CARING FOR THOSE IN NEED – AFRICAN AIDS DINNER

On Monday evening, I had the pleasure of attending the Year 12 African Aids Foundation Dinner, organised by our Year 12 students. The dinner is one of the events held within the College to raise funds to support of the work being undertaken with children in Africa who have been orphaned by the spread of the HIV Aids virus. The theme of the evening was ‘TV Shows

and Movies’ and it was a wonderful evening attended by many ‘stars’.

Our Year 12 students were touched by the presentation of our special guests, Mr and Mrs Bruce Willmann, who outlined the work undertaken by the Foundation.

Mr Willmann shared deeply how he was touched, a number of years ago, by an article in the Time Magazine which detailed the devastating impact that the Aids virus was having in Africa and how this led him to become a member of the Foundation. He shared his experiences when visiting Africa, meeting a young girl who had been infected by the virus and her need to access medication to slow down the impact of the disease.

The statistic that I was most touched by was that 38% of pregnant women in some areas are infected by Aids and it is only through early detection and intervention, that the chance of this being passed onto the unborn baby can be minimised. Through the work of the Foundation, many young people and their families are being given some hope for their future.

During the evening, our Year 12 presented Mr Willmann with a cheque for $4,712 to support the work of the Foundation. This donation was the amount raised by our Senior School over the past twelve months through the BAC Factor Night, the African Aids Dinner, the 2012 Trivia Night, the Cross Country Gelato Day, the Staff-Students Soccer Match and other events held in the Senior School.

Mr and Mrs Willmann have asked me to thank the students across the College for their continued support of the Foundation and for their commitment to help other people in our world who are in great need.

They are never boring

They are number one!

They make us laugh

With jokes they crack

They wind us up

And then give us back.

Grandparents are special

Grandparents are blest

With them around

Life is the best

What a wonderful day yesterday was when over 300 grandparents and great-grandparents visited our College to celebrate the effort and achievements of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren in the Junior School.

The children of the Junior School loved the opportunity to show “Pop’, ‘Gran’, ‘Nana’, ‘Pa’ and all their grandparents what they are doing at school and to have them visit their classrooms. I thank all of our grandparents and great-grandparents for your continued encouragement, support and prayers for the students in our school.

I would like to thank Mr Russell Matheson (Federal Member for Macarthur) for joining us for Grandparents Day. In his address, Mr Matheson acknowledged the role that grandparents play in supporting their children and grandchildren and the huge contribution they have made, and continue to make, in our community. He also acknowledged the level of respect that our young people have for their grandparents and the special bond and relationships between a grandparent and their grandchildren.

SENIOR SCHOOL CONCERT BANDS EISTEDDFOD

Congratulations to the students in the Senior School Concert Band for their great performance at the Sydney Eisteddfod on Tuesday evening, 21 May. This competition attracts the concert bands from some of the most prestigious schools in Sydney and our band is commended on the quality of their performance at this event

Band members value the opportunity to perform at events such as these and appreciate the opportunity to gain feedback from some of the leading adjudicators in Sydney. They performed a 15 minute program with Jazz It Up, Highlights from Les Miserables, and Aztec Fire. It was the first time that the band has contested an Eisteddfod outside of the Macarthur region and it was an excellent opportunity to play in one of Sydney's premier acoustic auditoriums.

THE CHAMBER SINGERS PERFORM AT THE SYDNEY EISTEDDFOD

On Wednesday 22 May, the Chamber Singers competed in the McDonalds Sydney Eisteddfod. The Chamber Singers entered into two events; first was the Youth Choral Award and the second was the Youth Sacred Choral Award. The pieces they sang were, Omnia Sol, Prayer of the Children, Idyll of Praise and So High the Price. This year's competition was tougher than ever and was a very fought out and contested Eisteddfod. Unfortunately, the Chamber Singers did not place, however, they did represent Broughton extremely well. They sang to the best of their ability and, most importantly, they glorified and honoured the Lord.

