JAM-ARANA REPORT by Tony Arana

From the PRESIDENT by Bill Seabridge

A huge loss to the Western Swing Society and the Jam room. Jeanette Giasson and all the singing she did for us will be missed.

Our heart pours out to Bobby and the family. Losing the room we jam in wasn’t enough to stop the jam session last month. We just took it outside and had a great time with great music. Until next time, See Ya!

Hello out there. I just sat down to write this when my friend George called to tell me Merle Haggard died today on his 79th birthday. The news

initially put a damper on the day but when I thought of all the great music he left us, a lot of which is played at our Sunday dance, I felt a whole lot better. This great country legend whose sophisticated lyrics seemed to blend well with his easy style will remain the common man's voice for a long time to come. That fedora will be missed but the music remains. Bittersweet is sometimes the norm. And on that note, we should fondly recall some of the great players and doers who helped this organization run for so long but have recently tak-en that trip like Merle; good guys like Jim Braswell, Jay Riley and Chuck Hayes. I hope they are watch-ing from above every 1st Sunday of the month with a tender tear on a smiling face. We were lucky to have had them in our lives for so long. Now back to business. The Society is upgrading the website to include a list and bios of the Hall of Fame in-ductees but the task requires more than a hunt and peck typing skill. So we are looking for some competent typist and computer literate folks who would help with the task. If you are able to lend a hand, please let us know. I heard nothing but compliments about last month's guest band, Bob Woods’ Swampbilly, and this lively band expressed an interest in return-ing. Let's hope they do. That creole spiced with a pinch of zydeco was a perfect recipe for a great afternoon of

Cherishing the memories of Jeanette Mary-Rose Giasson. Born March 28, 1939 Carmichael, California, left

this world, April 13, 2016 Carmi-chael, California Jeannette was born in Maine and with her husband Bobby moved their family of 8 to California in 1973. She is survived by her child-hood sweetheart Bobby Giasson, her 6 brothers as well as her 6 chil-dren, 11grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. Jeannette made everyone happy with her angelic voice. She had the sweetest soul and the biggest heart. She was very much loved and will be dearly missed. Jeanette would often accompany our inductee Bobby with the night shift band on stage. May she con-tinue singing with the Angels.

RIP Merle Haggard Inducted in to Western Swing society in 1984

Country music legend Merle Hag-gard, who was known for hits like "Okie From Muskogee" and "Mama Tried," died on his 79th birthday. The country icon died in Palo Cedro, California, of pneumonia that he had been battling for months. He had kept up an ambi-tious touring schedule, but the

pneumonia in both lungs had forced him to cancel several shows this year. Haggard is survived by his wife, Theresa Ann Lane; their children Jenessa and Ben Haggard, the latter of whom served as lead guitarist in the Strangers for several years; and his children from previous mar-riages, Marty, Noel, Dana and Kelli. Married five times, his second and third wives were stage and recording partners Bonnie Owens and Leona Wil-liams.

HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS It's time again to think about nominations for induc-tion into the Western Swing Society Hall of Fame in October. The closing date for submission of nomi-nations is May 31, 2016. Any member in good standing may make 2 nomina-tions, by either postal or email. An 8 x 10 hard copy photo and a digital jpeg (res. 300 dpi) is required at the time of nomination. The nomination should con-tain sufficient biographical information to enable the committee to evaluate the nominee's qualifications. Nominations must include the names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses (if available) for the nominee and the person submitting them. If the nominee is deceased, please include the name of a person who may be able to accept the award.

Always so great to see so may folks enjoying the day of great dancing, music and friends. Once again a big thank you to all the folks that volunteer to do all the things that make the WSS tick.

Every once in a while somebody like John Bush makes a quiet state-ment. He not only helps run sound and play harmonica with Dry Creek, but he noticed a shortage of microphone cables so he bought 5

cables for us. Thanks John from all of us. Every one of us who has danced or played to country music has been touched by the ‘Great” Merle Hag-gard. He will be missed. One of his great friends and band member for over 40 years is our friend Biff Adam. I know this is a huge loss for him. Prayers go out to Merle’s fami-ly and friends, Co-Editor, Ronnie Elkan

