The following DOCUMENT contains selected works by CARINA SAMANTHA SANTOS created between the years 2006-2011, comprising a more or less accurate representation of her range and capacity as a designer & visual artist.

She makes a lot of other things in her spare time, too. Mostly, though, she likes to read, watch television, and look up things on the Internet.

Art and literature have been very big parts of my life, with my interest in both starting from childhood. I grew up in an artistic household, and I grew up with a lot of books. I see design as the bridge that brings them together.

My eye is trained towards beauty, and I see it in a lot of things. Most of my work reflects daily inspirations, the pieces that I make are often directly rooted from personal experiences, translated and edited to make it more relatable to other people. It’s personal, but I try to make it work in the context of other people’s experiences.

I am influenced by a lot of artists, authors and designers, a lot of people, a lot of music, and I feel that this varied mix of inspirations comes across my work. I love popular culture and history. I love art, television, film, and literature. I try to experiment with a lot of media and I like bringing them together.

I am wildly curious about the world and our connections as people who live in it. My art, my design, and my writing try to communicate my personhood to others, to be able to connect with them.

I try to touch people with humor and feeling, and I try to do this with the things that I make with my hands.

Life Plan is an exercise for a Typography Class in Junior year, with the brief of creating a series of visual collages depicting the year, five years, and so on, after the student’s graduation. Using a series of pre-selected typefaces, the student was expected to create a specific narrative of his imagined future. The student was also given layout and design restrictions (e.g. images must be square and placed 1/2” from the top and side margins, type color) and was expected to work within those restrictions.

PROJECT DETAILS:• oil Painting

(left: oRiginal iMage)

Sleeping Fawns is a first attempt at oil painting. After seeing a photograph of stillborn fawns over the Internet, I decided to try my hand at oil painting.

In the middle of the process, I saw the finale of the television series, Work of Art, and was surprised when one of the finalists, Peregrine Honig, turned out to be the original artist of the photograph I copied this off of.

The painting is 3 feet x 3 feet and was rendered using a scaled grid, pencil (illustration), and oil.

about the bees & alphabetphotography book, 2011

PROJECT DETAILS:• layoUt• PhotogRaPhy• tyPogRaPhy

About the Bees & Alphabet is a photographic account of a fictional band on tour, created after the news of The White Stripes’ break-up. As an homage to the work of Autumn de Wilde (Elliott Smith, Under Great White Northern Lights), Explosions in the Sky (tour photos on http://explosionsinthesky.com), and Nicholas Zinner (I Hope You Are All Happy Now), About the Bees & Alphabet is an exercise in recreating the same on-the-road feel of the photos, creating layouts that try to communicate ideas and moods using only heavy visuals and sparse text.

the sketchbook projectsketchbook, 2011

PROJECT DETAILS:• collage

The Sketchbook Project is a worldwide project spearheaded by Art House Co-op (Brooklyn, NY) that challenges participants to fill up a Moleskine journal with sketches that pertain to a certain theme. They then organize touring exhibits that showcase the journals all over the United States.

Works done for this journal were made loosely based on the theme things that changed other things and were mostly done overnight, so as to beat the deadline. It was an interesting exercise of resourcefulness, while attempting to make each spread look different from one another.
