November Citizenship Theme First Amendment Rights & Responsibilities In the Classroom

The Founders of the Constitution considered freedom of expression very important. They believed that the right to have and express

one’s beliefs was essential to being a responsible citizen. Students at PLS have the right to express their opinions in respectful and

responsible ways in the classroom.

November Citizenship Theme First Amendment Rights & Responsibilities In the Classroom

The freedom to assemble peaceably is protected by the First Amendment. This practice is demonstrated in our monthly citizenship assemblies where we share information about

democratic principles.

November Citizenship ThemeFirst Amendment Rights & Responsibilities In the Classroom

The founders of the Constitution believed strongly that everyone has a right to his or her own religious beliefs. The protection of

religious freedom demonstrates that government should not interfere with religion. We learned that some Mexican families celebrate Dia de los Muertos. It is a religious celebration that

remembers loved ones who have died.

November Citizenship ThemeFirst Amendment Rights & Responsibilities In the Classroom

Freedom to petition is the right to ask the government to change laws. Ms. Tan shared with the third graders her petition to the city council to be able to have chickens

within the Cedar Falls city limit.

Freedom of the press is protected by the First Amendment. We learned that the newspapers and TV provide us with

information about candidates so people can vote for government officials.
