FAMILY MATH AND SCIENCE EXPLORATION
Principal’s Letter Dear El Carmelo Parents, Students, and Community, What a great series of successful, community-building events we have had! From the inaugural Asian Dinner in February, to the Parent Education Programs, to the Book Faire, to the Rumplestiltskin performances, to the Auction Kick-Off Dinner this past weekend— all were extremely engaging and well attended. A special “Thank You” to the organizers of these and other school events for bringing them to fruition through their extraordinary effort and leadership. Updates and Other General Information:
• Plans for Next Year: You have or will soon receive a questionnaire requesting information regarding your plans for the next school year. Many of you have already returned them. If you have not, please do so. This information, along with new registrants, determines the size of our teaching staff. Your timely response is greatly appreciated.
• Site Council Vacancies: The El Carmelo Site Council will have two parent vacancies for two-year terms beginning in the 2007-2008 school year. If you would like more information about the Site Council, please read the article in this edition of the Carmeletter about this topic or feel free to contact one of the current members: Margarita Perreault, Barbara Sonner, Elizabeth Maulick, Maggi Smeal, Leslie Bell, John Walton, Kathy Chin, Grace Lee or Lupe Garcia.
• Other Thank Yous: We are most appreciative of the depth of parent and community involvement. Many of you are actively and quietly involved in the classrooms in an on-going basis. The staff and I would like to say “Thank You” to all who provide essential support to our children. In addition, major school events happen because individuals step up and take responsibility for organizing, coordinating, and making sure to take care of the “details.” To these individuals, I would also like to say, “We are most grateful.” Needless to say, it takes the participation of many helpers (quiet hands) to put on an event, so please forgive me in advance if your names are not mentioned (though I would personally like to express my gratitude to each of you directly). Thank you to:
• Eiko Baldwin, Sherwin Wong, Kim Cho and many others for an extremely successful inaugural Asian Dinner.
• Ana-Maria Dias, Jill Spain, Martha Velez, Alfredo Gonzalez, Yvette Mitchell, Kesha Brown, Nicole Marshall, Cynthia McGraw, Debra Graham, Sharon Johnson, and MANY OTHERS for a job well-done with the Auction Kick-Off Dinner .
• Faith Brigel (Editor), Andrea Christensen (Backup Editor), Erina DuBois (Layout), Wilfredo Gonzalez (Distribution), Hortensia Halstead (Translation) and to ALL contributors for producing such a high quality Carmeletter.

Twice a month much thought, care and effort is given to ensure that this on-going communication vehicle meets its deadline in order to inform our community.
• Jean Hsia for managing and coordinating our eNews in an ongoing basis. Timely communication helps our community stay well informed on current happenings.
• Elizabeth Maulick for continuing to coordinate, monitor and take care of the lice patrol. • Megan Fisher for continuing to organize and maintain the Math Lab Program • Liz Cowie and Carrie Manley for organizing and bringing us such a captivating Visiting
Author, Annie Barrows. • Carrie Manley for organizing the practical and timely parent education events for El
Carmelo. • Sue Hermsen and cast for putting on a fabulous Noon Art Program every other
Wednesday. It’s sure a “beehive” of activity in the MP Room during lunch. Kids come out at the end of the period with projects to share proudly with friends and parents.
• Megan Fogarty for her tireless and successful leadership with the PiE Fundraising campaign.
• Elisa Schmit for another successful Book Exchange week. Students, parents and teachers all took advantage of the opportunity to find new treasures without additional expense.
• Jennifer Mutz and Erina DuBois for organizing the after school student activities. • Rebecca Davis for overseeing another successful Children’s Theatre production
(Rumplestiltskin). Thank you to all who completed and returned the school surveys. Your input will be helpful as we reflect on what we do for all our children at El Carmelo. Warmest regards, Lupe García
PTA President’s Letter
We value our El Carmelo community, but we’ve told you that. We’ve done lots of fun stuff this year as a school community, including the recent Asian Dinner and Auction Kick-Off Dinner. But, lest we forget, we are a part of the larger Palo Alto community and there are lots of opportunities to contribute there, too. Here are a few examples. We have had two wonderful Parent Education events since Winter Break, courtesy of the great organizational efforts of our Parent Education Chair, Car-rie Manley. Both of these events were co-hosted with neighboring schools, Fairmeadow and Palo Verde. In addition, plans are afoot to get together with parents from Fairmeadow and Palo Verde for a softball game and barbeque. More details will be coming when available. Events such as these give us an opportunity to share our community with those around us, giving to them and learning from them. We hope you will take ad-vantage of these events. They’re fun, interesting, and a good chance to meet new people.
Hello, El Carmelo families. It is time again for our annual Pancake Breakfast, brought to you by your very own El Carmelo PTA. It is fun, it is FREE, and it is the place to come for breakfast on:
Date: March 24 Time: 8:30 - 10:30 am Where: Multipurpose Room (MP) Room
We appreciate all of our families here at El Carmelo, and we hope that all of you will come and have a good time with us that morning. If you are a good pancake-flipper and would like to help for an hour that morning, please call Mona Napaa at 424-1431 or Barb Rains at 329-1185. We would love to see you.

