from the choir in front of you
Much of my role as Editor is not only showcasing great repertoire selections from our fabulous writers and arrangers, but also helping educators achieve greater success in the classroom and in performances.
My TOP FIVE musical elements to PLAN and be PROACTIVE for a POSITIVE school year are as follows:
1. Tone2. Vowels
3. Repertoire selection4. Sequential year-long sight reading plan
5. Score study / systematic lesson plans
Success begins with preparation. It’s what you plan and do in the fall that sets up those springtime concerts and end-of-the-year assessments. With this in mind, I urge you to consider a positive, proactive plan as you commit to what you are going to teach, how you are going to teach it and whom you are teaching.
Please enjoy our magazine, packed with programming suggestions, teaching tips, composer insights and more.
Wishing you much success!

ON TEXT AND MUSICby Paul David Thomas
One of the most challenging aspects of composing for voice is finding just the right text to set. The text must not only speak to yourself as the composer but also to the choir for whom you are writing. While the process can feel like one is grasping in the dark, once the right poem is found, the music will often quickly unfold, adding meaning and nuance to the text that only melody, harmony, and rhythm can provide. Marrying text and music to create something new is similar to the way a group of diverse and unique individuals come together to create a choir. For me, the creation of one voice out of many is what makes choral music so powerful and why I am drawn to write it.
MEET OUR COMPOSERS
One way music teachers can evaluate their effectiveness is by seeing how many students continue in music classes or ensembles. How many of the students you have taught are still involved in music making? How many have quit? What can you do so you will never be a child’s last music teacher?
It breaks my heart when I hear someone say, “I can’t sing.” Perhaps the child was told he can’t sing, when in reality the child just needed help finding their singing voice. I believe this: almost every child can learn to sing. Every child deserves to experience the joys of music making. How? Perhaps the following principles will help:
Everyone matters: Choir is a
“safe and loving” place where everyone is known, respected and valued.
Words matter: Shaming, name-calling or bullying will not be tolerated. “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can break the spirit.” (l.s.b.)
Music matters: Choose quality music of excellence with inspiring lyrics. If you make your choir a safe place where everyone matters, if you encourage positive words and musical excellence, and if you share your love of music, it is likely you will never be a child’s last music teacher.

DE-MYSTIFYING THE COMMISSION PROCESS
by Meredith Tompkins
I often meet conductors who wish to
teach something new for their ensemble.
They love the idea of a commission, but
don’t know where to begin. Thankfully, it
has never been easier to contact com-
posers and share with them your vision
for a new work. Many have flexible pric-
ing and are open to working with your
budget to create something that fits your
needs. For text ideas, works in the public
domain are an excellent place to start,
or consider using texts (with permission)
written by local poets or students. Share
information about your ensemble, like
personality, ranges, or musical strengths,
with the composer. Any information
along these lines will be valuable as
they design something unique that your
group
can bring
to life.

TEACHING TIPSEFFECTIVE METHODS THAT WORK!
Provide a clear purpose for every activity to pro-mote goal-oriented behavior
Use creative repetition to develop a foundation of skills and attain mastery of each
Separate rhythm and pitch (reduce cognitive overload)
Apply the concepts of accurate, expressive singing to vocalizing, as well as music-reading and repertoire
Build a pyramid of musicianship throughout each segment of the lesson plan by proceeding in a systematic, sequential manner
Facilitate the student’s ability to transfer concepts and skills from one activity to another as well as from one song to another
Integrate repertoire preparation with developing music-reading skills by utilizing melodic, rhythmic and harmonic exercises taken directly from the repertoire
Through careful score study, devise strategies to promote student success in mastering the challenges of each new piece
Pace music-reading and repertoire rehearsal to maximize expressiveness, including pure vowels, supported singing and musical phrasing
Strive to create independent singers and musicians and capitalize on the benefits of unaccompanied singing

