Blair-Duron Restoration

As I sit at my desk adjacent to an ever mounting stack of “to do’s,” of which this newsletter is near the top, I am drawn to look back at what we have accomplished to this point of the year. We have hosted 2 successful conferences, jointly hosted two scholarship fund raising events and received the distinction of “Outstanding Chapter” for 2011 from ICRI National’s Executive Committee.

Our summer conference held at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord featured a broad spectrum of presenters, each an expert in their own right. Rick Edelson’s overview of the ICRI Technical Guidelines as well as insight to ACI 562 reviewed the value of ICRI as a whole. ICRI has been selected to author commentary on the upcoming ACI 562 - which will spell out code language for concrete repair. Tanya Komas presented research being conducted at Alcatraz Island where her students are studying existing

conditions of concrete structures and the history of the island before its days as a penitentiary. Tom Caldwell and Chris Coutu shed light into a tragedy with an overview of their role on the Disaster Search and Rescue Team as Structural Engineers and their efforts in the ConAgra Plant Explosion in Garner NC. Rick Z presented changes in upcoming tax laws, ways to maximize your returns and offered advice on financial planning - (consult your CPA prior to following our advice).

Our WCA/ICRI Sporting Clays had a great turnout and raised $975 for our scholarship fund, and the ICRI/ WCA Spring Classic Golf event raised $1212 in additional dollars for our scholarships! We have been able to fully fund the 2012 scholarship and put a few dollars into our reserve to build upon next year; thank you to all who participated and the member companies who have supported via sponsorship.

By all accounts this has amounted to a rather accomplished year, and yet we have 5 months remaining. In October we return to the coast for our Fall Convention; this year we are in Wilmington, NC at the Executive Development Center. This will be our traditional fall schedule, hospitality on Thursday, a half day meeting Friday followed by golf. Friday evening will have our dinner and awards reception, along with hospitality of a different flavor - we are hosting an oyster roast and seafood buffet. Saturday will be our Business Meeting followed by a half day of seminars. We are tracking some of the industry’s most respected speakers in the world of coatings.

As always the entire Board is working tirelessly, along with Kelly and Brad, to assemble meeting programs and events to enrich your ICRI experience. Should there be any feedback you wish to share feel free to call or email anyone of us, we are all available at anytime. SUMMER SPEEDWAY CONFERENCE A WINNER!

Every few years the Carolinas Chapter offers a Summer Conference and 2012 was the year to roll one of these out of the garage. The Speedway Club at Charlotte Motor Speedway was the site and Heavy Industrial Concrete Construction was the theme and over 50 attendees filled the room to hear an outstanding collection of speakers and expertise. Particularly pleasing was the attendance of 10 UNCC Engineering students brought by Chapter Board member Tara Cavalline and sponsored by Blair-Duron Restoration.

2012 CHAPTER PROJECT OF THE YEAR COMPETITION OPENS

It is official; there is now a simplified PoY Application that works! Last year’s test was successful and it is back and the deadline for submission is September 14.

Everything is on-line on the Chapter website at www.icricarolinas.org/poy.htmlIn an effort to increase project submissions to our annual Project of the Year Award program we have posted a more streamlined option for submitting. Please note that this format is NOT able to be used for submitting to the National ICRI. The National PoY submission deadline is May and our Chapter deadline is September. If you are submitting a project to National in May you can simple submit a copy of that to us by our deadline. Should your project completion deadline miss the National you may uti-lize our formatted template as part of your National submittal to reduce duplication. Please follow the link to the National ICRI website for updated rules and information.

This Express format is a two part process, Part A (PDF) allows for providing the gener-al project information through a series of text fields and drop down menus. To reduce

the amount of typing you will now use a series of check boxes for highlighting Material Technology, Investigation Methods and Surface Preparation Methods. Simply click and choose!

The only “storyline” typing required is the Abstract section in which you will give a 500 word maximum overview of the project. The last section is a 300 word maximum What Makes This Project a Winner section.

The second document is Part B (MS Word Document); this is just for your pictures. On the very first page is a written set of instructions for you to follow. You are free to submit up to 10 photos on the preset 6 pages.

That is it! Part A consists of 3 pages of simple information and Part B is just inserting your photographs. Download the two documents from the web, fill them out, save them, type us an email, attach the documents and your submission is complete! It is our hope that this new simplified method will increase participation and allow you to highlight your projects.

Any questions about the process should be directed to Hayes Thompson at Heard Ratzlaff Construction, mobile: (704) 297-9243 or e-mail at [email protected].

MORE PoY: BUT DON’T CALL HAYES AROUND AUGUST 4

While we know many of you put a lot of time into your Project of the Year submissions, we ask that you don’t call Hayes around August 4 because he will be in the midst of his own Project of the Year. Hayes is engaged to be married to Shera Menier on that date and all the ICRI Carolinas Chapter family wishes them the best for their lives together.