Beyond South Palo Alto there are plenty of opportunities for those of us who want to contribute to the whole of the Palo Alto community. The PAUSD Board of Education has a full slate of important issues to deal with that affect our schools and community. Examples include developing a Master Plan for school facilities, the search for a new Superintendent, and a possible new Charter School based on Mandarin Im-mersion. The Board members value community input in these areas and many others we haven’t men-tioned here. Another district-wide way to participate is via the Palo Alto PTA Council, which coordinates and sup-ports parent involvement and child advocacy efforts district-wide. The PTA Council currently has lots of opportunities for those who would like to participate. For more information, visit the PTAC web site (http://www.paloaltopta.org/) or just ask us. Information on these and other events, PAUSD Board activities, and more are available not only in the Carmeletter, but also on our web site (http://elcarmelo.paloaltopta.org/), via eNews, and in the Commu-nity Kiosk (attached to the Carmeletter). Please take advantage of these information resources to find just the right way to get involved and give a little of yourself to our community. The El Carmelo Site Council will have two parent vacancies for two-year terms beginning in the 2007-2008 school year. The School Site Council is a decision making body that is composed equally of four parents and four staff members from El Carmelo School, plus the Principal. The purpose of the council is to work with the principal as an advisory group, in developing a comprehensive school plan and in developing and approving a school improvement budget that is supportive of that plan. The council periodically reviews the implementation of the school plan and assesses its effectiveness and makes appropriate recommendations to update and adjust it. It meets once a month, typically on the first Monday of the month from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. The term of office for all members of the site council is two years, with the exception of the principal, who is a permanent member. Two of our parent members’ terms are expiring in June of 2006: Margarita Perreault and Barbara Sonner. We will be having an election in May during our school Open House to replace these capable and hard working members. If you would like more information about the Site Council, feel free to contact one of the current members: Margarita Perreault, Barbara Sonner, Elizabeth Maulick, Maggi Smeal, Leslie Bell, John Walton, Kathy Chin, Grace Lee or Lupe Garcia. If you would like to run for this office, please write a paragraph about yourself and why you would like to be on the Site Council. Give it to Lupe or Jennifer Fernandez in the Main Office by Friday, May 4, 2007. We will add your name and statement to the ballot and print it in the following Carmeletter for the community. In addition, the ballot (with the candidates’ names and statements) will also be printed and posted on Main Office windows and school bulletin boards for the community. The election will be held at Open House on May 23, 2007. Lupe Garcia

