Getting the Most out of a Career FairThroughout a career fair, students will discover careers they did not know existed, hear professionals talk about work that excites them, and attempt
to persuade others that they are the best candidates for specific jobs and internships. One thing will be consistent: those who are most successful bring a sense of purpose and confidence to their conversations with employers at the fair.
Use these steps to identify your purpose for attending. Once you establish a few goals, confidence will follow!
THINK. 1. How will you know that attending the career fair was a good use of
your time?2. What are you hoping to learn at the career fair that would be hard to
find out using other methods?3. How would you like to be remembered by those you meet?
ACT. 1. Follow the tips in “Career Fair Success: Before, During and After”,
published in this Career Fair Guide on page 6.2. Watch the “Top 10 Ways to Prepare for a Career Fair” series we’ve
been posting on our YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter accounts. 3. Use the “Career Center Resources to Support Your Career Fair Success”
on page 7 for additional information.

Across the nation, Match is widely recognized for success in preparing low-income students for success in four-year colleges. We offer two post-graduate opportunities – the Match Corps Fellowship, an 11-month service fellowship for individuals interested in committing a year of service to inner-city schools and the Match Teacher Residency, a 2-year program that is widely known for creating unusually effective rookie teachers. Match Corps alumni go on to some of the best law, med and grad schools, to teach, or to other careers in or outside of education, while MTR graduates are highly sought after by charter and turnaround schools across the US and have a 100% job placement rate.
Can’t be at the fair? Come to our post-fair info session from 6:30-7:30 in Soc. Psych. 129 or contact us for more information.
Come learn about how YOU can make a difference! Please contact Ashlie Tyler ([email protected])

During:• Prioritize your time. Visit employers on the top of your list first.
• Use your 10-second introduction, eye contact and firm handshake. Smile!
• Employers won’t have much time at the fair, so lead with information that you think will interest them most.
• Make a note of the representative’s name for follow-up.
• Offer a resume to the recruiter.
• Be curious. Learn more about options you haven’t previously considered. Gather information and follow up with further questions after the event.
• Ask about the hiring timeline and process if the organization is not returning to campus for interviews.
• Take the initiative and engage in meaningful conversation with representatives. They will remember you if they get to know you.
• Make connections and get advice. Doing so will provide you with excellent resources in your career search and decision-making process.
Career Fair Success: Before, During and AfterBefore:• Know yourself and what you want to accomplish by attending the career fair.
• Choose and try on your outfit to be sure it fits and you’re comfortable. Clean everything and iron out the wrinkles.

• Develop and practice a 10-second introduction for yourself. Include your name, academic interests, class year and career goals.
• Prepare specific and general questions to ask.
• Review the floor plan of the fair and prioritize who you will visit first. Decide who you’re willing to wait in line to meet, even if it means visiting fewer employers.
• Print extra copies of your resume.
• Check Duke eRecruiting to see if and when employers are hosting events or interviewing on campus.
After:• Follow up! If you promised to send a resume, send it.
• Send thank-you letters. Include information about your conversation and your interest in the company.• Submit your resume on Duke eRecruiting to apply to jobs and internships.

Top 10 Ways to Prepare for a Career Fair [videos]http://goo.gl/rO38R
Career Fair Employer ListBecome familiar with the employers attending the fair and the hiring needs they have identified. TIP: Take initiative! Ask a recruiter for the best way to find more information (and perhaps an introduction!) if you have an interest in their company that extends beyond what you see listed. http://goo.gl/HmklVI
Career Center Drop-In AdvisingUse a 10-minute conversation to get customized advice as you prepare for the fair.TIP: Ten minutes goes quickly! Prioritize what you’d like to understand before the fair and ask those questions first. You can always come back, and you can always set up an appointment to have longer conversations.http://goo.gl/yOVWS
Resume GuideGo beyond a list of past job descriptions. Use your resume to present your methods, accomplishments and results.TIP: Write a short list of the qualities that you know your reader will be using to distinguish great candidates from the sufficient. Ask someone to read your resume and tell you how he or she would remember you. Make sure they match!http://goo.gl/SkJ8d
Career Center Resources to Support Your Career Fair SuccessOn-Campus Recruiting GuideUnderstand what “OCR” is, and how it works. This is a valuable resource available to Duke undergraduate and graduate students.TIP: Read the student policies and expectations AND the employer policies and expectations. Both provide you valuable information.http://goo.gl/L1coQ
Duke eRecruiting Activate your account to access the one-stop destination for jobs and internships posted by employers who work with the Career Center.TIP: When activating your account, sign up for Career News, the Career Center weekly newsletter.
