Hi to all my friendly volunteers! With this warm weather it must be Spring. Of course there are a lot of other ways to tell that Spring is coming to the Los Robles volunteer group. For one thing, the annual Frist Award has been presented to an outstanding volunteer. And the winner is...you’ll have to come to the dinner at the Volunteer Recognition Dinner to find out who it is! Another sign of Spring is that we are working on the annual Adult Recognition Dinner, which is scheduled for April 27th at the Reagan Library. The theme will be the Roaring 20’s. Hey, all you students high school and college -- keep your eyes open for the applications for scholarships. The apps are available from the COD. Deadline for submitting completed scholarship applications is April 10 th by 5:00PM to Irene. Please make sure your application package is complete, as scholarships are limited. Good luck! CARING MATTERS

Hey, all you students – high school and college -- keep your eyes open for the applications for scholarships. The apps are available from the COD. Deadline for submitting completed scholarship applications is April 10th by 5:00PM to Irene. Please make sure your application package is complete, as scholarships are limited. Good luck! Spring 2017

Hi, everyone!

Welcome to Spring! It’s almost time for the Adult Recognition Dinner at the Reagan Presidential Library. You will have received an invitation by now, showing the menu (yummy!) choices. Please be sure to get your tear-off back to me as soon as possible. All new adult volunteers are invited, as well as all of you adult volunteers who have so faithfully been with us for years. This will be the bee’s knees, so get ready to ankle it to the Reagan! See you there! On the hospital front, Los Robles Hospital has been chosen as one of only five HCA hospitals in the country to become a Hospital of the Future. This will unfold over the next 18 months to two years and will include some new construction and state-of-the-art patient-care technology. As always, we will be flexible and accommodating with all the changes. The staff will need to be flexible, as well, and we can do a lot to assist them. Keep up the good work!

VOLUNTEER of the QUARTER by Ina Wentzel

Please join me in congratulating Judy Cannings, who was selected as the Volunteer of the Quarter by Los Robles Hospital. This award is given quarterly by the hospital to a staff member and a volunteer, for going above and beyond what is expected of them in their duties around the hospital. Judy has been a volunteer since April 2012. Currently our third vice president on the volunteer Board of Directors, she processes all new applicants and interviews, schedules and sets up the orientations and tracks the TB and immunization requirements. Judy also enjoys interacting with the student volunteers, discovering a bit about them. A floater when needed, Judy also subs at the COD desk when needed there. She also serves on the hospital Safety Committee. Judy likes working with our students and her life before Los Robles is why. Judy was an educator for over 30 years, a middle- and high-school teacher; a counselor; technology coordinator; director of technology services; assistant principal and principal! As an adjunct professor, she also taught how to integrate technology, at three different post high-school schools. Judy has three children, six grandchildren and lives with her dog Christine in Wildwood. She volunteers with the Angel Threads program at Calvary Community Church, distributing clothes to the needy, as well as volunteering in her granddaughter's second-grade class and babysits her grandchildren. We are lucky to have this busy, talented volunteer at Los Robles. (Wonder when she has the time!)

HCA Named a World’s Most Ethical Company

for Eighth Consecutive Year Recognition honors companies that lead with integrity and align principles with action

Nashville, Tenn., March 13, 2017 – Hospital Corporation of America (NYSE: HCA), a

leading healthcare provider with 171 hospitals and 118 freestanding surgery centers in 20 states

and the United Kingdom, has been recognized by the Ethisphere Institute, a global leader in

defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices, as a 2017 World’s Most

Ethical Company®, a recognition HCA has earned every year since 2010. CA is one of only

seven companies honored in the healthcare provider category this year.

“HCA’s shared values of honesty, integrity and respect for all people unite us and are vital to

our mission to care for and improve human life,” said Milton Johnson, HCA’s chairman and

chief executive officer. “Being honored for eight consecutive years is a reflection of HCA’s

culture and the good work our people do every day, providing excellent care to our patients and

a positive work environment for our colleagues.”

Throughout its history, HCA has invested in its communities. In 2016, HCA donated $23.2

million to charitable organizations and provided charity care, uninsured discounts and other

uncompensated care at a cost of $2.8 billion. HCA’s culture of inclusion also supports the

delivery of culturally competent care, with affiliates using 250 languages and dialects to

communicate with their diverse patient populations. With approximately 5 percent of all hospital

services in the U.S. occurring at an HCA facility, the company uses data from its more than 27

million annual patient encounters to advance science, improve patient care and save lives.

“It’s an honor to be recognized as a World’s Most Ethical Company for eight consecutive

years,” said Alan Yuspeh, HCA’s senior vice president and chief ethics and compliance officer.

“HCA’s comprehensive, values-based ethics and compliance program promotes the highest

standards of ethical conduct for our 240,000 employees, and supports a culture of treating our

patients and communities with dignity and respect.”

The World's Most Ethical Company assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute’s

Ethics Quotient® (EQ) framework which offers a quantitative way to assess a company’s

performance in an objective, consistent and standardized way. The information collected

provides a comprehensive sampling of definitive criteria of core competencies, rather than all

aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics.

In 2017, 124 honorees were named spanning 19 countries and four continents, and

representing more than 52 industries. The full list of the 2017 World's Most Ethical Companies

can be found at http://worldsmostethicalcompanies.ethisphere.com/honorees/.

The Ethisphere® Institute, a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices, honors superior achievement through its World’s Most Ethical Companies recognition program, provides a community of industry experts with the Business Ethics Leadership Alliance (BELA) and showcases trends and best practices in ethics with the publication of Ethisphere magazine. Lillian Fox turned 80 in October. (That’s Lillian peeking around the wrapping on her Nothing Bundt Cakes birthday cake.) Congratulations, Lillian, and many more!

On a Tuesday morning in early December, a gentleman came into the main lobby and asked if we could use this new stuff bear for the pediatric patients. After assuring him that the bear would find a good home, the gentleman left, never telling his name or why the brand-new bear was coming our way. It was decided that the bear would have the best home with our adopt-a-family, who have five children. Here’s the bear going to his new home, along with all the gift cards and presents from the volunteers to our special adopt-a-family. Helping him out the door is, from left, Gary Levine (seated), Al McLaury (standing) and Irene.

I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars.