The El Carmelo PTA is looking for volunteers for next year. If you are wondering how to get more involved and to
meet other parents, volunteering to ‘chair’ one of the positions below is a great way to do it. The following positions are open for someone like you to step into. If there is an event or activity listed below that interests you, or if you have questions or need clarification, please contact one of the members of the nominating committee (that’s a fancy term for ‘recruiters’). The PTA runs solely on volunteers just like you. The support, time and interest you give to the PTA benefits our whole school community. »»Critical Positions Available These positions need to be filled soon, because of the time-critical nature of the job. TREASURER: Help prepare budget. Keep accurate records of income and expenditures. Maintain PTA bank accounts. Issue checks to cover expenses. Present financial reports at PTA and Executive Board meetings. Follow local and national PTA guidelines and procedures. PIE REPRESENTATIVE: Report - Provide two-way communication between your school and Partners in Education (PiE). Keep your school community informed via newsletter, eNews and posters/flyers on campus. Provide periodic updates and opportunities for feedback through special PiE events, attend PTA and Site Council meetings, and meetings with principal, PTA presidents and Site Council chair. Represent - Attend PIE representative meetings held approximately once every two months (this may change) to represent your school's needs and interests, as well as to receive campaign updates and information on planned campaign activities. Rally - Be PiE's primary cheerleader at your school site. Recruit a team of volunteers at your school to help with campaign activities (e.g., write personal notes on direct appeal letters, help with phone bank calls or other special events). NOON ART: Select 2 art activities for each week, recruit parent volunteers to help. Reserve MP room. Advertise Noon Art with banners, Carmeletter, fliers. Procure (solicit donations or inexpensively gather) materials for projects. Set up projects before lunch one day each week, clean up by 1:30. [We will help you to recruit other ‘helpers’ for this position] BACK TO SCHOOL SUPPLIES CO-CHAIR (work with Megan Fisher): Combine classroom fall buy lists and purchase supplies in bulk. Sign interested families up through spring Carmeletter. Buy items over the summer, determine cost per child and collect funds from parents interested in bulk buy program. Distribute bulk purchase to parents and collect checks on or around the day class lists are available. Alternatively, work with school staff to arrange for bulk purchase to be distributed throughout the school year. ENEWS: Notices are sent from the district level and from the El Carmelo community. Assemble and organize the notices and send out weekly. Usually no editing required. Before mailing out to El Carmelo community, it is run by Principal, PTA President and VP, and Carmeletter Editor, who usually approve without suggesting any changes. Typically takes about one hour a week.

volunteers like YOU!

Educator Ali Zidel Meyers, MSW recently led a PTA session on teaching children time management and organizational skills. Meyers said kids learn more by what we do, than by what we say; our daily modeling has a huge impact on what our children learn and do. Other tips:
• Start Talking: As parents we often have a running, internal monologue going on in our heads about how much time we have to get various tasks done. Meyers suggests verbalizing that process so that your kids can learn from you. They will hear as you strategize and prioritize what needs to get done and how much time each thing will take.
• Be The Farmer, Not The Fly: Often, as parents we buzz around, saying ‘do this, do that, stop this, stop
that,’ and somehow all that buzzing doesn’t really register with kids. It is the same way a fly buzzing around your face is annoying. Instead, Meyers says try to think more like a farmer. What does the farmer do to grow bountiful crops? It’s not about glaring at the plant and saying, “grow!” It is about making the conditions right for the plant to thrive. For example, if mornings are chaotic at your house, think less like the fly (Buzz-buzz, hurry-hurry, where are your books? Where is your sweatshirt?) Instead, think more like the farmer. That might mean having your kids pack lunches the night before or help lay out clothes. The farmer thinks ahead and does what needs to be done so the conditions are optimal for the tasks at hand and ahead.

An enormous thank you to everyone who helped with the Book Exchange:
· Jean Hsia, my mentor · Student Council Teachers Diana McCoy and Debbie Hillary for organizing the students · Students who hauled over 1700 books: Mia Cain, Ahran Cho, Laurel Fisher, Jordan Ford, Frankie
Hattler, Clara Harrington, Lexie Livingston, Kevin Marachin, Tim Sarmiento, Everett Spackman, Kati Espinoza, Willam Yang
· Parent Volunteers who sorted the many donations: Sarit Arazi-Elata, Jeff Bondor, Serena Chandley, Jennifer Chu, Liz Cowie, Rebecca Davis, Ana-Maria Dias, Erina DuBois, Gwen Fisher, Megan Fogarty, Sue Hermsen, Michelle Kasper, Sripriya Kannan, Carrie Manley, Lisa Marachin, Asmita Runge, Barb Sonner, Tanya Wing, Stephanie Youngquist
· Our fantastic administrative assistants: Jennifer Fernandez and Ginny Nagao (for keeping me sane and for gathering boxes)
· All the wonderful teachers for “talking up” the event and recording on class lists · All the students who donated books, especially those who shared many extra books so every
student could enjoy this event · Thea for always skipping and smiling despite being dragged around with Mom
After the teachers looked through the extra books for their classrooms, Troop 654 collected an estimated 250 leftover books for the East Palo Alto Schools. To anyone I have forgotten, I apologize. It was only with your help that this was a successful event. See you next year. Elisa Schmit

Eiko Baldwin Based on the large turnout, great food, inspirational demonstrations, and enlightening exhibits, El Carmelo's first ever Asian Dinner was definitely a tremendous success. I want to thank all the parents who contributed by bringing food and/or helping during the dinner. Also, thanks to the PTA for giving me the opportunity to coordinate this event, and especially to Executive V.P. Ana-Maria Dias who worked with me.