ALBUM REVIEW by Mike Gross

Album & Artist: Paul Schle-singer & his Knights of Texas Swing This wonderful new CD, ten years in the making, includes 15 cuts by Paul Schlesinger and his Knights

of Texas Swing, many of Western Swings brightest stars. They include Paul doing all vocals as well as playing a top class fiddle and rhythm guitar. Ray Tes-mer plays lead guitar and fiddle and Bill Dowdy does rhythm guitar, bass and lead guitar. The steel guitarists are Bud Harger and Hall of Famers Jimmy Grabowske and the late Bill Dessens. The drummers are George Harrison and Jimmy Heap, Jr. Kim Cochran, Jr. plays bass and Greg Rikard plays piano and keyboard. Also on keyboard is Western Swing deceased Hall of Fame legend Clyde Brewer. Guest musicians are Scott Fischer-bass, Justin Dubec- drums and clarinetist Jon-athan Doyle. The album opens from the library of Jimmy Heap and the Melody Masters with You Were Meant to Ruin My Dreams. Others from the Heap band are This Song is Just for You, later becoming a Hank Locklin country memory, Haunted Hungry Heart, covered in the country world by Slim Whitman, Cat'n Around and Ethyl in My Gas Tank. The cajun sound is present on Paul's composition, Say Y Me Tib and pop music on A Little Bit of Heaven, from Wayne Newton. Other cuts include I Guess I'll Just Say I Don't Know, two from Bob Wills, Fred Rose's Hang Y our Head in Shame and Dick Reinhart's A Broken Heart for a Sou-venir and the instrumental, Golden Slippers. Paul and the band also borrow from Country music Marty Rob-bins' Pretty Words, Conscience I'm Guilty from the Hank Snow hit parade, Are Y ou Trying to Tell Me Goodye from Perk Williams and Conway Twitty's Walk Me to the Door. You can obtain the CD from Paul in person for $15 or order it online for $15 from www.cdbaby.com/paulschlesinger or www.paulschlesinger.com (CDBaby offers a 10% discount if you order multiple copies.) You can also send Paul a check for $17 (includes postage costs) to: Paul Schlesinger, 2500 Meadow Lane, Taylor, TX 76574. Mike Gross, KSEY-FM, Seymour, TX & KTNK-AM, Lompoc,CA

President’s Letter continued from page 2 dancing. Add a course of Bill Enyeart and Dry Creek for closers and everyone went home satisfied. Thanks guys! Just a reminder the monthly dues for May are $3.40 for couples and $2.50 for singles. In July we start an annual single pay date. Finally, I want to thank a couple of fellas for donat-ing to the cause. John Bush generously gave us an impressive set of hand-made microphone cords for the stage and Larry McDonald donated some nice quality guitar cases that we will probably use for the Hall of Fame raffle. Thanks gentlemen. We appreciate it.

See you on the dance floor, Bill, President

CAROLYN MARTIN Inducted October 4, 2015

Carolyn Martin is a Texas born, Nashville based swing singer. In 2011, Carolyn was inducted into the Texas Western Swing Hall Of Fame. She has been awarded the Will Rogers award from the Academy of Western Artists as the Western Swing Female Vocalist of the Year in 2008, 2010, and 2014. The Western Music Association named Carolyn’s Cookin’ With Carolyn CD the Western Swing Album of the Year. Carolyn’s Tennessee Local CD topped the Western Swing charts for 6 months and was in the Top 10 Western Swing Albums for more than a year after its release. “Swing On”, one of the songs on that album, was named by the Swingin’ West ra-dio show as 2013’s Western Swing Song of the Year. In addition to these awards, the Cowtown So-ciety of Western Swing has named Carolyn a “Hero of Western Swing.” Carolyn’s latest CD, A Platter Of Brownies: The Music of Milton Brown pays homage to the Father of Western Swing, Milton Brown. Brown, along with his band, the Musical Brownies, was a seminal figure in the development of what we now know as western swing. Carolyn grew up with music in the air. “The stable where I kept my horse had a radio tuned to the local country music station, and in addition to what we now call traditional country, they played a lot of western swing – not just Bob Wills songs, but other artists who played western swing or swing influ-enced music. At home, my parents listened to big band swing and to pop singers like Frank Sinatra and Rosemary Clooney.” Carolyn began playing guitar and singing in her teens and, before too long, started playing in public. “My very first job was when my friend Laurie and I started working at a place called “Old Abilene Town”, a tourist attraction out by the interstate. They showed silent movies in the restaurant, and Laurie and I would play in the intermission between the movies.”