MIDDLE SCHOOL CHORUS
and your students will love music. Quickly, tell them what they did correctly (praise), what they need to correct (one or two things no more!), how to correct it, and GET BACK TO THE MUSIC. All behaviors, from coming into class, warming up, singing with good vowels and clear diction, along with quality repertoire will build morale and enthusiasm and result in students not only wanting to be in chorus, but wanting to get their friends in chorus, too.
Students must enter the classroom in an or-derly manner (I know it’s middle school, but I’ve seen rock star classrooms where they do just that). Do a quick warm up – no more than 7 minutes in a 50 minute class. Then “get to the first piece.” Repertoire selection is a huge factor in middle school. Students don’t like silly, trite music. Why? Because it will make them look silly and trite. There is a wealth of appropriate music for middle school choirs, much more than when I started writing for this age group in 1993. Give quick instructions and “back to the music.” Simple music is not necessarily bad, and complicated music is not necessarily good. Good music is just that: Good music. Practice accurate reinforcement. If someone is off-task, rather than paying attention to them, give at-tention to someone on-task in close proximity, and your first strategy is to ignore the off-task behavior, by praising someone doing the right thing. Off-task students want attention. Don’t give it to them.
All the best, and if you have any questions you can reach me at: www.RussellRobinson.com
The above title IS doable! In my work in music classrooms both here in the US and world-wide in international schools, I have seen many mid-dle school choral classrooms where students are not engaged and thus, not making quality music. The solutions are quite simple; howev-er, we must be consistent in our techniques to maximize student engagement and musician-ship. First, students in music classes want to “make music” not “hear about making music.” We have one of the greatest reinforcers in the school curriculum – MUSIC. I have seen middle school choral classrooms that do not actively make music for long periods of time. This is the quickest way to student “disengagement.” Try for the following ratio: 10% instructions and 90% active music making. Videotape yourself and check how many minutes you spend on in-structions or other verbal behaviors, and how many minutes they are actually singing. Get the percentages of singing up, combined with accu-rate reinforcement and correction techniques,

ALL TOGETHER, SING!Warm-up Partner Songs for Choirs With or With-out Changing Voices Selected and arranged by Lon Beery• Opportunities to work on
matched pitch songs and sing-ing independence
• Grouped by age from younger to older
• Partner songs in various keys accommodate fluctuating vocal ranges
• Voice testing models and other helpful teaching strategies are also included
BLB012 – Book
What People are Saying:All Together, Sing!, a new skill-building resource developed by Lon Beery, will become invaluable to many new choral teachers who are working with adolescents in the voice change, as it provides multiple opportunities to both match pitch and develop the singing independence required for maintaining multiple parts. More experienced teachers will value the various keys provided for the partner songs, particu-larly teachers who are sometimes challenged when transposition at the keyboard is needed to accom-modate fluctuating vocal ranges. Songs are grouped by age, from younger to older, thus allowing mature beginners to work at a beginning skill level without the personal angst that arises from singing tunes that seem babyish. Voice testing models and other helpful teaching strategies are also included. There are multiple partner song resources available for building singing indepen-dence, but few are as comprehen-sive as Lon Beery’s new offering.

What People are Saying:No one can ever forget the immor-tal words of Maria in Rogers and Hammerstein’s “Sound of Music,” – “let’s start at the very beginning – that’s a very good place to start!” This is exactly where the “SOS” sight-reading book begins. What better place to “uncover the mys-teries” of the sight-reading pro-cess than by providing a LOGICAL, SEQUENTIAL methodology, acces-sible by middle school students, elementary students – actually, ANYONE for whom this process is brand new! The authors provide a clear and concise approach which begins with pitch and rhythm separated. Further into the book, pitch and rhythm are combined in simple unison exercises in a time-ly, understandable and consistent fashion. For those who teach young singers, this book prom-ises to offer a usable, sequential, fundamental format which will be immediately accessible within the choral rehearsal or in the general music class.
—Lynne Gackle, Ph.D. Prof. Ensembles, Assoc. Dir.
Choral Activities, Baylor University School of Music
The SOS sight-reading book by Laura Farnell and Mary Jane Phillips is a sterling example of appropriate materials: it is well sequenced and it starts at the true beginning, making no assumption of prior musical knowledge or training. Another strength of this book is the use of common keys across all ex-cerpts on a page, allowing some or all to be read simultaneously, which accommodates student engagement and successful participation in choirs of mixed ability singers. Thus, teachers have more options to meet in-dividual needs of all students, ranging from high achievers to students with special needs and all between. For those who em-brace “developmental teaching”, designed so that many novice singers can experience choral music, this book promises to be invaluable.
—Dr. Judy BowersProf. Choral Music Education

