Our hospitals

Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) is located in the

city centre. It provides the majority of Children’s services and offers a wide range of

specialities, spanning 11 ward areas.

Our Children’s Emergency Department is also based at the LRI. As part of a £43.3million development project, a new emergency floor (including Children’s ED) was opened in April 2017.The LRI is also the main base for our Maternity and Neonatal services.

Leicester General Hospital (LGH) is located approximately four miles from the LRI, on the north of the City, delivering a range of services for adults, including maternity and some neonatal services.

Glenfield (GH), is located approximately

three miles from the LRI and hosts the East Midlands Congenital Heart

Centre. There is a specialised Cardiac Unit

and a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) which has the capacity to deliver paediatric ECMO.

Leicester’s Hospitals is comprised of three hospitals located in the city of Leicester.

Children’s Hospital Project Following the fantastic news that East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre (EMCHC) will continue to be commissioned to provide Level 1 surgical and interventional services we can now look forward to the growth and development necessary to make our service the centre of choice for the patients in the East Midlands. We have worked hard to develop close relationships with the hospitals within our network to support and encourage referrals from their areas to us, and this partnership will continue to grow and develop over the next few years, with many

opportunities for training, development and collaboration. In order to meet the CHD standards for co-location of paediatric services we have an exciting plan to move from the Glenfield Hospital to our main Leicester Royal Infirmary site and create a new bespoke Children’s Hospital by July 2019 The project for this work is well underway and is a fantastic opportunity for the Congenital Heart Disease team to craft how they will work with their paediatric colleagues into the future.EMCHC is home to the largest ECMO centre in the UK and the only mobile ECMO service we work hand in hand with this extraordinary team and are renown for training and research in this area.

Joining now , you will be part of the team creating a centre of excellence within the East Midlands. We have positions on our Cardiac Surgical Children’s Ward and Paediatric Intensive Care Units. We have training and preceptorship programmes to support the transition of newly qualified Children’s Nurses and experienced Children’s Nurses alike to help you develop and learn new and existing skills and continue the excellent work our amazing teams already do.

Children’s Education TeamIt is important that Nurses continue to learn after registration. The Children’s Hospital has a fantastic support system of dedicated specialist education senior nurses who work with both newly qualified nurses and experienced nurses to enable on going professional development, further studies and clinical skills. We offer a 1:1 support system with a senior member of qualified staff to provide on-going support dedicated to making the transition from qualifying as a staff nurses as smooth as possible. For those staff who are new to Leicester’s Hospitals we will provide you with a ‘buddy’ to support you while you settle in.It is important to us that our band 5 staff complete a development programme

provided by the specialist education team. You will have the opportunity to complete the Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF) competencies in order to gain confidence and the necessary skills to be a successful band 5. The team have close links with DeMontfort University who provide nurse education for undergraduate and post graduate students.

We will help your

professionaldevelopment

We’re currently in the early planning stages to create a new Children’s Hospital! Our Chief Executive, John Adler says: “The Trust is committed to creating a single-site Children’s Hospital involving major investment in new and refurbished facilities. We will also be undertaking a significant fundraising campaign so we can create the very best environment for children and their families.”

Paediatric Intensive Care Unit Education team: This clinical area recognises the challenges of developing and maintaining the skills required for looking after our sickest children. There is a dedicated paediatric critical care education team providing structured education programmes and simulation training for newly qualified nurses and beyond.

Associate NursesUHL are piloting the Associate Nurse role from February 2017 and we are pleased to have been able to support four of our Health Care Assistants to participate in this initiative. The programme is supported by the Children’s Hospital Education Team, the Practice Learning team along with members of ward and specialist nursing teams.

Specialist NursesWe have a broad range of specialist nurse roles within the Leicester Children’s Hospital that includes diabetes, respiratory, pain, urology, endocrinology, HIV, metabolic and oncology and there are opportunities for progression within the teams. The specialist nurses work closely with the nursing and medical teams to provide seamless family centred care.

Transport Team

We have a dedicated clinical transport nurse who transfers children between the Leicester Royal Infirmary and the Glenfield Hospital site and further afield when patients are ready for transfer back to their local hospital. In addition, we now have a regional Paediatric Critical Care Retrieval team comprising experienced critical care Nurses who retrieve critically ill children from regional district hospitals and transfer them to our paediatric intensive care units in the East Midlands.

Quality Nursing CareWe strive to always deliver high standards of care. Knowing and understanding how it is to be a patient in the Children’s Hospital is important to us, using the Message to Matrons cards and the Patient Experience Questionnaires. We are also actively supported by two patient advisors.

Quality and Safety TeamOur teams are supported and work closely with our dedicated Quality and Safety Team. This collaborative working ensures that patient safety and quality of care is high on our agenda and, for example, has enabled us to tackle medication errors with a ‘no blame’ approach ensuring that they provide us with an opportunity for learning. Multidisciplinary Safety huddles take place across our wards which has made improvements to communication between all members of the team thereby further enhancing the quality of care our patients receive.

International Nurse RecruitmentAs part of our wider campaign to recruit nurses to UHL we have recruited a number of nurses from Spain, Portugal and the Republic of Ireland who have embraced the opportunities offered in Leicester. More recently we have begun recruiting nurses from India, Dubai and the Philippines to join our existing diverse teams in the Children’s Hospital.

Listening into Action

The Trust made the decision to start something that would radically change the way we do things around here by embarking upon a brilliant new venture called “Listening in to Action (LiA)”.

Nursing into Action (NiA) came from the original concept of LiA. The purpose to focus on improving the care and experiences of our patients and service users, making changes that staff want to see. We recognise that front line staff know what currently works well and what is getting in the way of them working well within our service or when carrying out their duties.

Engaging staff at ward and department level empowers change within their focus group enabling them to take ownership and to take forward their visions and creativities that they have for their patients and workplace.

Nursing into Action (NiA) focuses on three dimensions of change:

1) Quality and Safety indicators2) The patient experience3) Working together
