Apprenticeships offer a world of possibilities

By Susan Hinchey

31 May 2018 — 11:15am

Apprenticeships are great for anyone wanting to secure jobs in the future but it's those expert who train in trade fields that really have the world at their fingertips.

“Train in any mechanical instrumentation or electrical field and it will take you around the world,” says Rod Hannigan, a competency assurance specialist working for the Chevron Wheatstone Project on the liquid natural gas plant in north Western Australia.

Hannigan joined the army, age 16, and qualified as a mechanical fitter and turner. After a 12-year Defence Force career, fixing everything from machinery to machine guns,

Hannigan’s final posting involved overseeing and training others.

“I could see that that initial apprenticeship opened up career opportunities. It seemed a natural fit, when I left the army, to go on to teach,” he says.

Hannigan subsequently gained his Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. After lecturing at Curtin University for several years, he then saw opportunities further afield. Originally from NSW, Hannigan has worked with the Barrick Gold Corporation in the Dominican Republic, Persius Mining in Ghana, and Oil Search Ltd in Papua New Guinea as a mechanical maintenance trainer, setting up and overseeing skills improvement programs.

“CEO’s of these companies have local workers who know how to fix something, but there’s no underpinning knowledge or problem-solving protocols in place. They want the Australian method taken into their work sites to improve the skills and knowledge of their people,” he says.

Page 15: Career Hotspot Locksmitheduapp.s3.amazonaws.com/Careers_Corner_Issue_8_5b1... · Locksmith They can specialise in lock manipulation, key manufacture and identification, safe work

At the International Network on Innovative Apprenticeship conference in Washington DC last year Australia was named, alongside Germany and Switzerland, as having the best apprenticeships in the world.

“There are so many opportunities in construction now, everything from carpentry and electrical, to plumbing and mechanics. Computers are changing how we do things, but robotics will never replace everything a tradie does,” Hannigan says.

In last year's federal budget, the Australian Government announced it was allocating $1.5 billion to the Skilling Australians Fund, an initiative prioritising apprenticeship participation. With matched funding from states and territories, this will support up to 300,000 apprenticeships, traineeships, pre-apprenticeships and higher apprenticeships.

“The competency-style of testing in apprenticeships now allows for a lot more free-thinking and problem-solving,” says Hannigan. “Some of the best apprentices I’ve ever had were the kids who spent their entire weekend lying under a car. They weren’t chalkboard kids.”

Brett Beuzeville was one of those kids. Now, Master Builder and owner of StepUP Constructions, Beuzeville acknowledges he was good at school but couldn’t see himself with a desk job.

“I liked the idea of working outside, being hands-on, and learning new skills. I knew I learnt visually – show me how to do something and I learn real fast – and I liked the idea of earning money straight away,” says Beuzeville.

“As a builder’s apprentice, I used to watch my boss multi-task; teaching apprentices, taking phone calls, and liaising with home owners and architects. I never thought I would be able to do all those things, but the apprenticeship structure helps you learn in increments. Things like time-management and customer service, you’re learning without realising.”

Agencies such as MEGT and skillinvest now take the hassle out of the apprenticeship process, providing a full recruitment service, finding the right person for the right job.

“If one trade hasn’t worked out for you, it is possible to switch to another. I currently have two apprentices working for me. Out of 30 students from their school who left in Year 10, 25 have secured apprenticeships.”
