YMCA PhilosophiesYOUTH DEVELOPMENT, HEALTHY LIVING, SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Our MissiOn stAteMentTo put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

Our visiOn stAteMentTo strengthen the foundations of our community through healthy living, social responsibility, and community impact.

Our vAlues stAteMentAt the YMCA, our concern for our community goes beyond the sport or program in which participants are involved.

The development of character, especially in our youth, is a vital concern for all of us in today’s society.

All of our programs are designed to promote character development in these five main areas:

Word is out that the Y has changed its brand. We have a bold new logo, fresh colors, and a

vibrant feel. What hasn’t changed though, is the Y’s strong mission and Christian principles.

The new brand simply allows us to communicate more clearly our impact, our values (caring,

honesty, respect, responsibility, and inclusion) and our focus on youth development, healthy

living, and social responsibility.

We’re reminding people that our fitness classes don’t just

improve physical health; they help unleash a new outlook

on life. We don’t just bring families together, we help

families stay together. And youth sports don’t just teach

kids to score goals. They teach character and social skills

for future leaders.

Look for great new changes over the next year as we

put our mission into action with our new brand!

sincerely RONALD K. NELSON

YOutHdevelopmentKids are the building blocks for the future. That is why helping to create strong, healthy kids is the foundation of all YMCA programs. We believe in nurturing the potential of every child and teen. This is done through child care, education, leadership, sports, play, and Camp Manitou-Lin. These programs allow us to take an active hand in helping each child succeed in their goals and reach their full potential.2

CHilD CAreChildren need a safe and healthy environment to grow up. Whether you are using Afterschool Care, KidZone or one of our Child Development programs, parents can be assured that their kids are learning to grow from caring, adult role models.

eDuCAtiOn AnD leADersHiPAt the Y, we believe that education is extremely important to shaping a child’s life. Kids have the opportunity to engage in academic enrichment programs, as well as school readiness programs to fit their needs.

swiM, sPOrts, & PlAYAll kids need the chance to play and be around positive role models and friends. The Y’s sports programs such as basketball and soccer give each child the unique opportunity to learn sportsmanship and leadership skills. And what better way to have fun with friends than swimming? Our swim classes help kids at all levels learn to swim in a safe and fun environment.

CAMPThe Y offers many world-class camps that build better people, and bring kids together to form bonds and make friends. Our Burn Camp, Cancer Camp, and Therapeutic Riding Camp are just a few of our specialized experiences that enable each child to explore the world through a new lens.

FAMilY tiMeStrong families are the cornerstone of the Y. With family memberships, special nights, and family friendly programming, the Y helps everyone stay connected while encouraging a healthy lifestyle. Whether it be cheering on a loved one during a team sport, supporting each other while working out, or joining in family activities such as Adventure Guides, the Y works to bring families closer together.

HeAltH, well-BeinG, & FitnessThe Y gives opportunities to all who wish to live a healthier lifestyle or improve their well-being. Through our group fitness classes such as Martial Arts, or our Healthy Lifestyle programs such as Stress Management and Relaxation, everyone has the chance to improve their health.

sPOrts & reCreAtiOnEveryone needs time to just play. Playing is one of the Y’s secret ways to bring the community to-gether to engage in fitness. Through activities such as adult sport leagues, and recreational activities like the high ropes course, the community can come together, enjoy each other’s company, and maintain healthy lifestyles.

GrOuP interestsEveryone has their own unique interests that actively engages their minds and bodies. The Y caters to this need by offering specialized programs like Healthy Cooking, group trips, and one of our newest programs, Adult Bible Study. We are able to bring people together while giving them the chance to do what they love.

3HeAltHYliving

Did you know there’s more to being healthy than just being physically active? The YMCA strives to make each member of the community healthy in spirit, mind, and body. Members are given the opportunities they need to learn a new skill, try a new fitness class, and come closer to their faith.

sOCiAlresponsibility

Working together to bring about meaningful change is something we feel strongly about at the Y. As one, we can bring about social and global change and give members of the community a chance to volunteer, give back, and advocate for their neighbors.4

sOCiAl serviCesCommunity is the backbone to the YMCA’s success. That’s why we want to give back and provide support to our neighbors. Our biggest success, Activate West Michigan (AWM), has created local solutions for obesity and chronic illness for thousands of people including the Healthy U program, which has educated 6,000 youth per year on living healthier lifestyles.

GlOBAl serviCesWe realize that our community extends beyond our city, our state, and even our country, which is the reason the Y goes beyond to engage in global activities. We have a partnership with Léon, Mexico that allows us to share in each other’s experiences and cultures. Through unique collaborations like this, we can grow and learn together.

vOlunteerisM & GivinGWithout our thousands of volunteers, we would be unable to give back to the community as much as we do. Through our Managerial, Policy and Program Volunteers, as well as our many interns, we are able to accomplish and give back so much more than we would otherwise. Every hour given to us from a volunteer results in healthier kids, families, and communities.

ADvOCACYWe care about our communities’ needs and are a strong advocate for them. Through regional, state, and national legislatures, we work to bring awareness to issues facing our communities and members. Y staff annually visits Washington DC to meet one-on-one with senators, representatives, and key funders to help bring much needed resources here to West Michigan. Our community is our family and we work hard to make lives as healthy and happy as possible!