HICES DEBATING (ROUND 3)

On Wednesday, the HICES Debating Junior, Middles and Senior Teams left school for the extremely long journey down to Shoalhaven Anglican College in Milton with Miss Koeller and Mr Allard for their Round 3 debates.

The Junior Team were debating ‘That electronic games should be banned for children under 13’ and won the very close debate. The Middles also claimed victory over their opponents. Meanwhile, the Seniors received their topic and prepared for their debate later in the evening. While the Senior Team presented some interesting arguments, they lost their round to Wollondilly. Well done to all teams!

A big thank you to Mr Webster for driving us, to parents who were able to make the trip down to support the Broughton teams and to Mr Allard and Miss Koeller for their commitment to Debating.

P & F GENERAL MEETING – TUESDAY 28 MAY

I encourage parents to attend the P & F General Meeting to be held on Tuesday 28 May 2013 in the IRC commencing at 7.30 pm. Our Chair of Council, Reverend Nigel Fortescue, will be the special guest at the meeting giving a presentation on the role of Schools Council. This evening would be a good opportunity for parents to gain an insight to the way in which the school is governed and the dedication and commitment of Schools Council members. At the meeting, Mrs Halloran will also give some details of changes to the Junior School reports.

WORKING BEE – SATURDAY 1 JUNE

Please put Saturday 1 June in your diary if you haven’t already done so and join us at the Term 2 Working Bee. Remember “Many hands make light work” and the Workings Bees are always a time of great collegiality as well as getting many jobs around the College done.

Some of the jobs outlined for the day include:

1. Painting Bench Seats for outside of Junior School Classrooms, Prep entrance. 2. Gardening - tidying up gardens 3. Pressure washing various areas of the College eg Outside of Canteen, Junior Classrooms, COLA area. 4. Wash Mini Bus 5. Reposition School Signs 6. Remove old Netball posts

I am delighted that we have been able to organise Child Minding at the Working Bee from 8.30 am to 1.30 pm in our OSHC Centre. Thank you Mrs Staples, our OSHC Coordinator, who has volunteered to do this. We hope this will allow parents with small children who would otherwise be unable to be involved, to attend.

JUNIOR SCHOOL CARPARK

The College continues to be committed to ensuring the safety of our students and their families as our Number 1 priority. Parents may have noticed the blitz that the Senior Executive has been having in the Junior School Carpark monitoring the flow of traffic and parking. We thank parents for the encouragement and support that we have received for this.

I am still concerned that we have a very small number of parents who are stopping in ‘No Parking Zones’ or in positions which hinder the flow of traffic. One area of particular concern is when cars are parked in the space between the car park entry and the Kindergarten rooms. I am concerned at the possibility of these cars being hit as other drivers enter the car park. May I ask that all parents use designated car parking spaces or the Kiss and Drop Zone to drop off their children.

MISS COLLETTE VAN BREDA – Year 3 Teacher

I was born in Caringbah, Sydney and live in the beautiful town of Austinmer. I attend Austinmer Anglican Church where I actively take part in the Children’s and Music Ministry. I have attended local schools and graduated high school with great opportunities. I have always wanted to become a teacher and was delighted to have the choice of studying Primary Education at either Sydney or Wollongong University. A lifestyle choice persuaded me to study at Wollongong, where I met some amazing teachers and made life-long friends.

Over the past few years I have had some incredible teaching experiences. I have worked in various schools in the Wollongong area and have been at the forefront of some innovative teaching practices. I have worked as a support teacher assisting students who are struggling as well as a classroom teacher, teaching a composite 3/4 class.

I am so excited to be a part of the Broughton Anglican College Team and I feel privileged to be a part of the opportunities this College gives to each of its students. I am also thrilled that I can share the story of Jesus in my classroom on a daily basis!

JUNIOR SCHOOL MRS C HALLORAN- HEAD OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

Well, admittedly it was a cold, wet day for our Grandparents yesterday. The weather did not dampen spirits, however, with the visitors and students enjoying a wonderful morning together. The Grandparents thoroughly enjoyed the concert which highlighted the musical talents of many of our students. After a delicious morning tea, prepared by our lovely parent helpers, it was time to visit classrooms. There were some great activities happening including; painting, origami, puzzles and more. I also saw many grandparents enjoying games and listening to stories on the interactive white boards. A huge thanks to the many grandparents who braved the weather to come and visit. We will be putting a photo

display in the office and I am sure teachers will include some photos on their class blogs.

