Ron RIVERA

NFL: 20th seasonPanthers: 6th seasonRegular Season: 52-40-1 (.565)Postseason: 3-3 (.500)

Ron Rivera became the fourth coach in Carolina Panthers history on January 11, 2011.

In five seasons, Rivera has guided the team to a Super Bowl ap-pearance, an NFC Championship and three NFC South titles. He is a two-time (2013 and 2015) Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year award winner.

In 2015, Rivera led the Panthers to the second Super Bowl ap-pearance in team history following a franchise-best 15-1 record and their third consecutive NFC South championship. In the process, Carolina became the fourth team in the Super Bowl era to start a season 14-0, joining the 1972 Miami Dolphins, 2007 New England Patriots and 2009 Indianapolis Colts. Carolina’s 18-game regular season winning streak was the longest in NFC history. In 2014, Rivera led the Panthers to their second con-secutive NFC South championship and the team’s first playoff win since 2005. The Panthers became the first team since 1970 to overcome a six-game losing streak and win their division. In 2013, Rivera directed Carolina to 12 wins, the NFC South title and its first playoff appearance since 2008.

Before joining the Panthers, Rivera was an assistant coach with the San Diego Chargers (2007-2010), Chicago Bears (2004-06, 1997-98) and Philadelphia Eagles (1999-2003). In 2006, the Bears defense led the NFL with 44 takeaways, helping propel Chicago to an appearance in Super Bowl XLI. He is just the third Latino head coach in NFL history, joining Tom Flores with the Oakland Raiders (1979-1987) and Seattle Seahawks (1992-94) and Tom Fears with the New Orleans Saints (1967-1970).

A second-round draft choice in 1984 by Chicago, Rivera played nine seasons with the Bears. Primarily an outside linebacker, he was a member of the 1985 Super Bowl XX winning team.

Rivera played linebacker at Cal (1980-83), where he finished as the school’s all-time leader in sacks (22) and tackles (336).

Born January 7, 1962 in Fort Ord, Calif., Rivera and his wife, Stephanie, have two children—Christopher and Courtney.

Jay Gruden was named the 29th head coach in franchise history on January 9, 2014.

He guided the Redskins to a 9-7 record and an NFC East title in 2015, becoming only the sixth coach in team history to lead the franchise to a playoff berth within the first two years of a coach-ing tenure.

Gruden joined the Redskins after spending three seasons as of-fensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals, during which time the Bengals averaged 10 wins a season, making three consecu-tive playoff appearances and earning an AFC North championship in 2013. In three seasons together, Gruden helped quarterback and 2011 second-round pick Andy Dalton post a 30-18 regular season record (.625).

He also spent seven seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an offensive assistant (2002-08), helping the team to its first league championship in Super Bowl XXXVII.

THE LAST TIME...

Carolina 44, Washington 16november 22, 2015 • bank of ameriCa stadium • Charlotte, n.C

Behind quarterback Cam Newton’s career-high and franchise record-tying five touchdown passes and five takeaways by the defense, Carolina defeated Washington, 44-16, at Bank of America Stadium and improved to 10-0. The first quarter featured four touchdowns between the teams as it ended in a tie at 14. After Carolina safety Kurt Coleman ended Washington’s first drive of the game with an interception, Newton found running back Jonathan Stewart for a 12-yard touchdown. Washington needed just three plays to answer, as quarter-back Kirk Cousins connected with wide receiver DeSean Jackson for a 56-yard touchdown. Carolina regained the lead when fullback Mike Tolbert recorded a 3-yard touchdown catch, but Andre Roberts returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to level the score. Washington appeared to take the lead early in the second quarter when cornerback Chris Culliver jarred the ball away from Olsen and returned the interception 75 yards for a touchdown. But Culliver was penalized for a helmet-to-helmet hit, nullifying the score. Five plays later, Newton spotted wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr. over the middle for a 2-yard touch-down. Carolina’s defense quickly put the offense in position to add to the lead. Linebacker Luke Kuechly stripped the ball from running back Matt Jones, and linebacker Thomas Davis made the recovery at the Washington 24. Newton con-nected with Olsen for a 5-yard touchdown six plays later. Defensive end Kony Ealy’s strip-sack allowed Carolina to widen the gap before halftime. After tak-ing over with 1:54 remaining following the takeaway, Graham Gano converted a 42-yard field goal as the second quarter expired. Carolina recorded another strip-sack on the first play of the third quarter. Cornerback Bené Benwikere blitzed, forced Cousins to fumble and made the recovery at the Washington 11-yard line. Rookie wide receiver Devin Funchess, making his first career start in place of the injured Corey Brown, hauled in a 5-yard touchdown pass from Newton moments later, extending the lead to 38-14. Gano added a 48-yard field goal, and late in the third quarter cornerback Josh Norman registered a forced fumble, leading to the fifth total takeaway. Norman punched the ball out of tight end Jordan Reed’s grasp and Kuechly made the recovery, which led to a 25-yard field goal from Gano. In a scoreless second half for the Redskins offense, they compiled just 57 total yards and Cousins was sacked five times.

