aegean. One of the

most famous village of the Cyclades is Oia. Greece offers visitors a lot of things to do

in summer. Apart from swimming in the beautiful beaches, tourists can also try water

sports, such as sailing and windsurfing, hiking along the charming paths in the Greek

countryside, visiting important historical places or just relax, having a drink in the

many beach bars by the sea. Once you come to Greece, you will discover that this last

habit is the favourite among Greeks and foreigners, as people in Greece love having a

drink at the beach, where they spend many hours of their vacations.

The zoo was founded in 1868, when the Lincoln Park Commissioners were given a gift of a pair of of swans by Central Park's Board of Commissioners in New York City. In 1874, the swans were joined by a bear cub from the Philadelphia Zoo: the first animal purchased for the zoo. The bear became quite adept at escaping from its home and could frequently be found roaming Lincoln Park at night. The first bison ever born in captivity was born in the Lincoln Park Zoo. A new Lion House opened in 1912. It was later renovated and reopened in 1990. The Primate House opened in 1927, and was known for housing a popular gorilla named Bushman (1931–1951), one of the only gorillas in a U. S. zoo at the time. The zoo's great apes were moved to the Lester E. Fisher Great Ape House in 1976, named for the zoo's out-going director, and the original Primate House was later renovated and reopened in 1992 as the Helen Brach Primate House, featuring more naturalistic settings. It was announced in March 2014 that the zoo's Robert R. McCormick Bear Habitat, or "Bear Line", would be torn down and rebuilt with a large and significantly improved habitat for the zoo's lone polar bear, with much more land area for the bears and a behind-the-scenes den for breeding. The new exhibit will also feature a new African penguin habitat, a new species for the zoo from the tropical coasts of Africa, enabling them to stand the zoo's harsh summers as well as its cold winters. This exhibit would also be fully outdoors and equipped for over a doz-en penguins with a behind-the-scenes breeding area. Construction will begin after the opening of Regenstein Macaque Forest in fall 2014, with a 2016 opening set for the new habitat.

Dominion of the theotokos

Activity Happenings ...

July was filled with happy memories for all of us. The nice weather, our special visitors and the outings to various places all contributed to some incredible moment for all of us.

Our 4th of July Social was a fun-filled afternoon. Residents and staff delighted in a tradi-tional 4th of July meal of hamburgers and hot dogs on the patio while wearing the colors of the American flag. A special treat for all was the delicious and colorful cupcakes which was served for dessert.

During the month, we welcomed our visitors from St. Haralambos Philoptochos, St. Nicholas Philoptochos and the Ladies Society of Achladokampos who treated us to Greek Coffee and homemade sweets. Thank you to all and a special thank you to St. Nicholas for the outstanding diples! July’s outings were a great success. Residents went to Twin Lakes where they had their first picnic of the summer. We enjoyed our visit to River’s Casino, although no one won the big pot, so we did all our shopping for the month at Walmart and the Dollar Tree. The residents enjoy going out for lunch and brunch, therefore, we visited Elly’s Pancake House for brunch and Diagostino’s Pizza for lunch; both meals were scrumptious. We also went to Demetri’s Restaurant for lunch where our host, Sam, is always gracious and kind and the food is always delicious. Summer is the time for Greek fests at the various churches in our area. We attended the fest of St. Haralambos in Niles and St. Demetrios in Libertyville and feasted on delicious loukoumades, homemade pastries and other Greek specialties.

During the month we also had a visit from one of our favorite entertainers, Sandy, who charmed our residents with her delightful voice and warm and pleasant personality. Sandy sang old-time favorite songs and our residents danced to the rhythm of her music. Residents always look forward for her visits.

August is around the corner and we have made plans to keep our residents as busy as possible. Some of the outings will include a visit to Lincoln Park Zoo, Golf Mill Shopping Center, St. Demetrios of Chicago’s Greek Fest and Demetri’s Restaurant.

AUGUST 15 The Feast of the Dormition

of Our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary is celebrated on August 15 each year. The Feast commemorates the repose (dormition and in the Greek kimisis) or "falling-asleep" of the Mother of Jesus Christ, our Lord. The Feast also commemorates the translation or assumption into heaven of the body of the Theotokos.

Biblical Story

The Holy Scriptures tell us that when our Lord was dying on the Cross, He saw His mother and His disciple John and said to the Virgin Mary, "Woman, behold your son!" and to John, "Behold your mother!" (John 19:25-27). From that hour, the Apostle took care of the Theotokos in his own home.

Along with the biblical reference in Acts 1:14 that confirms that the Virgin Mary was with the Holy Apostles on the day of Pentecost, the tradition of the Church holds that she remained in the home of the Apostle John in Jerusalem, continuing a ministry in word and deed.

At the time of her death, the disciples of our Lord who were preaching through-out the world returned to Jerusalem to see the Theotokos. Except for the Apostle Thomas, all of them including the Apostle Paul were gathered together at her bedside. At the moment of her death, Jesus Christ himself descended and carried her soul into heaven.

Following her repose, the body of the Theotokos was taken in procession and laid in a tomb near the Garden of Gethsemane. When the Apostle Thomas arrived three days after her repose and desired to see her body, the tomb was found to be empty. The bodily assumption of the Theotokos was confirmed by the message of an angel and by her appearance to the Apostles.