The SOS sight-singing book by Laura Farnell and Mary Jane Phillips will really be effective in the classroom. The authors do a great job of limiting the range of the exercises, providing the teacher an option to pitch the ex-ercises in a range that is comfort-able for their male singers. The exercises make sense both me-lodically and harmonically and nicely gravitate toward “do”, “mi” and “so”, providing smart anchor points for the students. They are written in the common keys of F, G, and C, thereby allowing stu-dents to be successful without having to learn twelve different keys. Lastly, the exercises prog-ress sequentially introducing concepts in a logical order. Stu-dents who study this system will undoubtedly improve their skills in sight-singing.

STEPS, Strategies and Tools En-couraging Proficient Sight Sing-ing, is veteran music educator Denise Eaton’s effective appro ach to teaching sight-reading. The first volume of the STEPS book series provides melodies and vi-sual fundamentals to sight-sing in five keys. This well-thought-out, systematic method gives students tools to improve their sight-read-ing skills through creative repeti-tion. Students will learn how both visual and aural interval identifica-tion exercises can be used to train the eyes and ears to read, think, and hear ahead.

What People are Saying:“I have long respected Denise Ea-ton’s work as a master teacher. In STEPS she has created a sight reading resource that creates ample opportunity for student success through an effective se-quence that explores practical intervallic training exercises and melodies.”
— Andrea RamseyComposer, conductor-teacher
STEPS is an extremely helpful and valuable resource that will enable those who use it to gain profi-ciency in both sight-singing and general musicianship. Through a carefully designed sequential ap-proach, STEPS introduces the con-cepts of sight-singing in its most basic form, beginning with scales, triads and fundamentals before moving into melodic patterns. This guide allows the students to work through the materials at his/her own pace, taking into account the diversity of learning styles and abilities that will be present in the classroom.
Melodic patterns found in the ex-ercises can be isolated, analyzed, reviewed, and applied to actual choral literature. I highly recom-mend STEPS for any developing musician!

What People are Saying:InSIGHT SINGING supplies valu-able teaching tools which can unlock the mystery which often surrounds music reading. The ap-proach is systematic, intuitive and thus, user-friendly....

Imagine your students becoming independent sight-readers! This book provides a systematic process for improving the following: sight-singing skills, integration of visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning styles in reading music, and overall musicianship. The learning strategies which accompany the melodies presented in this text incorporate all senses through multisensory learning. These ideas give direction to the learner and the teacher in developing the necessary musical skills and confidence to sight-sing in a manner which includes musical accuracy while encouraging good vocal technique.

SNAPCARDSSight Reading Skill Building Flashcards in a “Snap”! Theresa PritchardSnapCards, a series of carefully curated skill-building flashcards, is a classroom tool conceived by Theresa Pritchard and designed to help students confidently learn to sight read while having fun as a class. After years of learn-ing which intervals and patterns are consistently challenging for emerging singers, Pritchard has developed a reliable method for simplifying this typically intimidat-ing subject. Educators will find fun and exciting suggestions for utiliz-ing the cards in the classroom for both teaching and assessing read-ing skills. SnapCards for Bass Clef features intervals inherent to the bass voice sight reading skill set, grouped into ten groups of five, with each pitch set building upon the previous pitch set.

Successful choral programs are the result of sound teaching. Sound teaching is rooted in skill development. Skill development depends upon structured, logical, and sequential materials. InSIGHT SINGING is designed with the ma-terials needed to produce skilled and confident sight-readers. Uti-lizing a systematic approach, this book is an excellent teaching tool for training the whole musician, developing the ability to read rhythm and intervals while encour-aging expressiveness and appro-priate singing technique. From the choral methods classroom to the public school choir room, InSIGHT SINGING is an invaluable resource for both the student musician and the experienced teacher.
