Originally this issue was going to be cutesy, fun, pastel… everything typifying a Carefree-Black-Girl/Manic-Southern-Colored-Pixie/All-Natural-Cocoa-Butter-Heaux*/Whatever-the-Fuck we QuirkyBlackGirls™ are calling our-selves now. However the events of the past month in New York, Ferguson, have altered the direction I wanted to take Issue 2. This magazine will still be cutesy and pastel because this is my zine and that’s who I am, but... I need to grapple with a few issues here, like: what does it mean to be Black Girl in the World, when violence is a constant threat from those who are supposed to be peacekeepers, from those who are supposed to serve and protect? When there’s little to no recourse to hold law enforcement ac-countable? When the media puts Black and Brown victims of violence on trial, instead of the ones who kill them? When police and vigilante violence against women of color is ignored? What next? The next piece you will see (What Happens to a Broken Heart) best reflects the state of my psy-che. I can’t go to Ferguson stand with my brothers and sisters, but I’m doing what I can to speak for

Michael Brown in the face of these… heartless un-empathetic white people (white Christians being the worst) whose arguments in defense of Darren Wilson, the Ferguson PD, and the St. Louis County Sheriff Dept. reveal a frightening level of sociopa-thy. My heart clenches at the realization that even people I thought I knew don’t really see me as a person with inalienable rights, or if they do, they have to divorce my race and ethnicity from their perception of me to do so (which says that they don’t see Black people in general as people and reveals the problem with “colorblind” ideology). Just hearing the justifications for not dealing with institutional racism makes me sick at heart and seeing them post fucking puppy videos or sad farewells to dead actors and comedians while ig-noring the murder on America’s front doorstep wounds my soul, bringing to mind the phrase “death by thousand cuts”. I wonder what they would do if it was my father, brother, or cousin who had been killed. Needless to say a lot of peo-ple have been cut out of my life. But racial recon-ciliation is “important” to them. I can’t pretend that I have the answers here, but I hope this issue of caro frames these ques-tions and my experiences in way that add to the discussion to find solutions for the pain my people continue to endure.

O Normally, I would include a timeline of events from some news organization and if you want to search for one you’ll find them, but from DAY ONE the news reporting on Ferguson has been not just biased, directly contradic-tory to the numerous eye witness reports coming from youtube, vine, Instagram, twitter, facebook, etc. So, I have provided links to various resources of live tweeting and photo/video taken by journalists, residents, and vis-iting supporters in Ferguson. ♦ Livestreams from Ferguson, Mo.