KNOCK IT LOOSE

Defensive tackle Star Lotulelei earned his first career NFC Defensive Player of the Week Award for his performance in Week Eight vs. Arizona (11/6/16).

Against the Cardinals, Lotulelei recorded a career-high 3.0 sacks. The 3.0 sacks matched Lotulelei’s previous career high for a single season set in 2013, his rookie season.

Lotulelei's first sack of the game came on Arizona’s first drive and was a strip-sack that resulted in a 46-yard touchdown return by linebacker Thomas Davis.

Lotulelei’s three sacks were part of an eight-sack performance by Carolina. The eight sacks are the second-most in a regular season game in Panthers history.

Lotulelei also contributed to a defense that limited Arizona run-ning back David Johnson to 24 rushing yards. Johnson entered the game with three consecutive 100-yard rushing games.

Lotulelei is the second defensive tackle in franchise history to win a Defensive Player of the Week Award, joining Kawann Short in 2015.

In Week Three vs. Minnesota kicker Graham Gano scored four points to pass wide receiver Steve Smith (454 from 2001-13) for second on the franchise's all-time points scored list. Gano has 514 points in his Panthers career (2012-present). John Kasay (1,482 from 1995-2010) is the franchise's all-time leader.

In Week Two vs. San Francisco (9/18/16), Gano set a career high with 16 points by converting all four field goal attempts and four of five PATs (one was blocked).

In Week Fourteen vs. San Diego (12/11/16), Gano converted all four field goal attempts and has made 10 consecutive dating to Week Nine at Los Angeles (11/6/16).

Last season, Gano set the Panthers franchise record with 146 points in 2015, surpassing John Kasay's previous record of 145 in 1996. Gano's 146 points ranked second in the NFL behind New England's Stephen Gostkowski (151).

Gano made 30-of-36 field goals in 2015. The 30 field goals tied for fifth-most in the NFL and third-most in a season in team history. Gano kicked two game-wining field goals (final two minutes of the fourth quarter or in overtime) in 2015.

Gano earned his first career Player of the Month Award, garnering NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for November

In addition to his field goal abilities, Gano has been important in the field position game. Since the start of 2013, Gano leads the NFL with a 73.9 touchback percentage.

In 2013, 63 of Gano’s 79 kickoffs resulted in touchbacks. His 79.7 touchback percentage was the top mark in the NFL that season and is the highest percentage in a season since Brad Daluiso in 1992 (81.3 percent).

GANO GETS HIS KICKS

Kicker Graham Gano set a career high with 16 points in Week Two vs. San Francisco (9/18/16).

First-year punter Michael Palardy joined the Panthers on Nov. 14 after Andy Lee was placed on injured reserve with a ham-string injury.

At the time of his injury, Lee was among the NFL leaders, ranking fourth with a 49.1-yard gross average and tied for sev-enth with 18 punts inside the 20.

Palardy has been a capable replacement since making his debut in Week Eleven vs. New Orleans (11/17/16). Palardy ranks

sixth in the NFL since Week Eleven with a 44.7-yard gross aver-age. In Week Fourteen vs. San Diego (12/11/16), Palardy recorded a career-high 42.6-yard net average and placed two punts inside the 20-yard line, including one in the fourth quarter that was downed at the 3-yard line.

Palardy, 5-11 and 190 pounds, spent a portion of the offseason with the Panthers, originally signing with the team on April 5. He was waived on June 8. During the regular season, Palardy was a member of the Cleveland and Atlanta practice squads before rejoining the Panthers.

Palardy attended training camp with the Oakland Raiders in 2014 and spent the final regular season game on the Raiders practice squad. He was in training camp with the St. Louis Rams in 2015.
