Solo Once in royal David’s city stood a lowly cattle shed, where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

Choir He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all, and his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; with the poor and mean and lowly, lived on earth our Saviour holy.

ALL And through all his wondrous childhood day by day like us he grew, he was little, weak and helpless, tears and smiles like us he knew; and he feeleth for our sadness, and he shareth in our gladness.

And our eyes at last shall see him, through his own redeeming love, for that child so dear and gentle is our Lord in heaven above; and he leads his children on to the place where he is gone.

UNISON Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, we shall see him; but in heaven, set at God’s right hand on high; where like stars his children crowned all in white shall wait around.

WELCOME AND OPENING PRAYER In the name of God, Creator, Redeemer and Holy Spirit.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Beloved in Christ, at this Christmastide let it be our delight to hear again the message of the angels and in heart and in mind go to Bethlehem and see what is coming to pass there. Together we will journey and worship the Christ-child. Let us, this day, read and mark in Holy Scripture the tale of the loving purposes of God from the first of his blessings in Eden’s garden to the glorious redemption brought by the incarnation. At this time heaven and earth are mingled. To us the Holy One will be born. But first, let us pray for the needs of the whole world - for peace on earth and goodwill amongst all of God’s peoples, for unity and generosity of spirit amongst the Churches which worship him and especially in this our diocese. And, because this would make God’s heart rejoice, let us remember in his name those who are poor and needy, those who are cold, hungry or oppressed, the sick and those who mourn; those who know the name of Christ and those who see the light of Christ shining in friend and neighbour. Lastly let us remember before God all those who rejoice with us but upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which no one can number. Their hope is in the Word made flesh. In Christ the Lord, we and they are all one body forever. These prayers and praises let us humbly offer to God, who comes amongst us at this time, in the words which his Son himself taught us: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Do not bring us to the time of trial but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

SUSSEX CAROL

1 On Christmas night all Christians sing, to hear the news the angels bring, on Christmas night all Christians sing, to hear the news the angels bring - news of great joy, news of great mirth, news of our merciful King’s birth.

2 Then why should we on earth be so sad, since our Redeemer made us glad, then why should we on earth be so sad, since our Redeemer made us glad, when from our sin he set us free, all for to gain our liberty?

3 When sin departs before his grace, then life and health come in its place; when sin departs before his grace, then life and health come in its place; heaven and earth with joy may sing, all for to see the new-born King.

4 UNISON

All out of darkness we have light, which made the angels sing this night; all out of darkness we have light, which made the angels sing this night: ‘Glory to God, on earth be peace, goodwill to all shall never cease’

CHOIR CAROL Words: James Morgan Music: June Collin

’Twas in the stillness of the night that Jesus came; no blare of trumpets heralded his birth

nor broke the wonted silence of the earth; no clang of bells or blatant hue and cry

disturbed the calm beneath the Bethl’hem sky. When Jesus came ‘twas night, and the world was still.

’Tis to the quiet heart he loves to come: not often ‘midst the tumult of the day,

when we can find small time to think or pray, or when, confused by agitating care,

we find no secret place for him to share. We must be still if we his voice would hear.

’Tis to the quiet heart he loves to come:

THIS ENDRIS NIGHT

1 Behold the great Creator makes himself a house of clay, in human flesh, our form he takes which he will bear alway.

2 Hark, how the wise eternal Word as a weak infant cries! In form of servant is the Lord, and God in cradle lies.

3 This wonder all the world amazed, it shook the starry frame; the hosts of heaven stood to gaze, and blessed the Saviour’s name.

4 Glad shepherds ran to view this sight; a choir of angels sings, and eastern sages with delight adore this King of kings.

5 Join then, all hearts that are not stone, to sing with choirs above and celebrate this holy One, the God of peace and love.

LESSON 4 Luke 1: 26 – 38

ANGELS’ CAROL

1 Have you heard the sound of the angel voices

ringing out so sweetly, ringing out so clear? Have you seen the star shining out so brightly as a sign from God that Christ the Lord is here? Have you heard the news that they bring from heaven to the humble shepherds who have waited long? Gloria in excelsis Deo, gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels sing their joyful song.

2 He is come in peace in the winter’s stillness, like a gentle snowfall in the gentle night; he is come in joy like the sun at morning filling all the world with radiance and with light. He is come in love as the child of Mary; in a simple stable we have seen his birth: Gloria in excelsis Deo, gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels singing ‘Peace on earth’.

