G C STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Panayiota Yiallouri – F5
What subjects have you selected at
IGCSE level?
As a person with a fond connection and
attraction to History, my top choice could
not have been anything else apart from
History. Moreover, I was convinced to go
for the powerful combination of
Geography and Economics, which I
certainly do not regret. Additionally, as an
individual that is interested in constantly
learning foreign languages, I selected
IGCSE French. Before settling with these
choices I found myself in the dilemma of
leaving something out and choosing
English Literature; a choice that would
satisfy my desire of enriching my
vocabulary and analytical and critical
thinking skills. As a result, I decided to
have an additional IGCSE and therefore I
also do English Literature with a private
tutor.
What subjects will you select at A-
level?
Well, this is a tough choice, since some of
my current subjects have to be dismissed.
After a lot of thought, I feel that the best
selections for me are going to be History,
Economics and Maths for A-Level and
Geography at AS- level. As far as French
is concerned, I am considering of doing
external examinations throughout the
summer. Unfortunately, I feel that I will
leave behind English Literature despite
being a subject I truly enjoy. The reason
is that due to that fact the A-Levels I am
selecting are already challenging, I do not
want to take the risk and add another
burden that may potentially risk any
University offer.
Have you carried out any work
experience?
Last summer I carried out an internship
at the Parliament of Cyprus which
convinced me of what I truly want to do in
the future. At a younger age, I was
thinking of studying law but when I
worked at a lawyer’s office, I realised that
it was something considerably interesting

but not what I yearned to do for the rest
of my life. Moreover, this year I am part of
a working group in the European
Parliament that develops strategies and
campaigns on how to make Europe
welcoming and inclusive.
Are you involved in any extra-
curricular activities?
Fortunately or unfortunately I am a very
active person that never settles down, so
this could be an ongoing list. But to keep
things short I will point out my
participation in several research teams
and me representing Cyprus at European
Parliament Conferences. Furthermore, I
certainly ought to mention my love for
Model United Nations events both in
Cyprus and abroad as well as European
Youth Parliament. In the school
environment, among my favourite clubs
are the Current Affairs Society and Girl-
Up Club but my list goes on for another
12 clubs or so. Most importantly, an
“activity” I was honoured to do was the
opportunity I had to take part in last
year’s Greek Drama Club which staged
“The Diary of Anne Frank”.
What degree do you aspire to study in
the future?
Since I want to become a diplomat to
travel the world and at a later stage a
politician in Cyprus, I aspire to study
Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE),
but due to my love for History, I will also
apply for History and Politics.

Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences
Brno, in the Czech Republic.

science behind animals is something that
I find truly fascinating.
Words of Wisdom
“Never give up on something you can’t go
a day without thinking about. “
G C TEACHER SPOTLIGHT
Katerina Charalambous – Mathematics
Teacher
How long have you been working at our
school?
I have been working at our school since
2006. I am truly blessed to work in such
a professional and pleasant environment.
I hope to continue working for this school
for a long time.
What is your favourite thing about
teaching?
There are many things to enjoy about
being a teacher. One of the most enjoyable
things about teaching is the satisfaction
you get when you realise that you actually
are an inspiration for your students.
Every day in a teacher’s life is never
boring nor the same. It is very fulfilling
interacting with the students who are full
of energy, enthusiasm, and eagerness to
learn. It is really rewarding to see how
students improve and become better
individuals. You feel like you have really
done something wonderful.
How did you decide that a degree in
Mathematics was the course for you?
That was an easily made decision. I only
had one passion in my school life:
MATHS, so I knew that this would be my
field of study. Mathematics is a powerful
tool with many applications, which can
lead to many career opportunities. While
it can be very challenging at times, the
study of mathematics can bring a
tremendous sense of accomplishment (my
further mathematics students know this
feeling).
Any words of wisdom?
I believe that ‘everything happens for a
reason’, whether it’s in terms of an
experience or for a lesson you have to
learn.

STUDIES IN IRELAND
The higher education system in Ireland
consists of the university sector,
institutes of technology and private
independent colleges. The entry
requirements for international students to
higher education are determined
individually by each institution and are
generally based on national examination
performance and English language
aptitude.
Tuition fees will be paid by the Higher
Education Authority (HEA) for Irish / EU
nationals entering third level for the first
time and who have been ordinarily
resident in the EU for at least 3 years. You
only need to pay a student contribution
fee of €3,000 to cover non-tuition student
services such as examination entry fees,
support for student services and support
for student clubs and societies.
Applications are made via the Central
Applications Office (CAO) and all
applications are made online. Entry
requirements for courses may vary from
year to year, depending on the number of
places available on each course and the
number of applicants, so there is a great
deal of competition for the more popular
programmes. Students who take GCE A-
levels and IGCSEs will be graded using a
scoring system.

Prospective students register with the
CAO on their website www.cao.ie,
receiving an application number that they
can use to log in to their account.
As well as personal information,
applicants will need to submit their
Qualification and Assessment Details.
This is the section where you’ll need to
provide your school qualifications. Irish
universities are familiar with other
country’s school leaver qualifications
– just tick the relevant box under
Qualification & Assessment Summary
when first registering to apply.
If you are applying for assessment based
solely on your GCE/GCSE qualifications,
you must provide details of examinations
already taken and any examinations yet to
be taken in the year of application.
Supporting documentation must also be
provided to CAO.
There is a separate box for your hobbies.
Candidates have 500 characters to
indicate any hobbies related to their
application. This information is only
required if you are applying on the basis
of mature years.
After fulfilling all of the above, applicants
are able to include their Course Choices.
You choose by course code and are able to
include a maximum of 10 choices on both
course lists.
The deadline to apply to universities in
Ireland is always February 1 of the year
that you will start the course.
