• By a show of hands, who would like a good paying job after graduating from college?

• Research shows that students who utilized Career Services since their freshman year in college are 4 times more likely to be employed upon graduation and will earn an average of $5,600 more compared to students who never used career services or waited till their senior year to use Career Services.

• Career Services helps students to get an early jump start in planning their careers such as career exploration and guidance to learn about careers related to majors, and paid summer internships to help students gain work experience related to their majors. Today, employers expect students to not only have good grades but more importantly work experience. 76% of employers that hire college graduates expect students to have gained work experience during college. Internships is what will help you be more marketable to employers. At Highlands, we encourage you to start internships early on in your education, starting the summer after your first year in college. Not only will you gain work experience, but you will be paid for it. The average wage is $16/hour and many employers provide transportation and housing assistance during your internship. The deadlines for applying to most internships are from October to February.

• We will help you create a winning resume and practice your interviewing skills such as your famous elevator pitch? Who knows what an elevator pitch is? It’s a 30- to 60-second commercial or self-introduction about your education, career interests, skills and experience.

• One of the best ways to begin learning about internship opportunities is to attend our Fall career fair. Mark your calendar for Thursday, November 10. This is a great opportunity for freshmen to start exploring careers and gain valuable job search tips from employers, and make connections for summer internships.

• Bring your résumé. We will help you develop a top notch résumé even if you don’t have any work experience. You have free access to Optimal Resume, the #1 resume program used at most major colleges

• Dress is business casual or business suit. Be sure to pack your Sunday’s best clothing when you arrive this fall. Employers favorably comment that NMHU has more freshmen that dress in business suits at our career fairs than other colleges in NM. Dressing up makes a good first impression and show you are already thinking about and preparing for your future career.