3 He will bring new light to a world in darkness, like a bright star shining in the skies above; he will bring new hope to the waiting nations when he comes to reign in purity and love. Let the earth rejoice at the Saviour’s coming; let the heavens answer with the joyful morn: Gloria in excelsis Deo, gloria in excelsis Deo! Hear the angels singing ‘Christ is born’.

LESSON 5 The Annunciation - Edwin Muir

The angel and the girl are met, Earth was the only meeting place,

For the embodied never yet Travelled beyond the shore of space.

The eternal spirits in freedom go.

See, they have come together, see, While the destroying minutes flow,

Each reflects the other's face Till heaven in hers and earth in his

Shine steady there. He's come to her From far beyond the farthest star,

Feathered through time. Immediacy of strangest strangeness is the bliss

That from their limbs all movement takes. Yet the increasing rapture brings So great a wonder that it makes

Each feather tremble on his wings.

Outside the window footsteps fall Into the ordinary day

And with the sun along the wall Pursue their unreturning way That was ordained in eternity. Sound's perpetual roundabout Rolls its numbered octaves out

And hoarsely grinds its battered tune.

But through the endless afternoon These neither speak nor movement make,

But stare into their deepening trance As if their gaze would never break.

CHOIR CAROL Words: Christina Rossetti Music: Harold Darke

1 In the bleak mid-winter,

frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone. Snow had fallen snow on snow, in the bleak mid-winter long ago, long ago.

3 Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim thronged the air; but only his mother in her maiden bliss worshipped the beloved with a kiss.

2 Our God, heav’n cannot hold him, nor earth sustain. Heav’n and earth shall flee away, when he comes to reign. In the bleak mid-winter, a stable place sufficed, the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

4 What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb. If I were a wise man, I would do my part. Yet what I can I give him, give my heart.

HYMN Words: Joseph Mohr, trans. S.A. Brook & compilers of Revised Church Hymnary, 1927

Music: Franz Xaver Grüber. STILLE NACHT

1 Still the night, holy the night! Sleeps the world; hid from sight, Mary and Joseph in stable bare watch o’er the Child belovèd and fair, sleeping in heavenly rest, sleeping in heavenly rest.

2

Still the night, holy the night! Shepherds first saw the light, heard resounding clear and long, far and near, the angel-song, ‘Christ the Redeemer is here!’ ‘Christ the Redeemer is here!’

3 Still the night, holy the night! Son of God, O how bright Love is smiling from thy face! Strikes for us now the hour of grace, Saviour, since thou art born! Saviour, since thou art born!

HYMN Words: German carol, trans. Theodore Baker

Music: German traditional arr. Hugo Jüngst JÜNGST

During this hymn, a collection will be taken.

1 While by the sheep we watched at night,

glad tidings brought an angel bright:

How great our joy! (Great our joy!) Joy, joy, joy! (Joy, joy, joy!) Praise we the Lord in heaven on high! (Praise we the Lord in heaven on high!)

2 There shall be born, so he did say, in Bethlehem a child today.

How great our joy!...

3 There shall the child lie in a stall, this child who shall redeem us all.

How great our joy!...

4 This gift of God we’ll cherish well, that every joy our hearts shall fill.

How great our joy!...

LESSON 8 Matthew 2: 1 – 6

CHOIR CAROL Words: English traditional carol Music: Gordon Thornett

1 The first Nowell the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; in fields where they lay, keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, born is the King of Israel!

2 They lookèd up and saw a star, shining in the east, beyond them far; and to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night: Nowell, Nowell…

3 And by the light of that same star, three wise men came from country far; to seek for a king was their intent, and to follow the star wherever it went:

4 This star drew nigh to the north-west; o’er Bethlehem it took its rest, and there it did both stop and stay right over the place where Jesus lay: Nowell, Nowell…

5 Then entered in those wise men three, full rev’rently upon their knee, and offered there in his presence their gold and myrrh and frankincense: Nowell, Nowell…

6 Then let us all with one accord sing praises to our heav’nly Lord, that hath made heav’n and earth of naught, and with his blood mankind hath bought: Nowell, Nowell…

3 Hail, the heaven-born Prince of Peace: hail, the Sun of Righteousness. Light and life to all he brings, risen with healing in his wings.
