WHY HAVE AN ANNUAL REVIEW?

An annual review allows you the chance to assess the last 12 months and prepare for the challenges ahead. The Thomson Legal Annual Review will ensure that you progress your career internally and allow you to question your short-term and long-term professional goals:

• Should you stay in your current position? • Is it time to move in-house? • Would I benefit from working in London or Overseas?

The high expectations and long-hours culture of modern day lawyers would suggest that we now ‘work to live’. The reality is that many lawyers in the legal sector are no longing fulfilling their potential or are quite simply, not in the role they want to be in.

So why is this?

There are a number of reasons.

Routine, apathy or as is the case in the current market, lawyers are being kept so busy that there is less time to consider if you are indeed happy at work. Your job may have met your needs five years ago or even 12 months ago but is that still the case?

CHANGE LOCATION

STAY IN CURRENT POSITION

MOVE IN-HOUSE

REVIEW YOUR WORKING DAY

Do not fear the unknown. The current legal market is buoyant and if after reviewing your working day you remain unhappy then it is time to consider making a career move.

HAPPINESS

Ask yourself what aspects of your role do you enjoy the most and how much of your day do you spend doing this type of work? Divide your day up into fee-earning and non-fee earning activity if you work in private practice.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY?

The pressures of work often make it difficult to remember what attracted you to your current role in the first place. Take a moment to review your current role and think about what would make it better.

TAKE A STEP BACK

There is no getting away from the fact that lawyers more often than not, work longer hours than other professions. While it comes with the territory, there are options that provide better work/life balance to suit your needs.

CONSIDER YOUR INTERNAL OPTIONS

INTERNAL MOVE

Look at internal vacancies on your intranet or simply discuss an internal

move and your reasons with your

Partner or Manager.

REDUCED HOURS

Many employers will offer reduced hours or flexible working arrangements. It is

important to ask the question, especially if your circumstances

have changed.

ARE YOU HAPPY?

Your happiness should be of paramount

importance. Be mindful that it is significantly

more expensive for your employer to replace you

if you are unhappy.

SECONDMENT

Not only will a secondment add to

your CV, a change of scenery and a

different role for a defined period can be extremely beneficial.

ASSESS YOUR SKILLS

My SkillsAre your skills and expertise in demand in the current market? Are you on the correct career path that will benefit your future internally or

externally?

What can you do to make yourself more marketable?

Do you feel you are effectively planning ahead? PotentialOften this can be the

most enlightening question to ask yourself and that of your current

employer. Are you performing to the best

of your ability?

AimsAt all stages in your

career it is vital to set short, medium and long term career aims and to review your success

rate.

EnvironmentDoes your current working

environment suit you? As law firms and in-house teams grow, companies inevitably change in size and culture.

What do you value most about your current employer? Has this changed

since you started?
