2016-17ANNUAL REPORT
COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLSOF CHATHAM COUNTY
OUR MISSIONTo surround students with a community of support, empowering
them to stay in school and achieve in life.
WE ACHIEVE OUR MISSION BY:
(1) keeping kids in school, (2) doing whatever it takes to eliminate barriers
and (3) never giving up, on anyone.
OUR VISIONChatham is a county where all children and their families
thrive and contribute to the community.
Dear Friends of Communities In Schools of Chatham County,
In 1989 a small group of dedicated people (court and guidance counselors, teachers, mental health professionals ) sat around a table and pitched in $5 each to get a post office box and start a non- profit called Chatham County Together! that would dedicate its mission to helping Chatham kids at risk for court involvement. Almost thirty years later, now as Communities In Schools Chatham County, having served 1000’s of kids, this organization continues to offer at risk youth opportunities for their personal growth and multiple ways to connect with caring adults and their community. We now “surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.”
While the issues and challenges that the youth in our community face persist, so does your generosity, energy and compassion. Without you, our job would be impossible. Together, we can continue to offer hope for Chatham's most challenged children and their families.
Thank you for all the ways you partner with us to make CIS of Chatham County the success that it is! We truly couldn’t do this work without your support. This next year is sure to be a great one.
In appreciation and service,
Kim Caraganis, Executive Director

Working alongside school personnel and community partners, CIS model programming is based directly inside Chatham Middle School and Virginia Cross Elementary in Siler City. A Student Support Specialist case manages under-performing students with academic and non-academic supports throughout the school year. Student behavior, grades and absences are tracked and services are adjusted as needed.
CIS weaves five basic essentials every child needs into all programming:
1. A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult.
2. A safe place to learn and grow.
3. A healthy start and a healthy future.
4. A marketable skill to use upon graduation.
5. A chance to give back to peers and community.

ONE STUDENT’S EXPERIENCEBRICELWe first met Bricel through her involvement with Juvenile
Services as a 6th grader. She was having difficulty with
peers at school and family at home. Since her involvement
with the CIS model school program, Bricel has taken
advantage of the opportunities in front of her to learn
and grow. Interventions targeting her specific needs
have helped her continue to progress both in and out of
school. She has shown improvement in her academics,
her behavior, and has even set goals for high school
and beyond. Most importantly, she has displayed great
courage in strengthening relationships with her family,
teachers and, peers.
Bricel looks forward to pursuing her goals and
dreams utilizing her experiences with CIS of
Chatham County’s wrap around supports as a
foundation. We are all excited to watch her soar.

BRICEL’S SUPPORT EXPERIENCES AT SCHOOL
By working with CIS programs I was able to learn many new skills. Especially how to be in control of my emotions. I have also learned that by helping others, I help myself. I enjoyed my time so much I will be continuing to work with CIS staff as a volunteer to help others in need. I was able to successfully reach my goals during my time in the program, and even exceed my own expectations.
