Careers Expo Wash Up What a fabulous night it was at our bigger, better, brighter Careers Expo held for the first time in the spacious Brother Joseph McAteer Gymnasium! Our sincere thanks to all students, parents and the wider SHC community who attended; without your support we would not be able to attract the broad cross section of presenters and exhibitors who were in attendance on the night. By way of summary, there were; 13 institutions across the tertiary study sector in SA including multiple staff from TAFE and the Uni’s as well as private providers. 13 industry specific groups whose reps had a high level of knowledge and expertise in their particular industry and career group. 12 organisations offering various apprenticeship and traineeship pathways across a broad range of industries and job/ training pathways. 5 organisations who formally organise student exchanges and gap year experiences and our very own VET students, teacher Rebecca Bond and brand new VET co- ordinator Ms Leanne De Young. We always love to welcome back old scholars and were thrilled to have some young old scholars as well as some less recent old scholars enthusiastically giving current students an insight into possible career and study directions as well as some of their personal stories and experience. An event like this takes a lot of co-operation and goodwill across a broad cross section of the College and call upon the help and expertise of people to assist with promotion, setting up, catering, audio visual support, vacating teaching spaces and then packing up (big shout out to Shane's team of boarder helpers!!) The bulk of the organisation was done by the wonderful Ms Annemarie Honner (who usually has things done before I even think of them!!) My heartfelt thanks to all who so generously contributed and helped us before, during or after the event. Scouts SA Leadership Award Elisabeth Beltrame, (OS 2004 – 2006) has been an active leader in Rotary International for over eight years and facilitates the Rotary Youth Leadership and Enrichment Programs. In 2012, Elisabeth established the Rotaract Club of Adelaide City for 18-30 year olds. Last year, she became the youngest President in the District. She has brought to her club fresh ideas and young members with a focus on fundraising for youth and women in developing countries and empowering women through education. Universities Bonus Scheme SATAC administers two bonus points schemes based on rules provided by its member universities. The two schemes are the Universities Equity Scheme and the Universities Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme. The Universities Equity Scheme awards 5 bonus points for eligible students, and the Universities Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme awards 2 or 4 points for eligible students. An individual student can receive a maximum of 9 bonus points under both schemes. Any bonuses will be added to the university aggregate from which selection ranks are calculated. The selection rank will then be the ATAR which corresponds to the revised aggregate.

Individual Bonuses through Universities Equity Scheme Students will be able to make an application under the Scheme to demonstrate their individual disadvantage. Students will be eligible under the Scheme where, during the year they gain their ATAR: • they or their parents are in receipt of a Commonwealth means-tested income support payment, or • they or their parents are the holders of a Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card, or • they are the holder of a School Card (under the Government of South Australia’s School Card scheme).

Details of students who receive an individual equity bonus will be stored by SATAC so that they can receive their equity bonus in future applications (while they are still eligible to apply on the basis of their year 12 studies).

Harry Long, Chief Commissioner, Scouts SA presented Elisabeth Beltrame with the Scouts SA Leadership Award

Application for individual bonuses Students can apply for consideration under the Universities Equity Scheme when completing your 2017 Undergraduate application from the SATAC website. Applications for the Scheme will not be available from the universities’ websites. For more information about individual bonuses read our frequently asked questions. Universities Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme The Universities Language, Literacy and Mathematics Bonus Scheme encourages students to strengthen their preparation for undergraduate studies by undertaking a language other than English, or specified English and Mathematics subjects. The Scheme will apply to all courses offered by Charles Darwin University, Flinders University, the University of Adelaide, University of South Australia, Tabor College of Higher Education and Torrens University Australia except: Charles Darwin University • 114831 Bachelor of Clinical Sciences/Doctor of Medicine

Flinders University • 214941 Bachelor of Clinical Sciences/Doctor of Medicine

The University of Adelaide • 314552 Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery • 314553 Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery (Bonded Medical place) • 324491 Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience)

(The Scheme does not apply to courses offered by CQ University Australia.) In this Scheme, students will be awarded two points, up to a maximum of four points, for successfully completing a subject in any one of these four categories: • 20 credits of a LOTE in the Languages Learning Area (two 10 credit Australian indigenous language subjects

can be paired in lieu of a 20 credit LOTE). Please note that the subject Language and Culture does not attract a bonus.

• 2ESH20 English or 2ELS20 English Literary Studies. • 2MHS20 Mathematical Methods. • 2MSC20 Specialist Mathematics.

Successful completion is defined as gaining an Overall Grade of C- or better. Because the Scheme is designed to encourage enrolments in these subjects rather than reward outcomes, no higher bonuses will be granted for higher achievement. Useful Links At recent parent information evenings around subject selections, I referred to some of the following material and have therefore included the links to help with discussions that you may have with students. Parent talking career choices is a government publication that may have some useful hints for parents to assist with decision making on future pathways. My future is a government website which is free to register and gives a range of information on careers, courses, industry and labour force. Previously available as a hard copy for all students, this online version contains SA university pre requisites & assumed knowledge as well as a host of other information Tertiary Entrance Booklet 2018, 2019, 2020 Links to Adelaide Open Day information (including all 3 SA major Universities) plus possible questions and topics related to Open Days http://www.openday.com.au/calendar/adelaide/

UniSA College and Foundation Studies (If you’re not quite ready for Uni or haven’t achieved a high enough ATAR) It is an exciting time for Year 12 students as they make preparations for finishing school and transitioning to the next phase of their lives. For students wanting to go to university it means completing their SATAC applications for courses/programs at university in 2018.

Students may consider including backup preferences in their application when appropriate. Students could include either UniSA College Diplomas or Foundation Studies or both programs as their final preferences on their SATAC application. All UniSA College programs provide students with an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge needed for degree study, in a highly supportive environment. Students build their confidence before transitioning into a degree as an experienced university student. UniSA College offers the Foundation Studies program through regional campuses in Whyalla and Mount Gambier. Similarly students have the ability to study one of their four Diploma programs or Foundation Studies through the metropolitan campus. By successfully completing a two-year Diploma in Arts, Business, Health or Science and Technology students can gain direct entry into the second year of a range of UniSA Bachelor degrees with up to 8 courses credit.

Work Experience for 2017 BEFORE CONSIDERING WORK EXPERIENCE PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING:

It is a legal requirement that prior to commencing Work Experience students are inducted in the following areas: Work Health & Safety Act 2012, Equal Opportunity and the Children’s Protection Act 1993. Adequate time (approximately 5 hours) should be allocated to cover these topics effectively and students need to demonstrate their understanding. This induction is done by the school and is consistent with our Duty of Care to ensure that no student is placed where they may not be safe physically or psychologically.

In addition to this, the Work Experience Form must be signed by the student, workplace provider, parent/guardian (all arranged by the student) and finally the principal (arranged by the school). (The original (copies or faxes are unacceptable) Work Experience Agreement Form then becomes a legal contract which sets the school insurance cover in place and must be retained by the school).

The school must also provide a contact person who is responsible for each student for the duration of their placement.

Work Experience is a very valuable opportunity for most students however, it does take time to ensure that the above expectations are met. We are happy to accommodate students in the times allocated. Please do not cause yourself or the College embarrassment by making other arrangements and then asking for exceptions to be made.

Students who wish to do Work Experience during 2017 are advised that the dates are:

9th - 13th October Deadline for paperwork 4th September 4th - 8th December Deadline for paperwork 6th November Work or job trials are not sanctioned by SA Work Experience guidelines. Please note this is general Work Experience only. Students undertaking a Vet program will need to organise their Vet work placement with the Vet Office.
