Topical Training MaterialsTwelve classroom-style training modules include facilitator guides, participant guides and PowerPoint presentations. Each module can be completed in approximately 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. Topics include:

Talk: • Communicating with Style (for supervisors)Providing Effective Feedback • (for supervisors)Coaching Professional Boundaries • (for supervisors)Preventing Medication Diversion • (for supervisors)

Although many states conduct background checks on caregivers,

abuse and neglect still occur. Why? Experience shows us that many caregivers respond poorly in challenging situations, sometimes resulting in neglect or even abuse. Often the inappropriate responses are due to lack of training.

The Caregiver Abuse and Neglect Prevention Project, through its website, offers about 25 hours of multi-media, ready-made training material. Topical training materials may be downloaded from the project website where a DVD/CD set is also available by mail.

Experiential Training MaterialsThe DVD/CD set presents six video scenarios based on common incidents of abuse, neglect and misappropriation of property. Participants view a scenario, discuss ways that the misconduct could have been prevented and then watch a final scene in which the caregiver responds appropriately. The DVD/CD packet also contains trainer’s guides and related handouts. Each scenario can be completed in about one hour.

Who should attend the training?Participants may include direct caregivers, supervisors and managers in long-term care settings such as nursing homes, assisted living, home health, personal care agencies, etc. The training is appropriate for caregivers of both elderly persons and those with cognitive/developmental disabilities. Although the topics do not directly address family caregivers, many may gain new insights and approaches in caring for loved ones.

Who can present the training?Experienced trainers with background in long-term health care are ideal presenters. The trainer’s guides also offer training suggestions, and the website offers tips for presenting both Experiential and Topical Materials.

How much does the training cost? All topical training materials are downloadable pdf files, which are free of charge. The DVD/CD set may be ordered through the website for a minimal shipping and handling fee.