RED MURELL (6/27/12-2/10/01) Inducted March 7, 1982

If you want a tough job, try writing all the things that deserve to be told about Red Murrell in one arti-cle. Red’s musical career began in his native Missouri where he played some square dances with his uncle. In the sixth grade, he played bass in the high school orchestra, because he was the only kid big enough to handle the stand-up bass. Red moved to California in 1940 and landed a job in Stockton at the Cotton Club, later called George’s Playhouse, where keeping his job depended on who knew that he was only 19 years of age. Next stop was Sacramento where Red managed to work “both sides of the track” in a short period of time: a skid row joint and the El Rancho Hotel, which at the time was Sacramento’s premier hotel and night spot. Playing with Red on these gigs were Art Hudson and Vern Morgan. He moved on to Los Angeles, where his career be-came entwined with a veritable “Who’s Who?” in the history of western music. To begin with, Red was “discovered” by Cliffie Stone. They worked to-gether for a long time, along with Porky Freeman and Billy Hughes. Two radio shows a day was a common schedule for Red and his fellow musicians, and when they couldn’t get bookings, they worked nights, too. Red played rhythm guitar on the original recordings of Oklahoma Hills, which led to more then 100 re-cording sessions as a studio musician. Among the many Nashville artists who came to California to record in those days were Wally Fowler, Grandpa Jones, and the Delmar Brothers. Red is credited with being the first entertainer to sing a country song in the Hollywood Bowl, he was part of the very first country music show to be broadcast on television in 1946, and he led an eleven piece band at the 97th street Corral. With the changing times and tastes affecting the mu-sic scene, Red made a big move to the San Francisco

FROM THE BAND-STAND

by Doug Weiss

We were blessed with another terrific guest band perfor-mance from Bob Woods’ Swampbilly. Looked like the mix of blues, zydeco, rocka-

billy and swing did the trick in keeping an energetic group of dancers on the floor. The band led by Bob on steel and standard guitar/vocals included Homer Wills, harmonica/vocals; Pete Kmeto, bass/accordion/vocals; Skip Allan Smith, drums and Juli-ete Gobert, acoustic guitar/vocals. Ronnie Elkan joined in on fiddle. The afternoon of dancing was completed when Dry Creek hit the stage and took us to closing time. Bill Enyeart, guitar/vocals fronted the group. Onstage with Bill was Jim Baughman, guitar and looking more like a regular; Biff Adam and Bill Cornett, drums; Billy Smith pressed into action on bass as Nate Brian was recovering from surgery; Ronnie Elkan, fiddle and John Bush, harmonica/vocals. We were treated to vocals by guests Nancy Long, Peggy Van den Broek and Larry McDonald. Thanks to all the musicians for providing us with such a wonder-ful afternoon of music. May’s guest band will be none other than Tony Ara-na and the Jam Band. You don’t want to miss them. Dry Creek will follow. Plan to be with us.

POTLUCK REPORT

WESTERN SWING SOCIETY MUSIC NEWS May, 2016 - Page 8 Red Murrell Continued from Pg 5 Bay area. He started a disc jockey show on KYA, later moving to KVSM in San Mateo and finally settling down at KEEN for sixteen years. While at KEEN, Red shared the all-country format with Cottonseed Clark and Cactus Jack, and man-aged to promote a weekly Saturday night dance at the Foresters Hall in Redwood City. Also while at KEEN, Red became such a successful radio sales-man that he eventually started his own advertising agency, which he continued to “dabble in” from time to time. Of interest to Sacramento Valley residents was the long running commercial for Arden Furniture where Billy Haggar always ended each ad with “Tell’em Billy sent you!” If ever there was a pioneer of Western Swing music and it’s country roots, Red Murrell has to be up there near the top of the list. Red also became a “Hot” fiddle player. Thanks, Red Murrell, for all you were and all you have given to us

Carolyn Martin Continued from Pg. 5 Carolyn soon began working with area bands and a few years later took her own band on the road, play-ing in nightclubs, dance halls and hotel lounges. Af-ter relocating to Nashville, Carolyn worked as a freelance singer and guitarist. Then, one Monday night in 1999, Carolyn went to hear some friends who were playing with a group called the Time Jumpers. They asked Carolyn to sit in with the band and sing a couple of songs. Within a couple of months, she was invited to become a member. Elev-en years later, after having been a part of three CD’s, a DVD that has aired on hundreds of Public Television Stations and sharing two Grammy nomi-nations with the other members of the band, Carolyn left the Time Jumpers to perform full time with her own group, Carolyn Martin’s Swing Band. Carolyn Martin has been described as “A winning throwback to the days where emotion was measured and artful rather than loud and histrionic.” She has recently been inducted into The Northwest Western Swing Society (2014) and Western Swing Music Society of the Southwest. On February 20, 2016 Carolyn was awarded “Western Swing Female Artist for 2015” at the Ameripolitan Music Awards.