SOCIAL GROUPS

Last week in the newsletter, I mentioned our Better Buddies program as we look at ways to promote positive interactions between our students. This week, I have asked Mrs Bines (2C) and Mrs Rudder (TALD) to write about the social groups they run during the week.

K-2 Club (Lunchtime on Mondays and Tuesdays outside Mrs Allard’s Classroom) is for those children who benefit from a smaller and more secure lunchtime play environment. During K-2 Club the children are able to socialise together with the added benefit of having a teacher close by. They engage in activities such as ball play, Lego, playdough, car games, stamping, tracing and drawing. Children are invited by their class teacher to be a part of this group. The children are free to invite a friend to come along. Helpful feedback and comments are relayed back to teachers from time to time where necessary with the aim of nurturing and supporting positive friendships and social play skills.

Mrs Bines (Year 2 Class Teacher)

Commencing in late Term 1 TALD began two new Playground initiatives for students to participate in:

Active Play: students play outdoor game activities supervised by a member of TALD and peer role models who volunteer on the day. This is held each Tuesday at lunch time near the COLA on the Junior School oval.

Organised Play: students are selected and asked to bring a friend and to come on Thursday lunch time to play board games in the After School Care Centre.

The concept of both programs is how we play games for fun leading in to socially acceptable strategies for coping with not winning. We talk about how it is fun to play games with our friends. We are happy when we play together. When we finish playing we say something friendly to each other like “Thank you that was a good game!” Our friend would say “Thank you I like playing games with you!” back to us. This makes you happy and your friends and they will want to play again. The games would be introduced and rules explained. These rules will be actively role played and modeled correctly during play session. Students are given a chance to practice them when staff or peer role models interact with groups. Staff will model an incorrect response and have the students help resolve the situation moving from group to group. Five games will be in play at one time. We also play a group game where students can have a turn leading the play -for example games such as “What’s the time Mr. Wolf?”.

Throughout each session, staff model positive interactions and monitor play so it is a successful experience for all. During each play session emphasis is placed on:

• encouraging others; • playing by the rules; • playing for fun and ending play on a positive note “Good game!”.

Last Thursday we were playing Snakes and Ladders and someone landed on the longest snake and went back to the beginning, well before I could act, a fellow student decided to help out and gave them a hug and repeated “Don’t worry it’s only a game, don’t be sad!”. It made my day!

PARENTS' GUIDES TO THE NEW NSW SYLLABUSES INCORPORATING AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM

Resources to support parents in understanding the new NSW K–10 syllabuses incorporating Australian curriculum are now available free on the Board’s NSW syllabuses for the Australian curriculum website.

The resources provide clear and important messages about the four new syllabuses: English; Mathematics; Science and Technology; and History.

The first resource is a video presentation that many schools have used during parent meetings at their schools.

A brochure is also provided which contains additional information for parents.

The Parents’ Guide to the new NSW K–10 syllabuses provides an excellent summary of:

• the nature of Australian curriculum; • how it will be implemented in NSW schools; • when the new NSW syllabuses incorporating Australian curriculum will be taught in NSW; • what children will learn at school using the new syllabuses; • cross curriculum priorities and general capabilities.

CHAPLAINS CORNER

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have to go to the dam and carry your water for the day back to your house? Personally, I don’t think I can really imagine what it is like.

Insebenzwenhle Primary School does not have a pump for running water and have asked for our assistance in getting one.

Let’s make it fun as we raise money! On Tuesday 28 May, the Junior School will be having a Crazy Hat & Sock Day as a time to raise some money for this water pump. Students must come to school and leave school in their full school uniform, but are invited to bring a crazy hat or change into some crazy socks for the school day.

Students are being charged $1 per item, however, if people would like to make further contributions, they are very welcome. Students are encouraged to not just take money from their parents for this, but to consider using their own pocket money as well.

