Front Porch Theatricals Front Porch Theatricals, under producers Leon and Nancy Zionts, will present The Spitfire Grill (May 27-June 5) and Floyd Collins (August 26-September 4). Both will be held at the New Hazlett Center for Performing Arts on the Northside.

The Spitfire Grill -- Just released from a five year prison stint for manslaughter, and guided only by a page torn from an old travel book, feisty young parolee Percy Talbott heads to tiny Gilead, Wisconsin, where the local sheriff places her at Hannah’s Spitfire Grill – the only eatery in the dying town. The Spitfire Grill is for sale, but with no interested buyers, Hannah decides to raffle it off. Entry fees are one hundred dollars and the best essay on why you want the grill wins! Soon, mail is arriving by the wheelbarrow full and things are definitely getting hot at the Spitfire Grill. This musical triumph is an inspiring celebration of lives redeemed and the power of what one person can do.

Floyd Collins is based on a true story. In 1925, while chasing a dream of fame and fortune by turning a Kentucky cave into a tourist attraction, Floyd Collins himself becomes the attraction when he gets trapped 200 feet underground. This haunting musical - one of the most acclaimed in recent years - boasts a distinguished score as memorable as it is engaging, as it tells the transcendent tale of a true American dreamer, his trials underground and the media circus above ground.

Regular ticket prices are $30 in advance for adults ($35 at the door) but Front Porch is offering group rates of $24 per person in groups of 15 or more. Please let me know if you are interested in attending a matinee production of The Spitfire Grill on May 29 at 2 pm and/or Floyd Collins at 2 pm on August 28. If enough people are interested I will arrange for us to attend.

2016 Yom HaShoah Commemoration Thursday, May 5, 2016, 7 p.m. JCC Kaufmann Building (5738 Forbes Ave., enter on Darlington Rd.) The Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh will hold its annual Yom Hashoah commemoration, this year with the theme, "Rebuilding of Lives: Post Holocaust Life, 1945-1955."

The event will feature presentations by six teenage Classrooms without Borders seminar participants. The teens have interviewed area Holocaust survivors about their experiences coming to the United States, learning a new language, starting a

family, among other topics. The teens and survivors will light candles together. Community members will light additional candles for Liberators and for the Righteous Gentiles who rescued Jews during the Holocaust. The program will include songs of remembrance, mourning, and hope. The youth choir from the Pittsburgh Society for the Choral Arts returns this year.
