Greetings All As everyone gears up for their final run

through to the end of the year, career

projects are coming thick and fast.

The new Australian Apprenticeship

Pathways site was launched. It is a vast

improvement on earlier efforts bringing

together apprenticeship and traineeship

information in one place.

This month I try to demystify TAFE for

you. I worked in the vocational training

sector for almost 20 years. It has the

potential to be THE cool, agile, “go to”

place for skills for 21st Century Careers.

Visionary management will be the key to

its success in the accelerating economy.

Most of my blog posts this month are

aimed at making the transition from

year 12 easier.

My other focus this month is careers

resources. There is a truck load of them.

Cheers for now. Hope you have a great

break.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING THE SUPPLY AND DEMAND STORY

There was a 46% growth in university commencements from 2008 - 2015.

There was no matching growth in the number of employment opportunities for graduates.

The VET sector has experiences a 41% decrease in apprentice and trainee enrolments over the same period.

Now VET graduates are more likely to find a job in their field after graduation. The Foundation for Young Australians says it takes 4.7 years for a graduate to find a job in their field.

$$$$ EXPENSIVE V AFFORDABLE $$$$

Government money goes to developing skills where there is a skills shortage.

Check HERE to find jobs where there is high demand and courses that are heavily

subsidised.

By adjusting your course choice just a little bit you may be able to save yourself a lot of

money.

Government doesn’t subsidise

training for chimney sweeps.

Government prioritizes funding for high

demand skills like IT, engineering and

logistics.

WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP OR TRAINEESHIP? An apprenticeship or traineeship is a job. It includes A TRAINING CONTRACT between an

employer and an employee in which the apprentice or trainee learns the skills needed

for a particular occupation or trade.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN APPRENTICESHIP AND TRAINEESHIP

Traineeships can be full-time or part-time employment, usually for around 12

months and generally in a non-trade related area.

Apprenticeships are usually full time, in trade areas and last three to four years.

AUSTRALIAN APPRENTICESHIPS PATHWAY WEBSITE

The AAPathways website provides a broad range of Australian Apprenticeships

information and resources including:

Sample job and training descriptions, i

industry based job pathway charts and

Practice aptitude quizzes.

For more information go HERE

19

HOW TO GET AN APPRENTICESHIP OR TRAINEESHIP In order to become an apprentice or trainee a person must find an employer who:

Needs more staff

Is willing to accept responsibility for training the new employee.

This is usually done with the help of Australian Apprenticeship Support Network service

provider. Find a Support Network Provider in your area.

The new Australian Apprenticeships Pathways site has a section for job hunters.

APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS AT SCHOOL

A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship combines:

part-time, practical experience in the workplace

training with a TAFE or training provider

school studies

A school-based apprenticeship will give you credit towards your WA Certificate of

Education.

School based apprentices and trainees are at least 15 years of age. They:

Sign a training contract with an employer

Get paid while at work

Have the same rights and responsibilities as full time and mature aged

apprentices/trainees.

Usually complete their qualification when they leave school

See the FACT SHEET for STUDENTS for more information

PRE APPRENTICESHIPS If you don't get an apprenticeship you can go to TAFE and do a pre-apprenticeship.

Employers frequently ask lecturers to send out a couple of good students for an

apprenticeship interview.

You can find pre apprenticeship courses HERE.

TIPS FOR PRE APP INTERVIEW SUCCESS

Take a folder of your school reports, resume, references, record of

achievements and photos of work you have done in the field.

Dress in smart casual clothes.

Make sure you know the trade

Make sure you know the level of maths required by the trade.

Smile. Let the interviewers like you

IMPROVING JOB PROSPECTS FOR YOUNG JOB SEEKERS - IVAN NEVILLE WEBINAR

A couple of weeks ago the Career Development Association put on a webinar by Ivan

Neville, from the Department of Employment.

It was Brilliant.

I know I said I would probably go to sleep…. Ivan Neville is a statistician.

But sometimes you just need to get away from the hype to hear what is really going on.

My highlights were:

Page 22: CAREERS NEWSLETTER - Goyder · CAREERS NEWSLETTER OCTOBER ‘17 1 Greetings All As everyone gears up for their final run through to the end of the year, career projects are coming

22

You really need to get a year 12

qualification, or equivalent, to

reduce your chances of

unemployment.

But there isn’t much difference in

employment outcomes between a

degree and a cert III.

There has been a shift towards

degrees and away from vocational

education since 2008.

There are now stronger job

outcomes for vocational

graduates.

Page 23: CAREERS NEWSLETTER - Goyder · CAREERS NEWSLETTER OCTOBER ‘17 1 Greetings All As everyone gears up for their final run through to the end of the year, career projects are coming

23

This was a surprise

Almost three quarters of

employers place as much

or MORE emphasis on

employability skills than

they do on technical skills.

There is more fantastic information for careers educators and those involved with

advising students about their career futures.

You can request a copy of Improving Employment Prospects for Young Job Seekers from