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF THE SENIOR SCHOOL 7-12

We have just finished another very busy week, allowing plenty of opportunities for students to be involved within the College community. The Year 12 African Aids fundraising dinner was a wonderful evening of fun and enjoyment especially being able to dress up as their favourite movie or TV star, but it was also a chance for our Year 12 students to be informed about the poverty and plight of many African children born into families of HIV/Aids suffers and/or an environment whereby these young children have contracted Aids. We heard about a girl younger than our Year 12’s who had been raped and then later died from Aids. The evening was a chance for the students to raise awareness and to raise money to support the African

Aids foundation. A cheque for over $4000 was presented to our special guest Mr Bruce Willman, one of the directors of the foundation. I would like to thank Mrs Clipsham, Mrs Noakes and Mr Margin for coordinating this event along with the Year 12 Dinner Committee and also thanks to the Year 11 Hospitality classes under the guidance of Mrs Clipsham, Mrs Clarke and Mrs Duncan for preparing and serving us on the night, and to Mr Freestone for volunteering to be the DJ.

Next week is the last chance to book your table for the College Trivia Night being held on Wednesday 29 May. Who can beat the teachers!! – come and try. The Prefects have been working very hard to bring this event together and I ask that you support them in this by coming on the night. I really need to know final numbers by Tuesday this week so that I can decide on the most appropriate venue to hold it. Could students see Abbey Bowling on Monday or Tuesday next week?

I would like to remind all students that Monday 27 May is the Athletics Carnival and is a compulsory attendance day. Rolls will be marked on the day. I would like to thank Mr Strong and the House Prefects for their organisation of this event. Unfortunately I am away at a Deputies’ Inservice but hope to get there for a little while.

Our College Musical, the Wizard of Oz, is progressing really well and a lot of hard work has already been undertaken. Students, I would like to encourage you to come and support your peers for what should be an excellent event.

If there are any parents who would be keen to help in some way, especially with serving supper at the performances of the musical could you please contact Mrs Sue Cartledge on 0410 476 824 or Mrs Sally Gillam on 0412 060 821. They also need people to donate cakes, slices or cookies. They will put them on our roster when it best suits them. They would welcome all who would like to help.

YEAR 10 SUBJECT SELECTIONS

It is nearly June and time for Year 10 to begin thinking about the subjects they would like to study for the HSC, that is Year 11 in 2014, HSC 2015! So that students are aware of what is involved in each subject and so that they might ask questions of the Heads of Faculties, on Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 May Year 10 will be attending a range of seminars with each faculty area. These seminars will take place during the normal school day. Following that time of information gathering, Year 10 and their parent/s will attend the Year 11 2014 Subject Selection evening on Tuesday 4 June in the Hall where the subject survey forms will be handed out and parents with their students will be given the information needed to make those important decisions. Each faculty will have a display and representatives who will be only too happy to answer questions you might have about their subjects. Mrs Wiseman, the Careers Advisor, will also be in attendance.

BRAINSTORM – AWARD WINNING IN SCHOOL PERFORMANCES.

On Tuesday 4 June 2013 (Periods 1 and 2,) Brainstorm Productions will be presenting ‘The Hurting Game,’ for Years 7 and 8. The show is about peer pressure and being ‘true to yourself’.

This is an entertaining way to promote discussion about friendship, peer pressure, bullying, body image, our cyber footprint and the way we interact at school and on digital media.

This show will assist students to recognise and resist peer pressure and help create a more positive school environment.

EXCURSIONS

YEAR 12 HOSPITALITY

On 20 May the Year 12 Hospitality class visited the Coffee School at Haymarket and the Fish Market at Pyrmont. Despite the cool weather and an early start, when we arrived at Coffee School we were given our own espresso machine and quickly learned the technique for making the product from the world’s second most traded commodity. The Coffee Bean! 150 billion people enjoy that caffeinated warm cup of ‘goodness’ world-wide daily. Once we had mastered the basic skills of grinding, tamping, a single ‘shot’, ‘stretching the milk’, ‘banging on the knock box, and then we progressed to

decorating our finished product with beautiful ‘art works’ such as leaves, hearts and faces to name but a few.

After a quick light rail journey we arrived at the Sydney Fish Markets at Pyrmont where we personally enjoyed sushi, oysters and some ‘classic’ fish and chips before completing our research on the abundance and variety of seafood available for the Hospitality industry to access daily. The most expensive seafood available at Monday’s

market was live King Crab at a whopping $89.00 per kilogram.

Overall we had a great day full of brilliant learning experiences and we are looking forward to continue practicing our coffee making and café art in the weeks ahead in the commercial kitchen classroom.

YEAR 7 HUMANITIES

Year 7 had their annual excursion into Campbelltown as a part of the Humanities course. Below are three responses from each class about the day and some photos:

On Wednesday 1 May 2013, Year 7 went on an excursion to Campbelltown. This excursion was prepared for us to learn about the local history and geography of Campbelltown as part of the Humanities lessons. At Park Central we met Mr Main who taught us how to draw a map and field sketch of a part of Park Central.

This excursion was an excellent opportunity to learn about Campbelltowns’ local history and geography. Thank you to our teachers for a wonderful day.

All Year 7 visited various places in the Campbelltown area to learn about the heritage of the region. We split into classes upon arrival and walked to our different destinations. We went and saw the H J Daley Library, the Park Central development, the Quondong schoolhouse, Campbelltown Arts Centre and Koshigaya Park.

This excursion helped us understand the Campbelltown suburb and its history in more depth. We thank Miss Davidson and all our guides. We thoroughly enjoyed the day!

By Theodora Shabaya 7WI

Our trip to Koshigaya Park was very fun and it was interesting to learn about the history of Campbelltown as well as the people who played a significant role in the development of Campbelltown. At Park Central we did some field sketches. My friends and I got the chance to sit at the teachers table during recess and lunch. Overall, it was a great day.

THE WIZARD OF OZ

The College is excited to continue the wonderful tradition of producing high quality musicals which have included Godspell (2009), The Sound of Music (2010), and Oliver! (2011). June 19-22 will see five performances of The Wizard of Oz (RSC) based on the classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which tells the story of Dorothy Gale, a Kansas farm girl who dreams of a better place, “over the rainbow”, and who, in the company of the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man and Scarecrow, encounters many adventures on her journey along the Yellow Brick Road. In 2013 over 100 students from Years 5 to 11 will be on stage in the Cast as well as more students in the Orchestra than we have ever had, and not to forget the large support crew in backstage, lighting, sound, and other technical and design/construction areas. We look forward to the support of the whole College in attending a performance of this family-friendly musical.

WRITER OF THE WEEK

Congratulations to this week’s winner of Writer of the Week. This week’s entry is from Jasmin Wagner of Year 9 highlighting her protagonist’s emotional loss.

“Jonathan held the small, crudely wrapped bundle that was his son. His small red face was pinched and he wondered as he stared down at him, how can anything so small create so much damage? This child was considerably smaller than any he had ever seen, and Emily had lost a lot of blood.

“He’s perfect” she murmured. “Call him Seth.”

She sighed even as she weakened. “Now you won’t blame him will you? Swear.”

Even as she breathed her last he whispered “I swear.”

Mr A Allard - GAT Coordinator PRAYER POINTS

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME

Our school registered to take part in the National Simultaneous Storytime again this year. The three Kindergarten classes came to the IRC to listen to and read “The Wrong Book” by Nick Bland at precisely the same time as school libraries and public libraries all over Australia.

The story, The Wrong Book by Nick Bland, was brought to life by using an iPad app of the book projected onto the interactive whiteboard. Discussion of the characters and story followed after which students were provided with paper craft activities.

GRANDPARENT’S DAY IN THE IRC

Many Grandparents braved the elements to come over to the IRC, look at books and purchase a book to donate to our collection dedicated to their Grandchild. When the books are processed these children will be the first to borrow and enjoy them. Over $1800 worth of books were donated to the IRC and we thank the Grandparents for their wonderful generosity.
